Pound hyllade i första hand uppfinnarna. Mästarna, det är dom som fulländar det uppfinnarna hittar på. Som när Shakespeare fullföljde det Marlowe satte igång inom det elisabetanska dramat, ungefär.

P o e t s C h a t POETS ON POETRY : Daniel Kane interviews poets about their poems, their poetics, and their ideas on how to teach poetry to students in grades K-12. This month, John Ashbery talks about the process of writing poetry and discusses how one can use the poem to explore as opposed to "express." Poet On Poetry Menu Poem Sample Interview with Poet Download Reading Of "What is Poetry" By John Ashbery ... John Ashbery's Poem John Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York. A graduate of Harvard University, he has had what can only be described as an astonishing career in poetry. Ashbery has won many, many prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Bollingen Prize, and the National Book Award. His most recent book is Wakefulness . A long poem entitled Girls on the Run , based on the paintings of "outsider" artist Henry Darger, has been published this spring by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. I thought it would be good to put one of John Ashbery's poems on-line and totalk to him about it especially about how one could teach the poem to people of high-school age. So, read the poem, and then read the transcript of the conversation Ashbery and I had. Then I encourage you to bring the poem into your classrooms and share it with your students. WHAT IS POETRY (back to top) The medieval town, with frieze Of boy scouts from Nagoya? The snow That came when we wanted it to snow? Beautiful images? Trying to avoid Ideas, as in this poem? But we Go back to them as to a wife, leaving The mistress we desire? Now they Will have to believe it As we believed it. In school All the thought got combed out: What was left was like a field. Shut your eyes, and you can feel it for miles around. Now open them on a thin vertical path. It might give uswhat?some flowers soon?

  • "The Voice of the Poet: John Ashbery" John Ashbery is one of America's most acclaimed living poets, and his work has been honored with the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, all in 1976. His more recent books include "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror" (1992) and "Your Name Here" (2000). "Paradigms of common experience" is Ashbery's label for his own poems: the mind listening for its haphazard memories and unconcious desires while hearing the world's buzzing distractions. The task of his poetry remains constant to explore how we receive information and make meanings, then how those meanings are transformed. Pop culture and high romance go hand in hand. From the start of his career, Ashbery has been among the most innovative poets in the language, and he has kept his work open to both experiment and tradition.

by John Ashbery In 1956 the Yale University Press published the collection Some Trees Some Trees continues to be regularly reprinted in English. Melcion Mateu Adrover, winner of the prestigious Octavio Paz Poetry Award (1998) and a contributing editor to TBR, recently translated Some Trees Some Trees These are amazing: each
Joining a neighbor, as though speech
    Were a still performance.
Arranging by chance To meet as far this morning
    From the world as agreeing
    With it, you and I
Are suddenly what the trees try To tell us we are:
    That their merely being there
    Means something; that soon
We may touch, love, explain. And glad not to have invented Such comeliness, we are surrounded: A silence already filled with noises, A canvas on which emerges A chorus of smiles, a winter morning. Placed in a puzzling light, and moving, Our days put on such reticence These accents seem their own defense.

    72. [ash] The Instruction Manual (John Ashbery)
. john ashbery is too fashionable critically unassailable, and The InstructionManual (text below) too delightful provocative a poem, for me to feel like
    http://www.drizzle.com/~ash/9901/imagined/ashbery.html
The Instruction Manual text below The Ungrateful Citizens (also in this imagining-of-cities-gallery); the other (in the right-hand column) is an excerpt from David Lehman's new book on the New York School of poetry, The Last Avant-Garde Links on Ashbery:
  • buy book from Amazon
  • etc... In the end, the New York School of poetry has less to do with the city than with a state of mind to which the poet would like to travel. "The Instruction Manual," the most admired poem in Ashbery's first book, Some Trees , tells of this state of mind. The poem records a daydream about escaping from a boring office in New York City, where the task of writing a manual "on the uses of a new metal" faces the dreamer, a professional writer, who succeeds in willing himself temporarily to sunny Guadaljara.... The dreamer beholds a storybook spectacle whose charms are all on the surface.... The poem is not really about Guadaljara at all. It is rather a parable of the imagination with its power to fulfil desire and supply any lack. The imagination provides a vehicle of escape into a Guadaljara better than the real thing if only because the metal traveler is spared the inconveniences of packing bags, booking rooms, exchanging currency, and suffering from indigestion. But the vision also has a tragic propensity for vanishing. "What else is there to do but stay, and that we cannot do," Ashbery writes in a modern restatement of the pathos at the end of the departed vision in Keats's "Ode to a Nightingale" ("Adieu! The fancy cannot cheat so well / As she is famed to do, deceiving elf").... Ashbery... is at heart a Romantic poet, who conceives of the Imagination as a realm apart from experience, or reality, or time, to which it lends the redemptive enchantment that we seek in art and that may come closer to fulfilling the promise of happiness than any form of human activity.

    New York State Poet
"It is a great pleasure to be named the State Poet of New York. I've spent most of my life here, having been born in Rochester and raised on a farm near Lake Ontario. For most of the last 50 years I've lived in NYC, and spent time as well in the upper Hudson Valley. So I guess New York has always been home, all along, and now that it's official it feels even more so." J ohn Ashbery was born in Rochester, NY on 28 July, 1927. In 1949 he received his B.A. in English from Harvard, where he served on the editorial board of The Harvard Advocate and, (fitting for his selection as "Class Poet") wrote his senior honors thesis on the poetry of W.H. Auden. Ashbery then went on to complete an M.A. in English Literature from Columbia University in 1951. Some Trees , in 1956. Published in the Yale Series of Younger Poets, this volume established Ashbery's style of creating highly original juxtapositions of words and images. As Douglas Crase observed in The Nation : "Ashbery has created a language that restores newness as you read, a language that is always cresting with potential like a wave."
