http://www.geocities.com/~oldbrit/bkcook.html
THE COOK
In May 1996 there was an unconfirmed report that the lost Arbuckle/Keaton film "The Cook" had been found and screened at the Haugesund Film Festival in Norway. "The Cook", released in 1918 and starring Roscoe Arbuckle, Buster Keaton, Al St. John, Alice Lake, Glen Cavender and Luke, the dog, was considered by some not to exist but to have been an alternate title for "The Rough House" (1917). This confusion was further complicated by the late Raymond Rohauer mislabelling his copy of "The Rough House" he found in Eastern Europe as "The Cook" , an error probably made because both films have similarities in plot line. Now "The Cook" has not only been found but beautifully restored in its original tinting of orange and pale purple. The decomposing nitrate footage was found in the vaults of the Norwegian Film Institute by Jan Olsson, from Stockholm University and the restoration work was done by The Media Lab at the National Library of Norway, supervised by Lars Gaustad. As Gaustad said, ""The Cook" would never have survived a screening as it was in a terrible condition. It took months of repair just to make it able to pass through renovation and a modified optical printer to match the shrinkage."

Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, the butterball silent comedian who rivaled Charlie Chaplin in popularity, may have done terrible sexual things to actress Virginia Rappe the night of September 5, 1921, resulting in her death. There were no first-hand witnesses, and he, denying all, escaped prosecution through two hung juries and a mistrial. Though never found guilty, Arbuckle saw his films banned, his lucrative Hollywood contract cancelled. He never recovered his career, and died out of the limelight in 1933 at age 46. His reputation today? The only thing recalled is that night of infamy, immortalized by gruesome pages in Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon and by (rotund James Coco played him) the 1975 Merchant-Ivory The Wild Party. But what of his movies? Recently, Kino Video has remastered two volumes of Arbuckle's 1917-1920 two-reel shorts, which he directed and starred in for Paramount Pictures, and all of which co-star his pal, Buster Keaton. Arbuckle is a nimble talent, comfortable with his 266-pound rhino frame, whether chasing a young sweet thing, doing somersaults, or prancing about in drag. His rubbery baby face and barndoor rear both figure in the action. A special treat: commissioned original music by Boston's own Alloy Orchestra, stretching beyond percussion and electric piano with banjo, accordion, and even Theremin. A wish: that the Alloys find an occasion to play live to the one lost masterpiece on the DVD's, Arbuckle's surrealist madhouse caper, Good Night Nurse!

FATTY ARBUCKLE at KEYSTONE Vol. 1
Roscoe Arbuckle, affectionately known to the world as "Fatty" Arbuckle, was probably Sennett's first major discovery and it was Arbuckle who took the Keystones to the next level in comedy development after Sennett got it started. Certainly he was a major influence on Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton, who all got their start in Arbuckle films. "FATTY AND MABEL ADRIFT" is classic era Arbuckle with developed characters, superior photography, and exciting climaxes. "FATTY JOINS THE FORCE" speaks for itself with Roscoe becoming a Keystone Cop . Unfortunately he gets no respect from the local kids in the neighborhood and winds up in jail himself! In "THE SPEED KINGS"

Re: Fatty Arbuckle's Shorts
David Pearson who runs a website (Arbucklmania) devoted to Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle passed on to me the following info: Buckey Grimm - Yes, I've heard of it. There's info on it at http://silent-movies.com/Arbucklemania/Tri1916.html It's memorable for being one of Weber & Fields few film appearences. You're probabably wondering what the heck a bunch of Broadway stars are doing in an Arbuckle Keystone short, under the tight budgets of Mack Sennett. This film was made shortly after the Triangle merger of the Sennett, Griffith, and Ince studios by Harry Aitkens. Aitkens immediately came up with the brilliant idea of throwing away a lot of money on Broadway stars in an attempt to bring their name value to films. So suddenly Sennett was stuck with a bunch of very expensive stage comedians, with absolutely no film experience. So... this film happened, with Arbuckle and company meeting the "Broadway Stars"... and the "Broadway Stars" were shipped back to Broadway, while a bunch of offended Keystone players where left wondering why they got such lousy pay, when they were carrying the films. Salaries went up... and Triangle quickly went bankrupt David. - From: "Scott W. Allen" <sallen@GWM.SC.EDU> Reply-To: Association of Moving Image Archivists <AMIA-L@LSV.UKY.EDU> To: AMIA-L@LSV.UKY.EDU Subject: Fatty Arbuckle's Shorts Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 14:09:13 -0400 Speaking of Fatty Arbuckle (?), does anyone know the status of a film he made in 1915, called "Fatty and the Broadway Stars"? I saw what little the IMDB site has to say about it, including that it's not available on video, but I was wondering if anyone on the list knew if it still existed in some form. No biggie, just idle curiosity (and the pleasure of being connected to so many film-knowledgeable peeps around the world...8^). Scott Allen sallen@gwm.sc.edu Newsfilm Library

D uring his tenure at Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios, Fatty Arbuckle starred in well over 100 shortsand all these shorts were filmed during little more than three years. Such a frenzied pace didn't allow for many subtleties. Indeed, the Keystone shorts are some of the most manic comedies ever committed to celluloid. Filled with pratfalls, pie fights, and chases, the Keystone comedies piled action upon action with nary a moment of quiet. From all signs, Arbuckle accepted the Keystone comic credo with few complaints: "I endeavor to cater to the masses as well as the classes, not forgetting the kids. Children like the purely physical comedythe fall and the knockdownand the more exaggerated the action, the more they laugh. The average person watching a comedy on the screen does not want to be compelled to thinkto figure out a piece of businessso that there is always a little hesitancy in dealing with satire and the little subtleties that are enjoyed by the clever people. When Arbuckle broke ranks with Sennett in 1917 to make comedies for producer Joseph M. Schenck, he finally had the opportunity to show the distance between the Sennett approach and his own. However, if anything, Arbuckle's own shorts are even more manic than Sennett's. They're a madhouse of commotionwhich is surprising considering the presence of Buster Keaton. Arbucle had enlisted Keaton's support after seeing his stage act. He felt Keaton's amazing pratfalls and quiet presence would work well with his own predilection for physical comedy. Keaton dropped his stage career entirely for a stint with Arbuckle. Although new to film, Keaton took an immediate interest in the production process. One of his first actions was to completely dismantle a camera so that he could better understand how it operated.

Roscoe Arbuckle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle March 24 January 29 ) was an American silent film comedian who gained the nickname "Fatty" from his portly frame and who is best known for his involvement in the "Fatty Arbuckle scandal". He began his career with the Keystone Kops comedies, eventually leaving and starring in a series of short films that won him acclaim and fortune around the world; at the height of his popularity, he was outshone only by Charlie Chaplin . He discovered Buster Keaton and made him a star; the duo became fast friends off the set. Roscoe Arbuckle's career is seen by many film historians as one of the great tragedies of Hollywood. At the height of his career, he suddenly found himself arrested and placed on trial for his role in the death of rising starlet
