Buzz Aldrin suggests that space tourists could orbit the Earth in 'hotel' stations, perhaps with occasional opportunities to circle the moon, as well. 'The trip to Mars will be much more affordable once we've established viable tourism in low-Earth orbit.'

As a spacecraft nears a planet, its flight path is bent, causing it to whip around the planet while boosting its speed. This "slingshot" trajectory enables a spacecraft to achieve the proper speed and heading. "The cycler essentially is in orbit around the sun and makes regular flybys of Earth and Mars," said team member James Longuski, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Purdue. "Once you put your vehicle into a cycler orbit, it continues on its own momentum, going back and forth between Earth and Mars. You may need to carry some propellant for an occasional boost, but it's pretty much a free trip after that," he added.

Communion on the Moon - Buzz Aldrin
by Bill Carrell Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to walk on the moon in the Apollo 11 space mission. Michael Collins third member of the group, was in charge of the command module, essential for their return to earth, which circled the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin landed. The moon lander touched down at 3:17 Eastern Standard Time, Sunday, July 20, 1969. Aldrin had brought with him a tiny communion kit, given him by his church, that had a silver chalice and wine vial about the size of the tip of his finger. During the morning he radioed, "Houston, this is Eagle. This is the LM pilot speaking. I would like to request a few moments of silence. I would like to invite each person listening in, whoever or wherever he may be, to contemplate for a moment the events of the last few hours, and to give thanks in his own individual way." Buzz Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 20, 1930. His mother, Marion Moon, was the daughter of an Army Chaplain. His father, Edwin Eugene Aldrin, was an aviation pioneer, a student of rocket developer Robert Goddard, and an aide to the immortal General Billy Mitchell. Buzz was educated at West Point, graduating with honors in 1951, third in his class. After receiving his wings, he flew Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in the Korean Conflict, shooting down two MIG-15's. Returning to his education, he earned a Doctorate in Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Manned Space Rendezvous. The techniques he devised were used on all NASA missions, including the first space docking with the Russian Cosmonauts.
In October 1963, Buzz was selected by NASA as one of the early astronauts. In November 1966, he established a new record for Extra-Vehicular Activity in space on the Gemini XII orbital flight mission. Buzz has logged 4500 hours of flying time, 290 of which were in space, including 8 hours of EVA. As Backup Command Module Pilot for Apollo VIII, man's first flight around the moon, he significantly improved operational techniques for astronautical navigation star display. Then, on July 20, 1969, Buzz and Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo XI moon walk, thus becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world. This unprecedented heroic endeavor was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history.

Hearing on Space Tourism: Testimony by Buzz Aldrin Dr. Buzz Aldrin
Mr. Chairman, members of the Space Subcommittee and others, it is a great privilege to speak with you about the future of our space program. After forty years of space exploration, space tourism has emerged as the key to generating the high-volume traffic that will bring down launch costs. NASA 's own research has suggested that tens of millions of U.S. citizens want to travel to space, with far more if the global market is addressed. This immense volume of ticket-buying passengers can be the solution to the problem of high space costs that plague government and private space efforts alike. My passion about this springs from the way that large-scale space tourism leads to space infrastructure that enables broader national goals such as a return to the Moon and the exploration of Mars. This is spelled out in my written testimony, which I would like to submit now.
We can have an architecture that meets a broad range of anticipated needs by using space tourism as a catalyst and by focusing now on its likely future evolution. It would first reduce the costs to orbit of existing payloads by greater then 50%. It then evolves logically into a two-stage-to-orbit system to meet

Buzz Aldrin Continues His Push for Human Exploration of the High Frontier Apollo 11 and Gemini 12 Space walker Buzz Aldrin Appears at Birmingham Southern University - March 13, 2000
The standing-room only crowd "ooohed" and "ahhh'd" as Buzz enlightened them with a splendid account of what it's like on the lunar surface.
This is my good friend and famous editorial cartoonist Scott Stantis with Buzz.
In case you don't know, that's me on the left and Buzz on the right. On July 10, 1969 Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin set out on a journey unprecedented in human history. Neil and Buzz were going to land on the moon and carry out the first ever field expedition by human beings on another planet. These three highly trained and skilled men were taking a ride to the moon on the mightiest rocket ever built. During the launch phase, the astronauts were subjected to violent jerking and swinging motions as the 7.5 million pounds of rocket thrust was vectored this way and that to avoid a catastrophic collision with the 380-foot tall Birmingham steel launch tower. The biomedical sensors indicated that Neil Armstrong’s heart was racing at 110 beats per-minute. Collins was nearing the century mark at 99 beats per-minute. Buzz Aldrin’s heart rate was a more cool and collected 88 beats per-minute. This telling biomedical telemetry is not surprising when you consider the explorers pedigree of Buzz Aldrin. Aldrin’s dad was somewhat of a pioneer aviator himself. In the early days of aviation Aldrin's father made a daring flight over the Alps. He was also a friend of both

Buzz Aldrin proposes a future for space travel
By Jason Wasfy
Class of 2001 Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin (PhD 1963) presented his vision for the future of space travel and planetary colonization at Mars Week, a student-run conference held at MIT on October 1-3. Dr. Aldrin, who in 1969 was the second person to set foot on the moon, predicted that a new generation of reusable space vehicles would allow large-scale "space tourism," bringing more people into space at lower cost. Widely accessible space travel would rekindle public interest in space exploration and discovery, he said. This new public interest would bolster government funding for space programs. Large numbers of space tourists would lower the cost of space travel even further. "Only a large-volume market like public space travel can attack the barrier of high costs," said Dr. Aldrin, who was one of two astronauts to make presentations at Mars Week, a conference organized by ThinkMars, a group of students writing a business plan for Mars travel (MIT Tech Talk, March 31, 1999). He also underscored the importance of increasing the safety and reliability of space travel before large-scale space tourism could begin. A broad private consortium, he said, could fill in the role of large government spending in the development of newer, safer shuttle models.
