http://www.who2.com/lucilleball.html
LUCILLE BALL Actor / Comedian For more than a decade Lucille Ball was American TV's most popular comedienne, known for her blazing red hair and slapstick situation comedy gags. She starred in five different TV shows during her career; the original, I Love Lucy (1951-57), became one of the great TV landmarks of the 1950s. The show was consistently #1 in the ratings, attracted guest stars like John Wayne and Orson Welles , and continued in reruns for decades. I Love Lucy also starred Ball's real-life husband, Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz; the couple had two children, Desi Jr. and Lucie, and formed a successful TV production company known as Desilu. (Ball and Arnaz were divorced in 1960, and Ball later married producer and TV personality Gary Morton.) Ball's last series, Life With Lucy , ran briefly in 1986.
Extra credit Vitameatavegamin , a fictional product hawked by Lucy's character in a 1952 episode of I Love Lucy , has become an oddly persistent piece of pop culture trivia... A 34-cent U.S. postage stamp honoring Ball was unveiled in August of 2001. The Lucille Ball File

Many of the links here are to pages on The Lucille Ball File L ucille Ball was born Lucille Desiree Ball on August 6, 1911. After a career in modeling, in which she was the Chesterfield Girl, Lucy came to Hollywood in 1933 as a Goldwyn Girl. She played bit parts in two Eddie Cantor musicals ( Roman Scandals and Kid Millions ) but quickly decided she didn't want to be a showgirl. So Lucy got out of her Goldwyn contract and became a contract player with Columbia. However, even after moving to RKO in 1935, Lucy's career didn't really start to take off until she appeared in RKO's big 1938 drama, Stage Door , co-starring Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers. She began getting featured (but not always better) roles in many RKO films. Her big break didn't really come until four years later, when she starred with Henry Fonda in The Big Street . MGM saw her and signed her up, ready to make her into their next musical-comedy star.
Lucy's MGM career looked rosy indeed when she was immediatley cast in a big, splashy Arthur Freed musical

For more than thirty years, lucille ball was one of the most recognizedand loved entertainers in the world. Known to all simply
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/ball_l.html
F or more than thirty years, Lucille Ball was one of the most recognized and loved entertainers in the world. Known to all simply as Lucy, she portrayed a scatterbrained housewife with the ability to turn simple chores into unparalleled fiascoes. Clumsy and unsophisticated at nearly everything she tried (and she tried nearly everything), the television Lucy won the hearts of average Americans across all social and cultural lines with her wacky schemes. Ironically, it was Ball's wide range of experience and talents that made her such a success in this role. Dropping out of high school at the age of fifteen, Ball moved to New York to study acting and found her first stage work as a chorus girl in 1927. She had her first break as a poster-girl for Chesterfield cigarettes and soon found herself in tinsel town as one of twelve slave-girls in the Eddie Cantor film, ROMAN SCANDALS (1933). By the mid-1930s, if you went to the movies (and in the 1930s everyone went to the movies) you would be certain to see Lucille Ball. Sometimes a nurse or a dancer, sometimes a flower clerk or a college girl, but always there. By the end of the decade she had been in forty-three films and was known as "Queen of the B Movies." Though universally recognized as a true talent and charismatic performer, Ball had yet to find the niche that would shoot her to super-stardom. From one film to the next her roles would change from the seriously dramatic to the light-hearted romantic lead. Dramas, Comedies, Musicals, she would and could do anything. But it wasn't until her part on the radio show "My Favorite Husband" that her true genius appeared. "My Favorite Husband" was a situation comedy about a housewife who was always getting into trouble. Over the airwaves, Ball's beauty and grace were invisible and what was left was that perfect comic timing and tone. With a pause, a stutter or a firmly asserted absurdity she could express all of the quirky awkwardness of physical comedians like Keaton, Chaplin, or the Marx Brothers, and the audiences ate it up.

The TV Star
Lucille Ball The first lady of comedy brought us laughter as well as emotional truth. No wonder everybody loved Lucy BY RICHARD ZOGLIN t happened somewhere between the clunky premier episode ( Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her ) and her first classic routine, the Vitameatavegamin commercial, in which Lucy gets steadily soused as she keeps downing spoonfuls of the alcohol-laced potion she's trying to hawk on TV. (Watch the spasm that jolts her face when she gets her first taste of the foul brew; it could serve as a textbook for comics well into the next millennium.) I Love Lucy debuted on CBS in October 1951, but at first it looked little different from other domestic comedies that were starting to make the move from radio to TV, like My Favorite Husband , the radio show Ball had co-starred in for three years. Lucy Ricardo was, in those early I Love Lucy episodes, just a generic daffy housewife. Ethel (Vivian Vance), her neighbor and landlady, was a stock busybody. Desi Arnaz, as bandleader Ricky Ricardo, hadn't yet become one of the finest straight men in TV history. William Frawley, as Fred Mertz, seemed a Hollywood has-been in search of work, which he was. Then magic struck. Guided by Ball's comic brilliance, the show developed the shape and depth of great comedy. Lucy's quirks and foiblesher craving to be in show biz, her crazy schemes that always backfired, the constant fights with the Mertzesbecame as particularized and familiar as the face across the dinner table. For four out of its six seasons (only six!)
