T he reaper, which revolutionized agriculture in America, was invented in the early 1800s on the McCormick plantation in Rockbridge County. Robert McCormick has been credited with involvement in the reaper's creation. His son, Cyrus, later received the patent on the reaper and went on to mass produce it at what was to become International Harvester Co. in Chicago. But little has been said about Jo Anderson, a slave on the McCormick family plantation, whom McCormick descendants and some historians acknowledge as a major contributor to the design and creation of the reaper. Jo Anderson "has as much to do with the later development of the reaper as Cyrus McCormick," said Lester R. Godwin Jr., retired curator of the McCormick Farm in Augusta and Rockbridge counties. "Unfortunately, history likes to put things in neat boxes . . . and often those who are involved in the creation of something don't get credit for it." Because of the nature of slavery, historians and researchers have found the contributions of slaves to particular inventions difficult to trace. Much of their work is unacknowledged. However, in his 1931 book, "The Century of the Reaper," Cyrus' grandson, Cyrus McCormick, gave Anderson credit.

MARY JO ANDERSON Sacramento Bishop William Weigand is making headlines doing what bishops are supposed to do, calling the faithful back to the teachings of the faith. Gov. Gray Davis of California and other "Catholic" politicians like Nancy Pelosi or John Kerry who trumpet their support for abortion "...put their souls at risk and are not in good standing with the church", said Weigand.
Governor Gray Davis Bishop William K. Weigand Sacramento, California's Bishop William K. Weigand stated the obvious this week: The emperor has no clothes. Nothing excites Catholics like a bishop on the march. Hundreds of Catholic blog pages and cyber-lists jammed my e-mail: "A bishop who actually functions as a bishop is called to do! Let's pray John Kerry's bishop speaks up next." The governor's defenders tossed a silly salvo, chiding Bishop Weigand for "telling the faithful how to practice their faith." Yes, Virginia, the bishop is supposed to tell the faithful how to practice their faith. A bishop shepherds his flock from the cathedral, taken from

UN Globalization Efforts And Progress
By Mary Jo Anderson The final months of the Jubilee year witnessed three pivotal encounters between the Church and an emerging system of global governance. The Millennium Peace Summit, sponsored by the United Nations (UN) and bankrolled by Ted Turner, honorary chair, gathered world religious leaders in New York August 28-31. Immediately following that controversial assembly, Mikhail Gorbachev convened his State of the World Forum to craft "a new paradigm for civilization on the threshold of the millennium." The forum spent six days proposing the shape of globalism and demanded an expanded role for the UN in the 21st century to carry out the new paradigm. As the forum reached its climax, the UN Millennium Summit opened with a historical, largest-ever gathering of heads of state. An underlying thread for all three events was a reconfigured worldview for mankind at the frontier of the third millennium. Gone is the Judeo-Christian understanding of man. In its place is a generically spiritualized "sovereign individual" whose human rights are determined by the demands of the global economy and ecology, guaranteed by the UN, and enforced by global "peacekeepers." Within days of the closing of the Millennium Summit, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, sharply denounced "New World Order" (

J O, SOUNDS like a boy's name, doesn't it? But this Jo is no regular old Jo, but a charismatic, intelligent and beaming 16-year-old female student who has no airs, although awarded a scholarship to a prestigious United World College (UWC) in Canada. Jo Anderson-Figueroa is scheduled to arrive at Lester B. Pearson College of Canada at the end of August. She is preparing assiduously to take on the lessons, including the various languages which will be taught. Recently returning from the "very Caribbean, but European-looking" Martinique, where she spent two weeks with relatives polishing her French skills. "I'm better now but I still have to improve on my reading skills," she remarked. But don't think French is the only other language this teen commands, she also speaks Spanish and the rather difficult German. With the ability of languages one would assume that her aspirations lies within the field, however, Jo is "undecided", being wise and keeping her options open. Even though her other sister, Petra, was last year awarded a UWC scholarship to India, Jo says she felt no pressure of also winning but, was however overjoyed to being awarded. When one of the interviewers of the college telephoned her at home to tell her she was selected, she said she could only utter, "Wow!".

A Moment of Silence for Jo Anderson
Ms. Jo Anderson, who worked as receptionist and bookkeeper for Dr. William Holmberg, chief fund-raiser for the Wilk et al., anti-trust suit, passed away August 9, 1993. Ms. Anderson was Dr. Holmberg's receptionist for 19 years, and was the secretary/bookkeeper for the Wilk et al., anti-trust fund-raising committee for 15 years. Even up to the time of her death, she was responsible for sending out pledge reminders thousands of them and did all of the bookkeeping for the case. There have been over 10,000 separate contributions since 1978, and Ms. Anderson filed and listed every one of them. Through her numerous phone calls and letters, many of the donors got to know her personally. Dr. Holmberg, president of the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation (CCF), explained that every time Ms. Anderson would send out one of the many mailers requesting donations, she would give a nickname to the mailer. She called the final one she mailed out "TOLO," short for "This One Last One," because she was so confident that chiropractic would triumph. One of the four chiropractic defendants in the Wilk et al., case, Michael Pedigo, DC, offered these comments on Ms. Anderson's passing:
