86. The Imperial Japanese Navy’s A6M2-K Zero Trainer Or Rei-Sen Ren-Sen
Rudder, Early, with external trim tab which ran during the last year of Nakajima’sA6M2 production and H of Zero Japan's Legendary Fighter by Robert C. Mikesh
http://members.aol.com/reishikisenguy/zerotrnr.htm
By Rob Graham For years, publications have shown photos of the A6M2-K Zero Trainer, which has always been said to be an A6M2 that was modified by adding a rear seat and cockpit. A story once put forth mentioned the A6M2-K was constructed using obsolete and / or reconditioned parts. Close inspection reveals the A6M2-K was not likely based on an A6M2 at all, and few photographs show evidence of reconditioned or obsolete parts. In the photo collections, it is apparent upon close inspection that the A6M2-K was very likely an aircraft that was built using A6M3 model 22 or A6M5 model 52 (later airframes) parts with various modifications to adapt the Sakae12 engine. This document bears the ever-mounting evidence for this case. Shortly before WWII, the Imperial Japanese navy was phasing out the veteran Type 96 Carrier Fighter (Kyu Roku Kan Sen, or "Claude"). This aircraft was the world's first all-metal monoplane carrier fighter and was designated the A5M. Many of these were being converted for the training role at Hitachi [and Sasebo?]. New Japanese naval fighter pilots were honing their dogfighting skills in the modified two-seat aircraft. The Japanese navy fighter pilots were "cutting their teeth" in a then-great aircraft to become part of an elite group of fighter pilots who would fly the A6M Type Zero Carrier Fighter (Rei Sen, or "Zeke"). When World War II broke out, Zero pilots were truly in a league of their own, quite a few of them having become seasoned veterans in China. However, as the war raged on, losses of both man and machine became dearer. The Japanese navy needed to train pilots to fly the newer Zeros. In January of 1943, the Japanese navy's 21

Tautringer (Newsletter from Tautra) November 2000 Dear all, Summer on Tautra brought several momentous occasions that we want to share with you. The first, since our last letter, was the St. Olav's fair, where our Support Group designed and staffed a "Tautra Mariakloster" boutique. This was so popular that they sold ten times the amount of soap and candles than we had hoped, and won the prize for the best stall in the market. Many people learned about our life that week, as well as about our products. On St. Bernard’s day, August 20, we had Mass in the ruins with about 100 friends and members of the Support Group. We look forward to the day we will be able to provide a meal for all of them after Mass in our new monastery! That day is still at least two years away, but it is coming. We want to bring you up to date on recent developments. Since the beginning of this year we have been discussing our new monastery both among ourselves and with a number of architects who could teach us about building. For the past two months we have been interviewing several architects who were highly recommended, and finally were able to choose the one we wanted for this special project. Mother Gail was with us for this decision, and was able to share her valuable experiences of Iowa's past and present building projects. Needless to say, we also benefitted in many other ways from her visit, and enjoyed her presence among us. Now we are meeting with our architect to give him the specific, concrete information he needs, as well as a feel for our way of life, and the spirit that the monastery needs to express. Many have told us that it will take a year just for the plans, and we count on your prayers that we make good choices. While we do not expect to be able to build the whole monastery at once, we do hope to build the church and the most needed rooms in the first phase, and have a finished plan for the whole. As great as is our need for funds, we count on you most of all for your prayers, that all will be as God wills, and for His glory. We cannot thank you enough for all the many ways you have supported us as we work together to establish Cistercian life again in our diocese of Trondheim.

Throughout Con's childhood, daydreaming was a habit he worked hard to overcome as everyone, including himself, considered it a flaw. Other weaknesses, equally shameful in this era, were his uneasiness with the sight of blood and of suffering in animals. Although he tried hard to conceal it, he never really overcame these perceived problems. As a boy, he was "shy and diffident, small and weakly for his age, lethargic, backward, and above all, dreamy" as one of his biographers wrote. On the other hand, he had a happy childhood as the first five children were born within a nine year period providing plenty of playmates. Although subject to occasional fits of temper, Con's father, John, was considered an easygoing father with plenty of patience. Con's mother, Hannah, was loved and worshipped by all the Scott children; to Con she was always "the dear Mother". Not much is known about Hannah but one thing is certain: she had strong religious principles and never questioned the teachings of the Church of England. "My own dearest Mother," wrote Con on his departure from New Zealand on his last journey in 1910, "I quite understand and anticipated your anxiety concerning our spiritual welfare. I read the Church service every Sunday on our voyage to Melbourne and I propose to do the same with equal regularity throughout the voyage. You need not have any anxiety on this point".

Robert S. Johnson
Follow Ups Post Followup FAQ Posted by Dan (24.205.234.246) on January 11, 2002 at 01:01:11: Robert S. Johnson was indeed a P-47 pilot. Perhaps the greatest of them all. Here is a short recount of his career.
He flew for the 56th group under Hub Zemke. Ironically many of the pilots of the 56th thought he would be among the first killed.
Johnson gave his fellow pilots prediction a real good try at reality. He was shot up on a mission following his 1st victory in a manner that has become a byword for the ruggedness of the Thunderbolt. Literally hundreds of 20mm cannon and 8mm bullet holes were put in his aircraft.
In October 1943 Johnson scored his fifth victory. Remarkably modern research indicates the aircraft (a FW-190) was being piloted by Hans Phillip an ace from the Eastern front with some 205 to 208 kills (German records I have seen have not definite). Johnson had been separated from his wingman and made a bold act on four FW-190's he saw attacking a B-17 below him. One of Phillip's wingmen shot Johnson's rudder cable through but Johnson sucessfully rejoined other P-47s and escaped. Hans Phillip was killed in the attack.
Johnson finished the war credited with 27 victories by the US Army Air Force. Originally he was credited with 28 but some conflict with credit given him for a victory scored by another Johnson lowered it to 27. This left his fellow 56th group pilot Gabreski as the American ace of aces in the European theater. However the jury seems to be out on that one. In a rare case of under claming by a fighter pilotGerman records indicate Johnson shot down 32.

As an independent car owner since 1994, Rudd failed to win a Winston Cup race for the first time since 1982. With his long time sponsorship with Tide coming to an end, it was a world of uncertainty for Rudd. But what a difference a year can make. Rudd was asked by Robert Yates to drive the #28 Texaco Ford Taurus for the 2000 season. Joining forces with teammate Dale Jarrett, Rudd was out to prove that he was still at the top of his game. Rudd in his Yates-powered Taurus has been revitalized this year with 8 top-ten finishes in his last 9 races, and five top-five finishes in his last 6 races.

Hamble Winter Series Race Day 7 – Sunday, 25 th November 2001 A Classic Day’s Racing. The first fresh Southwesterly breeze of the series produced an interesting and eventful day in the Kayospruce sponsored 7 th Sunday of racing. There was 15 knots of wind at the start of the day and this gradually built to about 22-25 knots by the end of racing. The recent clement weather encouraged some crewmembers to test the temperature of the water, not as warm as first thought appears to have been general opinion. First casualty of the day was David Aisher’s “Yeoman of Hamble” in the IRM class. He was forced to retire from the first race after a crewman fell across the boat and damaged the pushpit. This incident was more serious but less spectacular than “Too Steamy’s” top to tail splitting of her spinnaker on the last run of the first race. Victory went to another Farr 40, David Murrin’s “2XL”. In the afternoon Nick Hartshorn won in his Ker 11.3 “Gringo”. The Bowsprit class were given a triangular course that allowed two good reaching legs. Mike Wallis’s J-105 “Juneau” was fastest both on the water and on handicap. Nigel Brook’s 3 rd place keeps him just ahead of the pack going into the final race. Another bowsprit boat that had a good race was the J-145 of Robert Davies. They took line honours in IRC 1 but slipped to 9
