The Final Cut Album Reviews Saucerful Of Secrets (1968) Pink Floyd "Remember A Day" is the best song on the album that shows Pink Floyd's other original side/style. Rick Wright-dominated songs (all except three) are relaxing and can cary you to sleep sometimes. Wright was great at making a song more catchy (like Syd Barret) and shared ideas such as including saxaphones or jazz (DSOTM and beyond). "The Controls For The Sun" is spooky, but the lyrics are interesting and the sound effects (as always) from Pink Floyd are incredible. Wouldn't you think that the band members would be a bunch of freaks, sfter having heard all the songs? Do you think they consider the stuff normal at first (think about that)? Man, wthose are some pioneers. Yup! Some brave souls. They were brave even through-out their carerr. Back to it. I sure do love "Corporal Clegg". It reminds me of what a terrible, awful, unbeleivabley, traggic, loss that was for Barret to turn looney and then leave. Well, there wouldn't have been "Dark Side Of The Moon" or any album after "Saucerful Of Secrets". Poor man. Imagine DSOTM with the genious, Syd Barret. Never would of happened. But! Imagine the future Syd Barret w/ Pink Floyd. They were on the brink of being as big as DSOTM. Anyway, the hit, "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" became popular and was exploding becuase of singles like "See Emily Play". All this was in the U.K and was spreading into the U.S.

SYD BARRETT "Shine on you crazy diamond." Well, that's one way to put it. Another would be to say: "Jesus! That Syd Barrett's off his head." For you see, poor old Syd Barrett is mad. Well actually, there have been recent reports that Syd is back to decent mental health but for a while he was certifiably insane. I think it was a nervous breakdown or something but by the start of the seventies Syd had disappeared from the public eye completely following his instant success in the late sixties. Pink Floyd's first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (written almost entirely by Syd) received commercial and critical success and Syd was on the verge of becoming a star. Unfortunately far too much acid frazzled what was probably already a fragile mind and Syd left Pink Floyd following a series of insane incidents and over-bearing unprofessionalism. Somehow, though, he managed to record two full length solo albums over a couple of years before finally retreating to his reclusive life somewhere in Cambridge. There is something in that all too concise tale that carries with it enormous romanticism. He could have had it all but he was too mad. An abruptly tragic end to a whirlwind of brilliance. And thus I too became a follower of the Barrett legend, my all-time favourite mad rock star. I don't worship him or anything or particularly want to meet him (probably quite a scary experience) but I like him. Such a forlorn figure, left behind by the explosion of rock music in the late sixties. Therefore I have both his solo albums plus the outtakes album

The Terrapin... Official Publication of the Syd Barrett Appreciation Society Below are two links to take you to FTP directories for the Terrapin fan magazines from the late 1960's and early 1970's. The magazine, as you can read, had its own little "who's in charge" battle and had the usual submissions about Syd and submissions of lyrics to Syd Barrett songs. There are some mentions of Pink Floyd related things, but these are essentially Syd-specific magazines. In some cases the copies seem faint, like the originals, and as best possible we have enhanced them to allow for better print out and reading. Downloading Specifics: The files (in StuffIt! compression for Mac and ZipIt! for PC) are each a directory or folder of several graphic images which are each one unfolded page of the magazines. Each Terrapin was printed on (roughly) 81/2 x 11 pages and then center folded. To "reassemble" the magazines from these images, just print each file in the directory and copy onto both sides of your copy paper. For example, copy file "a" on one side, file "b" on the other...do the same with "c" and "d" and so on...this will give you the pages to then fold together (down the middle) and make your own Terrapin...I am working on some clearer instructions for this assembly as well as a better format for posting the magazines themselves. Suggestions?
