The Histories Book Three A World Convulsed (36-48) 36. A few days after Caecina's departure been appointed without the passing of a formal act of abrogation. The shortness of the term was not in itself a novelty, as Caninius Rebilus had been consul for one day magistrate in the dictatorship of Julius Caesar when rewards for services in the civil war were being hurriedly distributed. 38. It was at this period that Junius Blaesus died. The news caused a great stir. The account which has come down to us is the following. Vitellius was lying seriously ill in the Servilian Park There was no point in being afraid of Vespasian: from him they were shielded by the many legions of the garrison of Germany, by many loyal and stout-hearted provinces, and by vast areas of land and sea. It was in the capital and his own intimate circle that the emperor must guard against a traitor who boasted that he was descended from the Junii and Antonii, and who by affability and free spending sought to gain publicity among the troops as member of a ruling family. He was the centre of public attention, while Vitellius, heedless of friends and enemies alike, nursed a rival who contemplated the emperor's sufferings from the convenient distance of a banqueting table. Such untimely festivity should be repaid by a night of misery and death, in which he would learn to his cost that Vitellius was still alive and still emperor, and in the event of death had a son to succeed him.

AD 55 - 117 THE little that is known about the life of Tacitus is provided by allusions in his own writings and the letters addressed to him by his intimate friend, Pliny the Younger. When Tacitus began his " Histories ", somewhere about his forty-fifth year, he related his life to the empire that was to be the burden of his narrative: "I myself knew nothing of Galba, of Otho, or of Vitellius, either from benefits or from injuries. I Could not deny that my elevation was begun by Vespasian, augmented by Titus, and still further advanced by Domitian.... I have reserved as an employment for my old age, should my life be long enough, a subject at once more fruitful and less anxious in the reign of the Divine Nerva and the empire of Trajan, enjoying the rare happiness of times, when we may think what we please, and express what we think." The influential part of Tacitus' education took place during the early part of Vespasian's reign. It is possible that, like his friend, Pliny, he was trained in rhetoric by Quintillian, for whom Vespasian had founded the first public chair of eloquence at Rome. Tacitus himself records how zealous he was for achievement and how diligently he pursued and studied the leading orators. It is not known on what occasion he began his own political career, but he won renown quickly. Pliny, only a few years his junior, recalls in a famous letter that in his youth Tacitus seemed of all the eminent men then active the most worthy of imitation.

Publius Cornelius Tacitus
You can accomplish by kindness what you cannot by force. They make a desert and call it peace. The principle office of history I take to be this: to prevent virtuous actions from being forgotten, and that evil words and deeds should fear an infamous reputation with posterity. The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws. Reason and calm judgment: the qualities especially belonging to a leader. In valor there is hope. In seasons of tumult and discord bad men have the most power; mental and moral excellence require peace and quietness. If we must fall, we should boldly meet the danger. Forethought and prudence are the proper qualities of a leader. Even the bravest men are frightened by sudden terrors. As soon as Sallustius Crispus who shared the secret (he had, in fact, sent the written order to the tribune) knew this, fearing that the charge would be shifted on himself, and that his peril would be the same whether he uttered fiction or truth, he advised Livia not to divulge the secrets of her house or the counsels of friends, or any services performed by the soldiers, nor to let Tiberius weaken the strength of imperial power by referring everything to the Senate, for "the condition," he said, "of holding empire is that an account cannot be balanced unless it be rendered to one person."
On the first day of the Senate he allowed nothing to be discussed but the funeral of Augustus, whose will, which was brought in by the Vestal Virgins, named as his heirs Tiberius and Livia. The latter was to be admitted into the Julian family with the name of Augusta; next in expectation were the grand and great-grandchildren. In the third place, he had named the chief men of the State, most of whom he hated, simply out of ostentation and to win credit with posterity. His legacies were not beyond the scale of a private citizen, except a bequest of forty-three million five hundred thousand sesterces "to the people and populace of Rome," of one thousand to every praetorian soldier, and of three hundred to every man in the legionary cohorts composed of Roman citizens.

A.D. 16-19
IN the consulship of Sisenna Statilius Taurus and Lucius Libo there was a commotion in the kingdoms and Roman provinces of the East. It had its origin among the Parthians, who disdained as a foreigner a king whom they had sought and received from Rome, though he was of the family of the Arsacids. This was Vonones, who had been given as an hostage to Augustus by Phraates. For although he had driven before him armies and generals from Rome, Phraates had shown to Augustus every token of reverence and had sent him some of his children, to cement the friendship, not so much from dread of us as from distrust of the loyalty of his countrymen.
After the death of Phraates and the succeeding kings in the bloodshed of civil wars, there came to Rome envoys from the chief men of Parthia, in quest of Vonones, his eldest son. Caesar thought this a great honour to himself, and loaded Vonones with wealth. The barbarians, too, welcomed him with rejoicing, as is usual with new rulers. Soon they felt shame at Parthians having become degenerate, at their having sought a king from another world, one too infected with the training of the enemy, at the throne of the Arsacids now being possessed and given away among the provinces of Rome. "Where," they asked, "was the glory of the men who slew Crassus, who drove out Antonius, if Caesar's drudge, after an endurance of so many years' slavery, were to rule over Parthians."
