In a Dark Time ...
The Eye Begins to See Thursday, April 04, 2002 The Poetry of A. R. Ammons I have been reading and trying to come to terms with A.R. Ammons The Selected Poems for nearly two weeks now. I have never been introduced to his poetry in any of the many poetry classes I have taken, so I am a little surprised at how much I like his poetry. How could he have been overlooked by so many people I admired?
I see narrow orders, limited tightness, but will
not run to that easy victory:
still around the looser, wider forces work:
I will try
to fasten into order enlarging grasps of disorder, widening scope, but enjoying the freedom that
Scope eludes my grasp, that there is no finality of vision,
that I have perceived nothing completely,
that tomorrow a new walk is a new walk.
Reflective I found a weed that had a mirror in it and that mirror looked in at a mirror in me that had a weed in it Mansion So it came time for me to cede myself and I chose the wind to be delivered to The wind was glad and said it needed all the body it could get to show its motions with and wanted to know willingly as I hoped it would if it could do something in return to show its gratitude When the tree of my bones rises from the skin I said come and whirlwinding

I've never done a "series" before, but I really wanted to post a poem this morning, and I had the idea of posting something every week, and it sounded good to me. I've collected a lot of poetry over the years (and even written some) and I'd like to use this site to build a collection of favorites and poems that inspire me. This one is by A. R. kidney-shaed, testicular and thought all its motions into it,
the 800 mph earth spin,
the 190-million-mile yearly
displacement around the sun, the overriding grand haul of the galaxy w/ the 30,000 mph of where the sun's going: thought all the interweaving motions into myself: dropped the stone to dead rest: the stream from other motions broke rushing over it: shelterless, I turned to the sky and stood still: oh I do not know where i am going that I can live my life by this single creek. Note on the text: The single creek in this case is located in Ithaca, NY, one of two (the other is Fall Creek) which cut 100-foot-deep gorges through the Cornell University campus where Ammons teaches poetry. Much to my Texan friend Martin's chagrin, Cascadilla rhymes with Magilla Gorilla, not manzanilla. While I was attending Cornell, a passed-out co-ed rolled off a frat house terrace and fell 80 feet into Cascadilla gorge. She walked away with only a broken arm, having landed, some say miraculously, on a pregnant racoon. The story was reported locally but didn't make the national news until several weeks later when I chanced upon it in the Weekly World News . Now I know that everything they report must be true.

the water slipping down the side of the street would shame many a river with a big name inscribed on space shots, with a history, with fish; three or four inches this morning and more coming: a flotation medium rising in the basement, alas, a mop and bucket my squeezing remedy: and Phyllis off at a funeral: put down in this much water, one could drown; at least, get wet: but what does the body care that has no spirit in it: it has already drowned in a medium sleep pales before: and the spirit, even: it was just a bit of electricity firing off joints and nets: off, it isn't there anymore: the body, though, is but it has taken on the temperature of the ground and sees no difference in itself: oh

(American 1926-2001)
A. R. Ammons, known to many as one of Twentieth Century America's most distinguished poets, was also an accomplished painter. Ammons, born outside Whiteville, North Carolina, in 1926, started writing poetry aboard a U. S. Navy destroyer escort in the South Pacific during World War II. After completing military service, he attended Wake Forest University and went on to work as a real estate salesman, an editor, and an executive in his father's glass company before he began teaching writing at Cornell University in 1964. Ammons' credits as a poet are extraordinary to say the least. He is the author of nearly thirty books of poetry, among them Glare (W. W. Norton, 1997); Garbage (1993), which won the National Book Award and the A. R. Ammons (1991) Library of Congress Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry; A Coast of Trees (1981), which received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry; Sphere (1974), which received the Bollingen Prize; and Collected Poems 1951-1971 (1972), which won him his second National Book Award. His many other honors include the Tanning Prize, the Poetry Society of America's Robert Frost Medal, the Ruth Lilly Prize, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Prior to his recent death at the age of 75, A. R. Ammons lived in Ithaca, New York, where since 1971 he was Goldwin Smith Professor of Poetry at Cornell University.

A.R. Ammons: The Poet as Painter by Kelsea Habecker Smith
On a purely technical level, Ammons is a poet who places great weight upon the formal elements of poetry. Frequently the significance and impact of a particular poem is revealed through form, line breaks or punctuation, as in this excerpt from his book-length poem Tape for the Turn of the Year , in which the line breaks divulge an emotional tension that undermines the words themselves:
may this song leave
darkness alone, deal
with what
light can win into clarity
if we looked only by
what we know,
heads:
if we were at the
mercy of what we understand, there's unity describe it: nor do words. that's a fact caught up in an abstract configuration These same pressures invariably found their way into his painting as well. To symbolize and resolve them in his poems and his paintings, he was drawn to triangular shapes. Composition 1*** this motion going on . . .
