PURDUE UNIVERSITY NEWS RELEASE

Posted: February 7, 2002
Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, is leading a team of researchers, including engineers at Purdue University, to design a new class of spacecraft that would serve as orbiting hotels perpetually cruising between Earth and Mars. The "cycler" spacecraft would constantly ferry people and materials between the two planets, enabling earthlings to explore, commercially develop and eventually colonize the Red Planet. "We believe these regular planetary flybys would create an entirely new economic and philosophic approach to space exploration," the researchers wrote in a December report prepared for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Reliable, reusable and dependable cycler transportation can be the key to carry humanity into the next great age of exploration, expansion, settlement and multi-planetary commerce." Aldrin is working with a team of researchers, including professors and engineering graduate students at Purdue, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Texas. The former astronaut is an engineer by training and holds a doctorate from MIT. "We are going to put in a proposal for a more detailed study to narrow down some of the choices of the different kinds of cyclers and decide which ones seem to fit into a very nice operational mission," Aldrin said.

The first person to walk on the moon was American astronaut Neil Armstrong. He was followed from the lunar module Apollo 11 by his co-astronaut Buzz Aldrin on July 20th 1969. The two astronauts spent 21 hours on the lunar surface and returned 46 pounds of lunar rocks. The moon walkers left behind a plaque on the lunar surface that read: "Here Men From Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon The Moon. July 1969 A.D. We Came In Peace For All Mankind." Buzz Aldrin was once asked "Did you have fun when you were floating in space?" His answer: "I truly enjoyed the remarkable sensation of having the freedom to move in any direction. It is a feeling I will never forget."

50. TESTIMONY
TESTIMONY. by. Dr. buzz aldrin. Before the. Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.House Committee on Science. June 26, 2001. Hearing on Space Tourism.
http://www.house.gov/science/space/jun26/aldrin.htm
TESTIMONY by Dr. Buzz Aldrin Before the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics House Committee on Science June 26, 2001 Hearing on Space Tourism Mr. Chairman, members of the Space Subcommittee and others, it is a great privilege to speak with you about the future of our space program. After forty years of space exploration, space tourism has emerged as the key to generating the high-volume traffic that will bring down launch costs. NASA’s own research has suggested that tens of millions of U.S. citizens want to travel to space, with far more if the global market is addressed. This immense volume of ticket-buying passengers can be the solution to the problem of high space costs that plague government and private space efforts alike. My passion about this springs from the way that large-scale space tourism leads to space infrastructure that enables broader national goals such as a return to the Moon and the exploration of Mars. This is spelled out in my written testimony, which I would like to submit now. We can have an architecture that meets a broad range of anticipated needs by using space tourism as a catalyst and by focusing now on its likely future evolution.

A speeding ticket written to Jack Swigert and signed by him. This is a carbon copy on pink paperthe portion given to Swigert. It is also accompanied by two carbon copies of letters sent to the Clerk of Courts from Swigert requesting delays in his trial and two letters from the Clerk in response. The correspondence is interesting as Swigert alludes to his work for the government but never identifies himself as an astronaut. During this time, Swigert was a member of the support crew for Apollo 11. Probably unique and ideal for a setting featuring the astronaut the right stuff. 'When we decide to do it, we must be committed to a growing permanence on Mars,' legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin told NewsFactor. 'The investment is so large. To just go with a limited number of people for a limited amount of time, then cease going - we shouldn't have started in the first place.'

Thinking Big Related Stories ... Buzz Aldrin , whose footprints still dot the windless surface of the moon, wants the next step in space exploration to be cruise ships to Mars not with shuffleboard or bad lounge entertainers, though. In an exclusive interview with NewsFactor, Aldrin talked about how he is applying his knowledge and vision along with that of the three universities with which he is collaborating to the challenge of how to get from Earth to the red planet. If Aldrin has his way, there will be a handful of constantly cruising spacecraft, with all the necessary amenities, to carry people and supplies back and forth.

But, you've got to make a decision. You've got to take that first step. If you don't,everything else slides down the road." Before you evaluate the reality of Buzz Aldrin in the flesh and sitting across the table from you, you have to think about who he is. Who he for as long, certainly, as I can remember has always been. He is, before anything else, one of the select. One of the few. One of a handful of people perhaps a dozen, at most on this celestial body who, to our knowledge, has set foot on another. On July 20, 1969, Buzz Aldrin became the second man to walk on the moon, following crew mate Neil Armstrong by less than half an hour. Needless to say, with this buildup of a lifetime, I had expectations. I expected, I don't know, someone with a vast and sophisticated understanding of human nature. A watcher. A listener. Aldrin is now 70, so I expected wisdom in large quantities. Most of all, I guess I expected
