"One is no longer so aware of the virtuosity of a dazzlingly gifted poet, but of a telling of real things he has lived and felt, in a poetry that seems the natural speech of people who speak of such things candidly, humorously, generously. This is something so rare that I, for one, return to these poems again and again, and always find myself shaken".

Amichai was among the first to compose poems in colloquial Israeli Hebrew. His language is gently ironic, sometimes passionate or straightforward, or even emotionally dry. Memories from childhood appear in Amichai's work as nostalgic glimpses into a world of peace and innocence: "Remember: even the departure to terrible battles / Passes by gardens and windows / And children playing, a dog barking." Many of his poems are addressed to Jerusalem. Amichai's own life was closely linked to the birth and battle for existence of the State of Israel. In 1982 he received the Israel Prize of Poetry, his country's highest honor. If I forget thee, Jerusalem,
Then let my right be forgotten.
Let my right be forgotten, and my left remember.
Let my left remember, and your right close
And your mouth open near the gate.

Yehuda Amichai
Yehuda Amichai is one of the leading contemporary Hebrew poets. His contribution extends beyond his own literary achievements to an influence that helped create a modern Israeli poetry . Born in Germany to a religiously observant family, Amichai and his family emigrated to Eretz Yisrael in 1935, living briefly in Petach Tikvah before settling in Jerusalem . In World War II he fought with the Jewish Brigade of the British Army, and upon his discharge in 1946, he joined the Palmach . During the War of Independence he fought in the Negev, on the southern front. Following the war, Amichai attended Hebrew University, studying Biblical texts and Hebrew literature, and then taught in secondary schools. Amichai's first volume of poetry, Achshav Uve-Yamim HaAharim Amichai's poetry spans a range of emotions, from laughter to sadness to self-mockery. His work emphasizes the individual who, although conscious and integrally part of the collective experience, ultimately views the world through his personal lens. This individual perspective evinces a candid, honest approach to the outside world. Amichai's canon is also impressive for the volume of work it encompasses, and many individual books of poetry appeared in rapid succession, as well as

Yehuda Amichai Born in Germany, Yehuda Amichai emigrated to Israel when he was twelve. One of the great love poets of modern times, his poems are at once humorous and filled with grief.
even of teaching people how to speak it: the new language required central texts that would affirm its power, its range, its usefulness, its richness. Just a Dante helped solidify vernacular Italian by choosing to write in the demotic instead of classical Latin, just as Chaucer helped solidify English by writing a great epic in the language of everyday life, so Amichai helped solidify modern Hebrew as a language. Owing in large measure to his example, vernacular Hebrew has become the literary language of Israel, instead of the language of the Bible. In Amichai one almost always encounters a delight in figurative language; yet his poems are never pretentious or tedious, since they speak out of the everyday and towards concerns we encounter every day. His great themes are love and loss: he celebrates life with vibrancy and energy and a relish for feeling, yet at the same time he is intensely aware of what is lost as history, both personal and social, shears away from each individual things he or she holds dear.

Yehuda Amichai (1924– ) , one of Israel’s most highly regarded poets, was born in Germany and emigrated to Palestine in 1936. He served in the Jewish Brigade of the British army during World War II and fought in the Negev during Israel’s War of Independence. After the war, Amichai studied biblical texts and Hebrew literature at the Hebrew University. He published his first volume of poetry, Now and in Other Days, in 1955. Amichai’s poetry is a testament to the fact that since the founding of Israel in 1948, Hebrew has become a living, evolving part of the modern world. In both language and content, Amichai’s poetry reflects a mingling of past and present, of classical, heroic ages with contemporary, technological society. In addition to poetry, Amichai has written short stories, novels, plays, and children’s literature. Order Yehuda Amichai's new collection of poetry, Open Closed Open: Poems , from Amazon.com.

I, May I Rest in Peace
I, may I rest in peaceI, who am still living, say, May I have peace in the rest of my life. I want peace right now while I'm still alive. I don't want to waiat like that pious man who wished for one leg of the golden chair of Paradise, I want a four-legged chair right here, a plain wooden chair. I want the rest of my peace now. I have lived out my life in wars of every kind: battles without and within, close combat, face-to-face, the faces always my own, my lover-face, my enemy-face. Wars with the old weaponssticks and stones, blunt axe, words, dull ripping knife, love and hate, and wars with newfangled weaponsmachine gun, missile, words, land mines exploding, love and hate. I don't want to fulfill my parents' prophecy that life is war. I want peace with all my body and all my soul. Rest me in peace.

15. Yehuda Amichai - Press Release

http://www.ithl.org.il/amichai/on.html
The following article appeared in Modern Hebrew Literature, No. 13, 1994, in honor of the poet's seventieth birthday.
THE UNTRANSLATABLE AMICHAI
by Robert Alter This year, Israel's best known poet, Yehuda Amichai, turns 70. Born in Wurzburg, Germany in 1924, he moved with his family to Eretz Israel in 1935. His poetry has been translated into some 29 languages, but Amichai has also published a novel, short stories and a number of plays, and has received the prestigious Israel Prize. In honor of Amichai's birthday, The Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature produced a special bibliography listing his works in translation. His German and Dutch publishers (R. Piper, Munich and Meulenhoff, Amsterdam) are publishing volumes of poetry to mark the occasion, and HarperCollins, Amichai's U.S. publisher, is preparing a landmark edition of some 500 new English translations. Below, Robert Alter considers the popularity of Amichai's poetry abroad. YEHUDA AMICHAI, it has been remarked with some justice, is the most widely translated Hebrew poet since King David. His success in English has been especially spectacular. Many volumes of his poetry are available in apt English translations and they are widely reviewed; his readings draw large crowds all over the United States; a few prominent American poets even claim to have been influenced by him. Predictably, Amichai's popularity abroad has contributed to a certain critical backlash in Israel, one particularly jaundiced recent critic going so far as to claim that this is the sort of stylistically meager poetry in which nothing is lost in translation. In fact, Amichai's continuing popularity in Israel reflects the fact that he is by no means a poet for export only, and despite the liveliness and beguiling character of his poetry in translation, there are aspects of athletic inventiveness in his Hebrew that cannot cross the translation barrier.
