Martin, TN
The mission of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church is to provide for the worship and religious education of the Catholic people of Weakley County and the Catholic students at the University of Tennessee at Martin; to foster a deep sense of worth, belonging, and love within the Catholic community; to promote an understanding of the Catholic faith among members of other faiths; to support and encourage growth in Christian service on a larger than parish basis. The Church was established in 1966 as a mission extension of Immaculate Conception Parish in Union City, Tennessee. In 1982 St. Jude the Apostle was established canonically as a parish in the diocese of Memphis. The family atmosphere which was initiated during its beginnings has prevailed through the present. Because of the diversity of our involvement in the local civic community, our more than 200 parishioners are able to extend this spirit of friendliness and hospitality to every aspect of contemporary life. Regular worship services, religious education, and social outreach constitute the major activities of the parish. The Mass times at St. Jude are

The Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle
St. Petersburg, Florida Web Site: www.cathedralofstjude.org Mass Times and Cathedral Location Sometimes cathedrals are made, not born. What is now the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle was founded in 1950 as St. Jude the Apostle Church, a parish of the Diocese of St. Augustine. When the Diocese of St. Petersburg was formed in 1968, founding Bishop Charles B. McLaughlin decided that the 1,500-seat capacity and location of St. Jude Church in St. Petersburg made it a good "mother church" for the diocese. On June 17, 1950 Bishop McLaughlin was installed as the first bishop of St. Petersburg in a liturgy also establishing the Canonical Erection of the new diocese and St. Jude the Apostle Church as its cathedral. Bishop W. Thomas Larkin was installed there as the diocese's second bishop in 1979. Bishop John C. Favalora was installed as its third bishop in 1989, and Monsignor Robert N. Lynch was ordained as bishop and installed as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg Diocese on Jan. 26, 1996.

Prayer to St. Jude Kathleen Norris O, great Saint Jude
Whose traitor-sounding name
By man's perceptions crude
Confused is with the obloquy and blame
Of him who to our gain and his disaster
Betrayed so kind a Master;
We, seeing more clear, concede thee what was thine;
The glory of a place beside that board
Whereon, awaiting their predestined hour
Of bowing to all-Good, all-Love, all-Power,
Lay bread and wine Before that Host adored Through whom our hope and our salvation came; Thy kinsman, and our Lord. O, thou, the sad day done, Taking the homeward road To thine obscure abode In the long shadows of the setting sun, To meet the frightened crowd Sobbing aloud, With thine Aunt Mary silent in their midst, Leaning upon The faithful arm of John; Saint Jude, who didst Join them in unbelief And utter agony of grief, And in a voice of pain and terror cried: "Saw'st thouand thou Saws't thou indeed my Cousin crucified?" O, by the memory of that hour of birth Wherein Heaven's door opened to us of earth, Befriendbefriend us now!

Dominican Nuns of the Monastery of St. Jude
History The Dominican Monastery of St. Jude was established August 17, 1944 as the first interracial Monastery of contemplative nuns in the United States. While English is the language of the community, the nuns invite women of all races and nationalities to join them. At the invitation of Archbishop Thomas J. Toolen and with the assistance of Father Harold Purcell, Mother Mary Dominic, O.P. and Mother Mary of the Child Jesus, O.P. came from the Monastery in Catonsville, MD to begin the work of cloistered, contemplative life here. Mission Among the elements that constitute our Dominican life are common life, the celebration of the liturgy and private prayer, the observance of the vows and the study of sacred truth. To fulfill these faithfully, we are helped by enclosure, silence, the habit, work, and penitential practices. The nuns seek God by observing the norms of the purely contemplative life, by maintaining their withdrawal from the world by enclosure and silence, studying the truth, eagerly searching the Scriptures with an ardent heart, praying intently, willingly practicing penance, pursuing communion through their manner of government, in purity of conscience and the joy of sisterly concord, "in freedom of spirit." It is God who now makes them dwell together in unity and on the last day will gather into the Holy City a people acquired as His own. In the midst of the Church their growth in charity is mysteriously fruitful for the growth of the people of God. By their hidden life they proclaim prophetically that in Christ alone is true happiness to be found, here by grace and afterwards in glory.

The City of St.Jude
Founded during the mid-1930s by Catholic priest Father Harold Purcell when segregation was the norm in the Southeast, the City of St.Jude Hospital pioneered nondiscriminatory health, education, and social services.
In the 1950s, St.Jude's Church hosted an integrated prayer group, and in 1965, Martin Luther King,Jr., and 2,000 participants of the Selma-to-Montgomery March found shelter there. The night before the final march to the Capitol, City of St.Jude offered its 36 acres to the marchers, who slept on the athletic field and held a "Stars of Freedom Rally" featuring such celebrities as Odetta, Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger, Leonard Bernstein, and Joan Baez.
St.Jude's Catholic Hospital, which opened in 1951 as the first integrated hospital in the Southeast, offered help again when tragedy struck at the end of the march. Hospital staff tried to save the life of Viola Liuzzo, the Detroit homemaker who was fatally shot by Klansmen while driving marchers back to Selma.
The hospital closed in 1985. In March 1990, City of St.Jude was the site of the 25th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery March. Former Governor George Wallace appeared in the doorway of the St.Jude Educational Institute as he had done years before at the University of Alabama, this time not to prevent students from entering the building but to greet civil rights supporters.

97. St. Jude
St. Jude, ApoStle. From Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints.
http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/STJUDE.htm
ST JUDE, APOSTLE [See Tillemont, t. i.; Jos. Assemani, ad 19 Junij, t. vi. p. 453; Falconius, ib. p. 105; Calmet, t. ix.] The apostle St. Jude is distinguished from the Iscariot by the surname of Thaddaus , which signifies in Syriac praising or confession (being of the same import with the Hebrew word Judas), also by that of Lebbaeus, which is given him in the Greek text of St. Matthew. St. Jude was brother to St. James the Less, as he styles himself in his epistle; likewise of St. Simeon of Jerusalem, and of one Joses, who are styled the brethren of our Lord, and were sons of Cleophas and Mary, sister to the Blessed Virgin. This apostle's kindred and relation to our Saviour exalted him not so much in his Master's eyes as his contempt of the world the ardour of his holy zeal and love, and his sufferings for his sake. It is not known when and by what means he became a disciple of Christ, nothing having been said of him in the gospels before we find him enumerated in the catalogue of the apostles. After the last supper, when Christ promised to manifest himself to every one who should love him, St. Jude asked him why he did not manifest himself to the world? By which question he seems to have expressed his expectation of a secular kingdom of the Messias. Christ by his answer satisfied him that the world is unqualified for divine manifestations, being a stranger and an enemy to what must fit souls for a fellowship with heaven; but that he would honour those who truly love him with his familiar converse, and would admit them to intimate communications of grace and favour.
