23. Bright Lights Film Journal | Jack Smith
Nan Goldin, laurie anderson, Robert Wilson, and John Waters are among those who credit Jack Smiths singular vision with inspiring their own art.

flame still sears
BY GARY MORRIS Perhaps the most prodding of the pack was queer film artiste Jack Smith (1932-1989). The emphasis on film is misleading and limiting, however. Smith, who was raised in trailers in Ohio and Texas Flaming Creatures and Normal Love
Flaming Creatures Flaming Creatures
(1963) was not his first film; that distinction belongs to The Buzzards of Baghdad By all accounts, Smith was difficult but charismatic, a magical trickster manically involved in all kinds of projects at all times. Never far from poverty in spite of a few grants here and there, he was gifted in seducing actors and friends to work for free and in "appropriating" materials he needed for his art. For Creatures and the films that followed, he used cheap, sometimes discarded, color reversal stock to immortalize the drag queens , mermaids, vampires , naked poets, and other "creatures" who populate his films. The effect is of a dream that stubbornly resists consciousness, the imagery sometimes subtle and painterly, sometimes stark and high-contrast in rendering the filmmaker’s ecstasy-drenched demimondes. Smith was raised on Hollywood kitsch, and the imagery of 1940s movie monsters, and especially his patron saint Maria Montez — to whom he built an altar and prayed — inspired him. Always a good talker, he insisted on Montez’s importance as an actress to all who would listen (and there were many). He called her "the Holy One" and "the Miraculous One." After a screening of one of her films, he told a friend, "The Miraculous One was raging and flaming. Those are the standards for art."

Laurie Halse Anderson
BIO
Laurie Halse Anderson grew up in Syracuse, New York, and now lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two daughters. SPEAK, nominated for the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, is her first novel. She is also the author of three picture books, NO TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY, TURKEY POX, and NDITO RUNS. INTERVIEW Intrigued by the cover - a girl's haunted eyes peering through a tree - TBB Editorial Manager Dana Schwartz read and fell in love with SPEAK, a first novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. The main character, Melinda Sordino, is a fourteen-year-old high school freshman who is harboring a big secret behind her bitten lips and downcast eyes. In this interview, author Laurie Halse Anderson explores why high school can be so brutal, who you can talk to when you are hurting, and how to stay safe. She also dishes out some killer advice for teens and their parents - discover Laurie and her wonderful book SPEAK on Teenreads.com.
TBB: Starting your freshman year of high school is hard enough without being ostracized by the entire school. This is what happens to Melinda in your book SPEAK after she calls the cops on a big end-of-the-summer party. But no one, not even her best friends, bother to find out why she called the police. Do you think people find it easier to jump to conclusions rather than digging to find out the truth?

10:47 AM Apr. 10, 1998 PT When matzo breaks in cyberspace, does it make a sound? These and other questions will be answered Sunday night at the 3rd annual Cyberseder , an alt.star-studded interactive Passover meal that will be netcast live from Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall in New York City at 7:30 p.m. Produced by the KnitMedia, an extension of Tribeca's progressive music club, the Knitting Factory , the seder is scheduled to feature a host of downtown legends including Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, and John Zorn. It's all part of an ambitious plan to expand the netcasting services of NYC clubs.

Michael Dorf, Knitting Factory owner, says he hopes this event, like the ones before, will allow the artists and attendees to "connect, be together, and share some discussion about their Jewish identity." The interface will include a virtual Haggadah prayer book, chat rooms, plus live audio and video streams. Most netcasts are limited to a few dozen streams; the Cyberseder will have 200,000 simultaneous streams made available by Microsoft and Exodus ISP, giving it the potential to be the largest online broadcasting event yet. That is, of course, assuming people tune in.

    Laurie Anderson: Speak My Language
Laurie Anderson's "Performance Art" has been surprising everyone (including probably herself) for over 25 years. From audible tables to audiotape violins to naturalistic installations, Laurie has never been bound by the constraints of what has already been proven. Laurie is presently touring the US with her Speed of Darkness show and has completed an opera based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick . More importantly, she contributed to the RUGRATS movie soundtrack! Also the new Puppet Motel CD-ROM for PC's has been released (after only 3 years!).

is back on-line after a bit of a scuffle with InterNIC. This means the brightred mailing list and brightred.trilidun.org are back. Laurie Anderson Armed to her teeth with a collection of stories, random techno-instruments, and a couple microphones Laurie Anderson is quite an impressive foe. She has consistently intrigued me out of periods of morbid apathy. For this I like her. "The thing that scares me is that every day technology is getting more global, corporate, monolithic and impossible to escape. Recently someone said the saddest thing about the fall of the Berlin wall is that you can no longer defect. There's nowhere left to go. And now that technology is everywhere in the world, most artists, like everyone else, are having to figure it out."
And you're alone on an island now tuning in.

    Anderson, Laurie
(1947- ), performance artist, composer, and writer Born on June 5, 1947, in Wayne, Illinois, Laurie Anderson began studying classical violin at five years of age and later performed with the Chicago Youth Symphony. In 1966 she moved to New York City, where she attended Barnard College (B.A., 1969) and Columbia University (M.F.A., 1972). For two years, she taught art history at the City University of New York. One of Anderson's early performance art pieces was Automotive (1972), for which she orchestrated car horns at the Town Green in Rochester, Vermont. In Duets on Ice, another early piece performed at various public sites, Anderson appeared in ice skates frozen in blocks of ice; she then proceeded to play a duet with herself on an altered violin that she described as like a "ventriloquist's dummy"she replaced the bow hair with pre-recorded audiotape and the string with a tape head. The piece ended as soon as the ice melted. To support her work in performance art, Anderson worked as a freelance interviewer and art critic for ARTnews and Artforum.

    39. Hebbel-Theater
Interview mit laurie anderson von Tom Stromberg im Jahre 1991.
    http://www.hebbel-theater.de/seiten/archiv/theaterschrift/anderson.html

WILD AT HEART by Laurie Halse Anderson Author Information
Laurie Halse (rhymes with "waltz") Anderson pretended she was a polar bear when she walked to school through the snow of Syracuse, New York. As a little girl, she would pound away at her father's old typewriter for hours, writing newspaper columns, stories, and letters. She loved watching her father write poetry and reading the funnies on the floor of his office.
Laurie fell in love with words when her second-grade teacher taught her how to write haiku. Her favorite book is the dictionary, which is a good thing because she is a terrible speller. She tried to read every book in her school library, a heavenly place. She loves librarians! One of her favorite books was HEIDI. This led to curiosity about foreign cultures. As a senior in high school, she was an American Field Service exchange student to Denmark, where she lived on a pig farm. She had a great time there and can still speak Danish. When she came back to the United States, she attended Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York, then transferred to Georgetown University where she earned a bachelors degree in Languages and Linguistics.
