    Joseph Rayner Stephens (1805-1879)
Dictionary of National Biography : from the earliest times to 1900 (London, Oxford University Press, 1949). JR Stephens was a social reformer. He was the sixth child of John Stephens (1772-1841), by his wife, Rebecca Eliza Rayner, of Wethersfield, Essex. Stephens was born at Edinburgh on 8 March 1805. His father, a native of St. Dennis, Cornwall, became a Methodist preacher in 1792, and was president of the Wesleyan conference in 1827. George Stephens (1813-1895) was his brother. Joseph entered Manchester grammar school in 1819, where he made friends with William Harrison Ainsworth and Samuel Warren (1807-1877). He was also at the Methodist school, Woodhouse Grove, near Leeds, and in 1823 taught in a school at Cottingham, East Riding In July 1825 he became a Methodist preacher, and was appointed in 1826 to a mission station at Stockholm. He was soon able to preach in Swedish, and acquired a taste for Scandinavian literature, which he communicated to his younger brother, George. He attracted the notice of Benjamin Bloomfield, first baron Bloomfield, then plenipotentiary at Stockholm, who made him his domestic chaplain. He also enjoyed a brief but ardent friendship with Montalembert, who spent some time at Stockholm in 1829. Stephens was ordained as a Wesleyan minister in 1829, and stationed at Cheltenham in 1830. His Wesleyan career ended in 1834, when he resigned under suspension for attending disestablishment meetings in Ashton-under-Lyne circuit. He had joined, under

I have one of his earliest photographs taken of a young man printed on card measuring 2½" x 4". On the reverse is inscribed the name " J Buckley Hurst, Photographic Studios ". The premises are " 51.53 Hillgate Street ". In 1879 the family eventually left Hillgate Street and moved to the small hamlet of Waterhouses in Ashton to begin what was to be a very busy and fruitful venture. The 1888 Slater’s Royal National Directory of Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield, Hyde and Stalybridge makes reference to Joseph Buckley " Photographer and Dining Rooms Daisy Nook ". The same Slater’s Directory has their old house at 53 Hillgate Street as a "

    Ashton-under-Line
Ashton-under-Line is a small, but populous and much improving town; it is pleasantly situated on a gentle eminence, in the south-east corner of the county of Lancaster, on the north side of the river Tame. There was formerly a market held here every Wednesday. Though the custom has been discontinued for many years. It also appears, by a very ancient record, that Ashton formerly enjoyed the privileges of a borough; how the charter was lost in unknown. Ashton Church is a large gothic structure; the living, a valuable rectory, is in the gift of the Earl of Stamford. The trade of Ashton has, at least, kept pace with the other populous places around it; the cotton factories are numerous, the population fast increasing, and the town, at this day, may truly be considered of much commercial consequence in the district. The canal from Manchester to Ashton, Oldham, etc. has added much to the improvement and comfort of the surrounding neighbourhood. Ashton is seven miles from Manchester; in 1811 the number of its inhabitants was upwards of 10,000. NB. note the spelling of Ashton-under-Lyne
