It is the former home of naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, one of Indiana's most widely read authors and one of the world's first and best nature photographers. I n her lifetime (1863-1924) Porter authored novels, nature works, poetry and essays, as well as numerous magazine articles. With an estimated following of 50 million readers, her works have been translated into several foreign languages. Eight of her novels have been produced in motion pictures. The vast, undeveloped forests and swamp lands of Limberlost North, as well as Porter's formal gardens, provided a rich source of material for her nature studies, writings and photography. The two-story cabin, designed by Mrs. Porter, has an exterior of Wisconsin cedar logs. Paneling throughout the first floor is of local wild cherry. There are three extraordinary fireplaces on the first floor: one of polished English brick, one of stone and Indian artifacts and one of puddin' stone. Many of Porter's furnishings and personal memorabilia, including Mrs. Porter's personal Library, are preserved at the home.

She loved to observe birds and all manner of living things. This passion and a desire to support herself led to a career writing articles, which she illustrated with her own photographs. Her fiction, an immediate hit with national magazines, evolved into popular novels and poetry. Many of the books were based on nature themes and strong characters, such as in The Girl of the Limberlost . She became Indiana's most popular writer with a claimed 50 million readers, and eight of her books were made into movies. Her influence caused Americans to rethink the country's headlong rush into resource depletion and led the way for national conservation initiatives. In 1912, she purchased land on Sylvan Lake in northeast Indiana to build a second log home. Set in Rainbow Bottom along the Wabash River, At the Foot of the Rainbow tells of the lives of a dissipated Irishman, Jimmy Malone, his long-suffering wife Mary, and Jimmy's boyhood friend and lifelong companion, Dannie Macnoun. Through Jimmy's deceitfulness, Mary is lost to Dannie for many unhappy years. When Dannie wins the fishing contest for the elusive Black Bass, matters come to a head. He sets the Black Bass free and then love triumphs over lies and adversity as Dannie and Mary are finally brought together. This novel is supplimented with a brief account by the author of her early life and the beginning of her writing career. Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was born on a farm in Wabash County, Indiana. Later, she lived in a cabin adjoining the Limberlost swamp, immortalized in her best-selling A Girl of the Limberlost (Library of Indiana Classics). In 1923 she moved to California for her health. They complain about the condition of their roads, but spend millions on chemicals so that no cattail or wildflower will survive at the highway's edge. Hoosiers think that everything and everyone has a price. They have commodified both the land and themselves. In sum, they are the most devout materialists you will find anywhere. But not all of them. This page is dedicated to Indiana and to the many Hoosiers who strive tirelessly to defend the Indiana land, from the glacial moraine in the north to the limestone hills in the south. Mrs. Porter died Dec. 6, 1924 in Hollywood, California in an automobile accident with a street car. Her daughter died in 1977. The women’s bodies had been buried in Bel Air, California and will be re-buried in a private, family ceremony. The state historic site honors Mrs. Porter (1863-1924) as one of Indiana’s most recognized authors and foremost nature photographers. In her lifetime, she wrote 12 novels including Freckles, Girl of the Limberlost and Laddie. Eight of her novels became motion pictures. Her Geneva, Indiana home is also maintained as a state historic site. Her husband Charles Dorwin Porter is buried in Decatur. Mrs. Porter had moved to Hollywood to oversee the production of her novels into movies. A final step in carrying out Gene Stratton-Porter’s request for a Rome City final resting place was approved by the Department of Natural Resources’ governing commission.
