Gene Stratton Porter, 1863–1924. One of 12 children, Gene Stratton Portergrew up on a farm in Indiana, learning a life long love of the outdoors.

Romantic Fiction
Mrs. Southworth was a prolific and successful author, wildly popular with her audience. So popular was she that various other authors tried to capitalize on her fame, writing under variants of her name, with different initials. Her publisher began to warn the reading public not to be taken in by these imposters, but to look only for those books with the famous initials E.D.E.N. Born in 1819, in Washington, D.C., she taught school there for a short time before marrying. Her husband deserted her, leaving her with two young children, and she returned to teaching to support them. Soon, though, she turned to writing, submitting short stories to magazines and newspapers. Her first novel - and many subsequent ones - appeared first in serial form, in magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post. She produced about three novels a year during her working life. Many of her novels were translated into foreign languages; many were adapted for the stage; and her characters influenced fashion. Many of her novels were still in print in the 1930s, three decades after her death.
