Anthony Trollope
English Novelist
Trollope enjoyed the earlier Dickens novels specifically Pickwick, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, and The Old Curiosity Shop and decidedly did not care for Little Dorrit and most of those that followed. As to individual characters, he loved the "impossible dear old duller," Mr. Pickwick, and greatly admired Inspector Bucket in spite of his lack of enthusiasm for Bleak House and its real heroine, Esther Summerson. As a dedicated and effective civil servant, however, Trollope deeply and permanently resented Dickens's attacks on the British Civil Service via the "Circumlocution Office" in Little Dorrit. References to Dickens, direct or indirect, as "Mr. Popular Sentiment" and similar labels occur frequently in both Trollope's novels and his correspondences. Despite this literary animosity, Trollope's personal relationship with Dickens seems to have been at least civil, for the most part, if not friendly. (Oddly, he was tenuously connected with Dickens; his brother, Tom Trollope, married the sister of Ellen Ternan. This did nothing to improve the relationship, although Tom was a close friend and great admirer of Dickens.) Anthony Trollope wrote a lengthy obituary when Dickens died, which, as Dickens scholar Michael Slater has observed, indicated his "disapproval of Dickens's art" while paying fitting respect to him as a man and simultaneously rejecting his political outlook. In a letter written after the appearance of Forster's biography he describes Dickens as "a powerful clever, humorous, and in many respects, wise man," but "very ignorant and thick-skinned...not a hero at all."

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) authored some 50 novels. I think it may be laid down as a golden rule in literature that there should be no intercourse at all between an author and his critic. The critic, as critic, should not know his author, nor the author, as author, his critic. As censure should beget no anger, so should praise beget no gratitude. The young author should feel that criticisms fall upon him as dew or hail from heaven, —which as coming from heaven man accepts as fate. Praise let the author try to obtain by wholesome effort; censure let him avoid, if possible, by care and industry. But when they come let him take them as coming from some source which he cannot influence and with which he should not meddle. As an author I have paid careful attention to the reviews which have been written on my own work, and I think that now I well know where I may look for a little instruction, where I may expect only greasy adulation, where I shall be cut into mincemeat for the delight of those who love sharp invective, and where I shall find an equal mixture of praise and censure, so adjusted, without much judgement, as to exhibit the impartiality of the newspaper and its staff. Among it all there is much chaff which I have learned to throw to the winds with equal disregard whether it praises or blames, —but I have also found some corn on which I have fed and nourished myself, and for which I have been thankful.

Dickens was no doubt better at concocting picaresque incident and vivid if cockamamie character. But Trollope is by far the superior storyteller. He was a bit of a late bloomer. He started his career as a junior clerk in the General Post Office of London and spent seven penurious years there, cribbed, cabined and confined, before being promoted to the more remunerative job of deputy postal surveyor in Ireland. From then on his official duties would permit him to travel widely, providing a host of background material for his novels. The first of these, The Macdermots of Ballycloran (1847) and The Kellys and the O'Kellys (1848), were set in Ireland and had political themes. On the heels of this apprenticeship he published several major novels, including

Trollope was born in London, April 24, 1815, the son of a barrister and the novelist and travel writer Frances Trollope . His schooling at Harrow and Winchester was interrupted by his father's indebtedness, which necessitated family sojourns in Belgium and the United States. Trollope entered the general post office in London as a clerk in 1834. In 1841 he transferred to Ireland, working there as a postal surveyor. In this capacity he traveled extensively throughout Ireland and to distant parts of the world. Retiring in 1867, he helped found St. Paul's Magazine, editing it until 1870. He continued to travel, visiting Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Trollope's first book was the novel The Macdermots of Ballycloran (1847). His 59 other works, the bulk of which are also novels, include travel books and volumes of short stories. In addition, he frequently contributed to the major periodicals of his day. He died on December 6, 1882, in London.

Oxford Reader's Companion to Trollope Edited by R. C. TERRY An unparalleled guide to one of Victorian England's most popular and influential novelists The author of forty-seven novels, plus travel books, biographies, essays, and critical works, Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was the most prolific of the great Victorian writers. Now The Oxford Reader's Companion to Trollope brings together thirty-six leading scholars who provide an accessible, authoritative, and wide-ranging reference work on this important literary figure. Here, in more than 500 A-Z entries, readers will find a wealth of information on Trollope's life, his works, and the historical and social context in which he lived. Trollope's writing career spanned almost half a century and his circle of friends reads like a who's who of Victorian Englandand it's all captured here. The contributors offer illuminating essays on Trollope's major worksincluding the famed Barsetshire Novels and Paliser Novels as well as on the many lesser known but no less accomplished books. The volume also examines Trollope's personal life, offering fresh information on such well documented aspects as his work at the Post Office and his famous circle of friends. Moreover, the contributors provide the most recent findings on aspects of Trollope's career only recently addressed by scholars: his work as a biographer and journalist, the importance of his extensive travels abroad, and the astonishing reappraisal of his work over the last few decades. And the
