August 31, 2002: get the book in a new edition from Amazon.com Malcolm Boyd's Bach-biography from 1983 has been re-issued in German (2000, DVA). It covers the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach, who died 250 years ago. The author examines in detail the Bach-dynasty of musicians. Having several generations of a family dedicated to music was nothing unusual at that time, as the examples of the Scarlatti's in Italy, the Couperin's in France and the Purcell's in England show, just to mention the outstanding dynasties.
According to Boyd, Johann Sebastian Bach, born in 1685 in Eisenach, needed a window to open him up new horizons, a catalyst that could help him develop his mature style. After having worked in some minor cities, Weimar became the window, Vivaldi and the style of the Italian modern concert the catalyst. Bach worked there as choirmaster and organist ( Kantor ) from 1708 to 1717. Afterwards, from 1717 to 1723, he moved to Köthen, situated one hundred kilometers north of Weimar. The city was the residence of the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen since 1603. In Bach's time, Prince Leopold was a good violinist, gambist, cellist and bass singer. But after his marriage in December 1721, it quickly became clear that his wife did not share the Prince's passion for music - and for the arts in general. Bach later called her an "

) was the most significant member of the Bach dynasty of musicians. He excelled his forebears and contemporaries, but he did not always receive the respect he deserved in his own lifetime. In 1708 he was appointed court organist in Weimar where he composed most of his works for organ. In Leipzig he eventually took charge of the "University Collegium musicum" and occupied himself with the collection and publication of many of his earlier compositions. Despite widespread neglect for almost a century after his death, Bach is now regarded as one of the greatest of all composers and is still an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians. Johann Sebastian Bach Works The six Brandenburg Concertos, BWV 1046 - 1051, dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, feature a variety of forms and groups of instruments, while the four Orchestral Suites or Overtures, BWV 1066 - 1069, include the famous "Air on the G string", a late 19th century transcription of the "Air from the Suite in D major", BWV 1068. Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany. His career is among the wonders of music. Bach wrote hundreds of compositions and is considered the greatest genius of baroque music. Bach was a devout Lutheran and his religious views are reflected in his works. He felt that everything people do and believe has to do with religion. Bach, and many other composers of his time, believed that baroque music helped protect people from the advance of doubt bred by Renaissance ideas of scientific, rational inquiry. Bach believed he could best serve his church, and the people around him, through his music. Född i musiksläkt
Johann Sebastian Bach föddes 21 mars i Eisenach i Tyskland.

Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach (March 21, 1685 - July 28, 1750) was a German Baroque composer. He is generally ranked among history's greatest and most influential composers. His compositions often embody profound intellectual depth, emotional power, and technical command.
Bach is especially noted for his complex and ingenious contrapuntal writing; more than any other composer, Bach is associated with the fugue. The best known example of his fugal writing is probably The Well-Tempered Clavier , which comprises 48 preludes and fugues, two for each major and minor key. Another work with much fugal writing is The Art of Fugue , which was incomplete when Bach died. There are 14 fugues (called Contrapuncti by Bach), all based on the same theme. Bach wrote much of his music for the Lutheran Church; in particular, his many cantatas were composed for normal Sunday services, and the St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion were composed for special services on Good Friday. His family life was substantial. Of the 13 children his wife bore him, several survived to become respected composers in their own right: most notably C.P.E. Bach

IX: Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was born into the musical family of Bachs in Eisenach in 1685. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, had held the post of a court trumpeter in Eisenach along with that of head of the town piper band, and according to his household rules, the young Johann Sebastian was trained not only as a clavier player, but on several instruments. From 1693 to 1695 he attended the Lateinschule in Eisenach. In 1694, when he was nine, his mother died, and in 1695, his father. On the death of his father he was taken into the house of his eldest brother, Johann Christoph, who was organist in Ohrdruf. From 1695 to 1700 he attended the Gymnasium there, and also became a pupil of his brother who had studied with Johann Pachelbel in Erfurt, and (according to the 1754 obituary) 'under his guidance he laid the foundations of his keyboard playing.'
Partitas. Johann Adam Reinken
Bach's first, though only brief, professional engagement was as a court violinist in the private band of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, from March to July 1703.

. For the citizens of Arnstadt the stormy development of their ambitious organist must have been bewildering. The consistory complained 'that he had hitherto made many curious variations in the chorale, and mingled many strange notes in it;' furthermore they deplored that Bach took no interest in the figured music for the choir. This last clearly indicates that Bach in fact quite consciously devoted himself to the purely organistic, and certainly more to playing than to composing, since very few compositions have been preserved from those years.
