writes about the making of the award-winning video, shown at the Movie 2002 Festival.
The River Lee Country Park is only a quarter of a mile from my front door. Walks led to cycle rides, without, then with, a video camera. The park's notice boards showed there were many visually interesting events planned throughout the year, and from all this came the idea of the video. To cover life in the Park throughout one year seemed a sensible idea, and A Park for All Seasons Wouldn't It be LuverLee ("My Fair Lady"?)!! A Park for All Seasons it remained!!! I wrote to the Park Authority saying who I was, and explaining what I'd like to do. They obviously did not know what to expect, but allowed me to browse through their small library for a bit of historical background, and agreed that I could accompany the Rangers on their Activity Events. What they would not do, however, was let me near any activity involving children, unless I had the express agreement of every parent. So, all the filming that involved children was preceded by a public announcement from me about what I was doing, and asking parental permission to film their children. No one refused! The Rangers were superb - helpful, friendly and really eloquent, happy to stand in front of a camera and talk, and with the knack of explaining everything fully, clearly and succinctly.

Interview:
JOHN ASTIN By Scott Wheeler
(Originally published in The Enterprise newspaper,
Brockton, MA. USA in October 1998.) The Addams Family, is set to showcase the tragic, but triumphant life of the original "master of the macabre" in his highly acclaimed one-man show, Edgar Allan Poe: Once Upon A Midnight, next week at the Company Theatre. For Astin, Once Upon A Midnight is the latest milestone in a remarkable journey that has taken the former math major from Baltimore to a dazzling career encompassing thousands of stage performances, hundreds of TV shows, more than two dozen feature films, and both Oscar and Emmy nominations. Astin makes full use of his vast stage experience and his brilliant range of serio-comic talents in the role of Edgar Allan Poe. As he takes the audience through the stages of the author’s life, Astin vividly evokes Poe’s unhappy childhood, his battles with alcohol and medical crises, his lifelong poverty, and his death at 40 in 1849 under mysterious circumstances. Selections from many of Poe’s best-known works, including "The Raven" and "The Pit And The Pendulum," are featured in the play, and more than half of the lines in the script are Poe’s, taken directly from his vast output of poems, stories and essays. "Considering the brevity of his life," Astin says, "his output was amazing."

Interview with Stanford Researcher John Astin, PhD
Editor's note: John Astin, PhD, is with the Stanford University Center for Research in Disease Prevention. The genesis of this interview was Dr. Astin's paper, "Why Patients Use Alternative Medicine: Results of a National Study," published in the May 20, 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association. ¬ with various forms of alternative medicine. For example, the Eisenberg study in 1993 reported that 34% of adults in the United States have used at least one "unconventional" form of health care during the previous year. The reasons behind the use of alternative procedures are not clearly understood. Through written survey, Dr. Astin examined possible predictors of alternative health care including health status, attitudes toward conventional medicine and demographics. The top four treatment categories were chiropractic (15.7%); lifestyle diet (8%); exercise/movement (7.2%); and relaxation (6.9%). Chiropractic was listed as being the first or second most frequently used form of care for severe headaches (1st), sprain/strains (1st), arthritis (2nd) and chronic pain (2nd). The interview that follows provides insight into Dr. Astin's observations regarding alternative health care. Dr. Cleveland:

http://www.centurytel.net/theosophy/pete.astin.poe.html
Stage Review Article Edgar Allan Poe - Once Upon A Midnight Pete Stieler On October 5th, 2001, I attended a play at Ferris State University’s Williams Auditorium. It was a stage production called Edgar Allan Poe - Once Upon A Midnight written by Paul Day Clemens with Ron Magid and directed by Alan Bergmann. Actor John Astin was the solo performer. Beloved as "Gomez Addams" in the original Addams Family television series from the 1960s, and Harry Anderson’s father, “Uncle Buddy”, in the television series Night Court, Astin has had a long career on stage and screen as well. Many of his roles have been fun, offbeat and zany. However, this play took on some very serious subject matter. What I thought I knew about Edgar Allan Poe was turned entirely upside down. John Astin’s heart-felt portrayal of Poe was stunning. It turns out Poe’s literary executor and biographer, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, was responsible for the bad image we have of Poe today. I sat in awe of Astin’s performance as a new Edgar Allan Poe was revealed. Like alot of people, I was led to believe that Poe was a genius but also a pathetic alcoholic who sometimes indulged in laudanum (an opium and alcohol mixture) and wrote morose stories while in a deranged, drug-induced fog. How very wrong I was! Through Astin’s performance, it became clear that the many famous stories written by Poe were wrought from immense grief while the women in his life succumbed slowly to consumption, or tuberculosis as it is known today. All the while Poe was trying to earn love and respect from a very stern and emotionally distant stepfather, John Allan. Torment and anguish were enormous factors in shaping Poe’s life. His writing now seemed more autobiographical than fiction to me. True horror!
