Module #2 Ira Aldridge Readings Black Immigrants/ Black Visitors to Russia Russia and the Slavery Question Assignments RUS 493 "African-American Literary Ties to Russian Intellectual Thought" URL: syllabus.htm "Black Immigrants/ Black Visitors to Russia" The practice of bringing blacks to work as servants began to wane as the 19 th century progressed. This was probably influenced by Russia’s early opposition to the African slave trade and by changes in attitude that came with the emancipation of Russia’s serfs in the 1860s . As this practice waned, blacks continued to come to Russia after the middle of the 19 th c. to improve their lot. In some cases they made a start as servants, while there are also reported cases of Russians who brought Africans back to Russia with them and later adopted them. For the most part, black immigrants to Russia came from the Americas. These immigrants worked not only in the major cities, but in more remote areas as well. While information on this immigration pattern is sketchy, two examples show patterns common to this group finding success in the entertainment industry and in professional athletics: George Thomas , an American black, moved to St. Petersburg in 1890. He later adopted the Russian name Fyodor. He was initially employed as a valet, but managed to amass a small fortune by engaging in various amusement enterprises throughout Russia. By the time of the First World War, he owned a large amusement complex in Moscow called the Aquarium. When the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, Thomas fled to Constantinople because his wealth made him a target for the new regime.

Civil War Studies Feature Index Book Review Everyday Life During the Civil War , by Michael J. Varhola The Smithsonian Associates Civil War E-Mail Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 8 Although the book is subtitled, "A Guide for Writers, Students and Historians," it is no ordinary reference book. It is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the minutiae of American life during the Civil War. The book begins with the basicsthe status of each state in and out of the Union, as well as the territories. Varhola recounts each area's history, its population and ethnic make-up at the time, its educational facilities, and its role during the Civil War. Among the fact-filled chapters is one on wages and currency. For instance, government clerks earned $16 per week; teachers $2 per student per month; and, Union nurses $12 per month. Government clerks have seen quite a few raises since then, but some would argue that teachers and nurses haven't. What could that money buy? In the midst of the war, shortages notwithstanding, the better dressed city lady would have to spend the following: Boots at $50; bonnet at a minimum of $25; merino dress at $150; cotton stockings at $6; all this and more if we include the many petticoats, the requisite camisole and chemise, fan, shawl, usually a parasol, and an overcoat or cape. (You'll even find out what a chemise is). Each major clothing item, for men or women, cost many times a soldier's pay of $1 to $13 per month.

Yes, he says after a few seconds, the musical "Thunder Knocking on the Door" finds a spot in a new national focus in drama: black theater. For many, the answer would have been issued quickly, but Sims doesn't look for simple answers. Creating roles for African-Americans c such as found in the first play he is directing for Theatre VCU isn't enough: Black theater is about experiences derived or created from black culture, Sims continues. Building on common experiences and communities, black theater also offers opportunities for directors, playwrights, technicians, students and audience members. Last summer, Sims joined the Theatre VCU faculty, bringing a rich knowledge in black theater history coupled with a master actor and director's craftsmanship. His appointment complements a Theatre VCU commitment to offer drama that is both enlightening and entertaining. "I'm here as an advocate for students beyond that primary scope, students who are coming to be involved in theater as African-Americans," Sims said. "They need someone to identify with and who understands their unique experiences and represents their views."
