The son of Thomas Anthony Trollope, a lawyer, and of Frances Trollope, a prolific writer herself, Anthony Trollope was born in London in 1815. As a child, Trollope was not particularly happy. A major factor in this was his father insistence upon sending him and his two brothers - Thomas Adolphus and Henry - to public school, despite the fact that he lacked sufficient finances to support them properly. They were the brunt of much teasing on account of their poverty. Firstly, Trollope attended Harrow School, later transferring to Winchester. However, he showed little academic promise during his time at either and, unlike his two brothers who continued their studies at Oxford and Cambridge, he was unable to obtain the scholarships he would have needed to support himself through university. Shortly after leaving school Trollope moved to Brussels to teach, but he remained there only a short while as with his father's help he was able to obtain a position as a junior clerk at the Post Office in London, a job which gave him little satisfaction. However, he was given the chance to take a job with the Post Office in Ireland as an administrator, a post in which he exhibited considerable ability. At this point in his life, Trollope experienced for the first time not only success in his work, but also began his literary career.

Trollope, Anthony English novelist, who presented a sharply observed picture of the upper layers of Victorian society in his two monumental series of chronicle novels, the Barchester series and the Palliser series. Trollope is also famed for The Way We Live Now (1875), a satirical novel commenting on the decline of ethical values. His travel books include The West Indies and the Spanish Main (1859), North America (1862), Australia and New Zealand (1873), and South Africa (1878). Trollope's autobiography was published posthumously in 1883.

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) Anthony Trollope Anthony Trollope wrote forty-seven novels and five volumes of short stories as well as travel books, biographies and collections of sketches. The Barsetshire series and the six Palliser or `political' books were the first novel-sequences to be written in English. His works offer an unsurpassed portrait of the professional and landed classes of Victorian England. In his Autobiography (published posthumously in 1883) Trollope describes the self-discipline that enabled his prolific output: he would produce a given number of words per hour in the early morning, before work; he always wrote while travelling by rail or sea and as soon as he finished one novel, he began another. His efforts resulted in him becoming one of England's most successful and popular writers.

In seinen beiden umfangreichen Romanchroniken, der Barchester-Reihe und der Palliser-Reihe, vermittelt er ein detailliertes Bild der Oberschicht der viktorianischen Gesellschaft. Trollope stammte aus einer Londoner Juristen- und Literatenfamilie. Von 1834 bis 1867 war er als Postbeamter tätig und gründete nach seinem Ausscheiden das St. Paul’s Magazine, das er bis 1870 herausgab. Trollopes erste Buchpublikation war der Roman The Macdermots of Ballycloran (1847). Er verfasste insgesamt 59 Werke, neben Romanen und Erzählungen auch Reisebücher, in denen er Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse seiner häufigen Reisen (u. a. nach Australien, Neuseeland und Südafrika) niederlegte, und lieferte regelmäßig Beiträge für bedeutende Zeitschriften. Er starb am 6. Dezember 1882 in London. Am beliebtesten bei der zeitgenössischen Leserschaft waren Trollopes bekannteste Chronikromane, wie die so genannten Chroniken von Barsetshire (The Warden, 1855; Barchester Towers, 1857; Doctor Thorne, 1858; Framley Parsonage, 1861; The Small House at Allington, 1864; und The Last Chronicle of Barset, 1867). Schauplatz ist Barsetshire, eine malerische, vom Autor erfundene Landschaft. He is best known for his depictions of upper-class English life and satires of the political and religious establishment. Anthony Trollope was born in London. His father, a fellow of New College, Oxford, failed both as a lawyer and as a farmer. The family's poverty embarrased Trollope during his education at the prestigious schools of Harrow and Winchester, where sometimes his parents could not afford to pay their son's school fees. After financial troubles the family moved to Belgium, but returned to England when Anthony's father died. His mother, Frances Trollope (1780-1863), took her three youngest children to America to assist in the founding of a utopian community in New Harmony, Indiana. The venture failed and she travelled for fifteen months in America. In 1832, back in England, she published Domestic Manners of the Americans , which gained success, and she was able to support her family through her writing.

Anthony Trollope Like physician Anton Chekhov, customs inspector Herman Melville, and insurance man Wallace Stevens, English novelist Anthony Trollope belonged to that proud society of writers who worked a double shift. While other men were content to have one profession, Trollope pursued two with gusto: He undertook a distinguished if unconventional career in the British General Post Office (capped by his invention of Britain's distinctive red pillar mailbox), at the same time penning some of the most popular social novels of his day and in no small quantity. Anthony Trollope was the fourth son of Thomas Anthony and Frances (Milton) Trollope. During his youth, he was shuttled among several public schools, where the ill-clad and awkward boy was often the subject of taunts and jeers from well-off schoolmates.
