Goodbye, Carl Barks T his hasn't been the best of years for the elder statesmen of comics and animation.  Since January 2000, we've lost Charles M. Schultz and Gil Kane - to name just two of the giants we must now live without. And now, we learn that Carl Barks has passed away just shy of spending a century on earth. Disney fans have every reason to mourn. Barks was almost single-handedly responsible for the direction and style of the Donald Duck comic books from the mid 1940s until the late 1960s. Since then, his work has been reprinted multiple times in many languages, and he's found a worthy successor in current Disney comic artist Don Rosa. It's easy to overlook Barks' achievements for several reasons. Longevity allowed him to outlast much of his competition, but it also encouraged us to take him for granted. His anonymity (Disney did not allow any signatures other than the Disney trademark on Disney-created comic books) allowed him the freedom to create a wonderfully detailed world, yet also prevented many of us from giving him the credit he deserved. His work in what some call "funny animal books" guaranteed his stories a childlike innocence, but too many of us confused that with childishness. Carl Barks was worth far more than the entire stable of Image/Top Cow creators if we allow originality, story-telling ability, and audience size to be our criteria. If you ever enjoyed the TV series Ducktales , you are endebted to Carl Barks, as his comics were the major influence on that animated series.

Uncle Carl - His Life and Times Born in 1901 in Merrill, Oregon, Carl Barks has spent most of his life drawing, illustrating, painting and telling stories about ducks. Disney Ducks have always been his favorites. It all began in late 1918, when Barks left home to find a job for himself. After several heavy jobs varying from logger to working in a riveting gang, he finally got a job as cartoonist for a magazine called Calgary Eye-Opener . A few years later, in 1935, he heard the Disney Studio were looking for cartoonists, and that's when he decided to apply. Shortly after he was contracted, Barks submitted a gag about a mechanized barber chair. This gag meant a promotion to the story department where Barks finished the script for "Modern Inventions" (1937), in which the gag was used. During his years at the Disney studio, Barks worked as a storyboard artist, gag man and writer, and he helped 35 Donald Duck cartoons as well as the animated features "Fantasia" and "Bambi" to the theatres . Among the more famous cartoons of his you'll find "Donald's Nephews" (1938) "Hockey Champ" (1939) "Donald's Cousin Gus" (1939) and "The Plastics Inventor" (1944) In the early 1940s, Barks was tired of working in collaboration. In addition, the Studio was rapidly being converted into a war plant which produced lots of propaganda films for the military. Getting sick of the air conditioning each day was the final straw and on November 6, 1942, he decided to leave the Studio to set up a chicken farm.

He briefly subscribed to the Landon mail-order cartooning course, but the advent of WWI put an end to his formal art training. According to a press release by Gemstone , "Under the agreement with Disney, Gemstone will be allowed to develop new comics based on the entire stable of standard Disney characters, and will also have the rights to create collections of previously published material, including the recognized work of gifted Disney artists Daniel Branca, Daan Jippes, Don Rosa, Noel Van Horn, William Van Horn, and the great Carl Barks, as well as others. This also entitles Gemstone to continue reprinting the classic Barks Library editions, which contain Barks's world-renowned work with Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and the other beloved citizens of Duckburg." Carl Barks His Work and His Life The Year of the Sheep According to the Chinese moon calendar, the new year will begin on February 1, 2003, and this time it will be the Year of the Sheep ( ). In the Western tradition sheep are among other things associated with sleep. Counting sheep is supposedly a method to put you asleep even though it has never worked for me. And neither has it for Uncle Scroogle. One website says that " (t)hose born in the year of the sheep are thought to be a contented lot, happy with their creature comforts around them, wise and compassionate, especially gifted in the arts and reputedly tasteful." According to Chinese folklore, many centuries ago the Great Buddha invited all the animals of the world to join him in his celebration of the New Year. As the legend goes, only twelve animals made an appearance, including the Rat, the Ox (or Buffalo), the Tiger, the Rabbit (Hare, or Cat), the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep (or Goat), the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig (or Boar), and it was these twelve animals that came to represent the twelve signs of Chinese zodiac as a symbol of their loyalty to the Buddha.
