Twenty children born of two marriages testify to the one, his remarkably profuse catalogue of sacred music to the other. This latter includes the wide-ranging field of organ music. He was further aided by his astonishing powers of concentration. Imagine: his most complex musical tapestries were produced in a boarding school with a constant hullabaloo that must have mingled with the sounds of any sort of rehearsal. And in the cantor's living quarters there were always small children crying or demanding to be taken on to Papa's knee. And in the midst of it all, probably more abstracted than stoical, the musical Father-of-All! And when the quarrelling increased, he withdrew behind his own four walls, and wrote works dedicated entirely to his Creator and his art. As a result the keystone of western counterpoint, Die Kunst der Fuge, does not even indicate a possible scoring! As a performer Bach was first and foremost an organist. The "queen of instruments" perfectly met the requirements of his now habitual polyphony (usually in four parts). His performance on the organ bench was a direct physical experience, rather like a sensitive motorist today, whose entire body is aware of road and vehicle. To such an organist the pedals present not an added difficulty but a welcome support for the almost suspended torso with its four simultaneously moving extremities: it is the bass, after all, that provides the foundation.

Wolfgang Schmieder's Thematisch-systematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke Johann Sebastian Bach: Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (3rd edn., Leipzig, 1966) is our principal source for information. It is commonly known by the abbreviation BWV. A new catalogue of Bach's work, the Bach=Compendium (4 vols. to date, Leipzig: Peters, 1983-89) employs a categorical numbering system with additional numbers for individual works. It is currently in preparation by Christoph Wolff and Hans Joachim Schulze. Categories are represented by letters. Thus where E=masses, E 2 is the B-Minor Mass of 1733. The existing volumes of the Compendium cover the vocal music of Bach; we await the completion of the volumes covering instrumental music before adding this reference information to our files.

86. Johann Sebastian Bach's Achievement
Article examining the role the composer's works had in helping to reunite a Europe torn by postReformation conflict even as it became the standard upon which almost all subsequent Western music was based.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Achievement
The Integration of European Music in the Aftermath of the Wars of Religion
I. Two centuries of ideological warfare In this period of millennial perspectives it is appropriate that we study the 3 ideological cataclysms which, over the last 500 years, have shattered the European spiritual continuum:
  • The Catholic-Protestant polarization of western European Christianity . Christianity had frequently put forth divergent branches in previous centuries: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox , Coptic, Bogomil-Cathar, Hussite. among others. The persecution of heretics had a venerable history, nor were murderous conflicts over religious differences uncommon. All this history pales in comparison with the total devastation that overtook Europe through the continuous warfare unleashed by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation during the 16th and 17th centuries. Thus, the Thirty Years War reduced the population of the Lower Palatinate ( The Rhine Valley) by 90%; the state of Wurttemburg by 85%. Three-quarters of the inhabitants of Bohemia ( the modern day Czech Republic) perished .
  • Nationalism versus Feudalism
  • Capitalism versus Communism . Historically the most recent replay of Europe's inherent incapacity to achieve spiritual integrity , the capitalist/communist schism devastated the planet for 7 decades , gripping the consciousness of the mankind as with a band of steel.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) With Bach, the Baroque era went out with a bang. Though the seeds of classicism were very much sown during his lifetime, his sons being some of the prime shapers of that movement, J. S. Bach remained largely fixed in the Baroque traditions yet was able to fashion them as no-one else, either before him or since, into a towering peak of structural grace and formal perfection. It is this supreme craftmanship, largely unrecognised at the time, which has earned Bach an enormous stature in later years among composers and musicians. The Bach family: But while his sons were to help found the new school, it was the old school training from the father which sowed this seed. By all accounts, the Bachs became a nerve centre for all things musical in the area, with their extended family of relatives, friends and musicians both local and visiting. It may well be that some of the output from that time would not have survived if Anna Magdelena had not recorded many examples of smaller works in her two "notebook" collections of which the following four pieces are from the 2nd Notebook:

    ARNSTADT: 1703-1707
... LEIPZIG 3: 1744-1750 - The Introspective Years EISENACH: 1685-1695 Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21st l685, the son of Johann Ambrosius, court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach and director of the musicians of the town of Eisenach in Thuringia. For many years, members of the Bach family throughout Thuringia had held positions such as organists, town instrumentalists, or Cantors, and the family name enjoyed a wide reputation for musical talent. The family at Eisenach lived in a reasonably spacious home just above the town center, with rooms for apprentice musicians, and a large grain store. (The pleasant and informative "Bach Haus" Museum in Eisenach does not claim to be the original family home). Here young Johann Sebastian was taught by his father to play the violin and the harpsichord. He was also initiated into the art of organ playing by his famous uncle, Johann Christoph Bach, who was then organist at the Georgenkirche in Eisenach. Johann Sebastian was a very willing pupil and soon became extraordinarily proficient with these instruments. When he was eight years old he went to the old Latin Grammar School, where Martin Luther had once been a pupil; he was taught reading and writing, Latin grammar, and a great deal of scripture, both in Latin and German. The boys of the school formed the choir of the St. Georgenkirche, which gave Johann Sebastian an opportunity to sing in the regular services, as well as in the nearby villages. He was described as having 'an uncommonly fine treble voice'. The Lutheran spirit would have been strong in Eisenach, for it was in the Wartburg Castle standing high above the town, that Martin Luther, in hiding from his persecutors, translated the New Testament into German.

    Johann Sebastian Bach
THE COMPLETE CANTATAS When I first started this project about Bach's cantatas in 1995, I optimistically wrote the following: "This is the modest beginning of an effort to present the German texts (with English translations and commentaries) of all Bach's more than 200 cantatas in an internet-accessible form. Since this cannot be done in one day, I will try to add 20 cantatas per year (even that might be too ambitious a plan). Like everybody else, I dispose of limited resources and time, so, I need your help. Everybody with relevant knowledge is hereby invited to send me the necessary additions and corrections. Let's try together to keep accessible some of the most beautiful music ever written, for ourselves, but also for the generations to come. Amen." In the meantime, I received overwhelming help and offers from all over the world. I would like to thank all these kind Bach friends for their enthusiastic response. It has also become clear over the past few months, that, due to my other work and unexpected (but temporary) health problems, my original plan was too ambitious. I have all the German texts in html by now (thanks to the generous help of Imre Potharn, Szombathely, Hungary) and I will make those available as soon as possible. I will also continue to work on English glosses and to collaborate with my friends from Italy and elsewhere, in order to arrive at translations into languages other than English as well. Time permitting, I will also add an occasional commentary or article about the cantatas.
