Baudelaire, Charles
Charles Baudelaire (1821-67) is above all celebrated as a poet and practitioner of double consciousness, incarnating two intertwined natures. As flowers and evil play against each other in his poetrythe naked and the adorned, the female and the male, the religious and the damnedin his life also he was occupied with a Venus Blanche and a Venus Noire. The way in which his theory and practice interpenetrate each other is itself characteristic of his approach. This Baudelairean imagination, as it works and plays itself out, is a mixture of the erotic and the standoffish, the idealistic and the cynical, the feminine and the masculine. The tension between two opposite poles informs Baudelaire's entire theory, as it does his writing.
One of his major contributions to the literature of theoretical poetics is at once a theory of ambivalent analogy and an analogous embodiment of that theory. It is his meditation upon the "thyrse," that strange stick with a vine wrapping around it, the symbol of medicine and of communication. The female ornament visibly twines around the male baton, as poetry around prose, and their love affair is itself the best example of a prose poem as a theory, erotically visualized. Seldom do we find in French literature an image so useful for all purposes and so memorable.
The theory, like the poem, aims for a flexibility that the image of the thyrse embodies: "Straight line and arabesque, intention and expression, will most rigorous, language most flexible, with a variety of means leading to one end, omnipotent and indivisible amalgam of genius," he addresses it, remarking that no one could separate its elements (

Biography
Charles-Pierre Baudelaire
Poet France Born 9 Apr 1821
Died 31 Aug 1867
Baudelaire was never again to be free from debt, or from schemes to restore his fortune by writing, publishing or lecturing. He suffered a stroke in Belgium in 1866, lingered on semi-paralysed and, latterly, mute and was brought back to Paris, where he died the following year. His collection of verse, 'Les Fleurs du Mal' (1857), was the subject of a prosecution for indecency; six poems were removed from it and were not reinstated in France until 1942. Further editions, with more poems, appeared in 1861 and 1868. His prose poems and writings on art and literature were collected after his death, and the literary criticism shows the influence of Edgar Allan Poe, whose short stories he also translated.
Baudelaire is known to have had attachments to three women, the longest-lasting to the creole Jeanne Duval. So far as we know he died childless.

Baudelaire, Charles Selected Poems from Les Fleurs du mal A Bilingual Edition . Translated by Norman R. Shapiro, and with Engravings by David Schorr. With a Foreword by Willis Barnstone. xxxviii, 210 p., 18 engravings. 1998 Cloth $24.95 0-226-03925-0 Spring 1998
Paper $19.00 0-226-03926-9 Fall 1999 In a masterly translation by Norman Shapiro, this selection of poems from Les Fleurs du mal demonstrates the magnificent range of Baudelaire's gift, from the exquisite quatrains to the formal challenges of his famous sonnets. The poems are presented in both French and English, complemented by the work of illustrator David Schorr. As much a pleasure to look at as it is to read, this volume invites newcomers and devotees alike to experience Baudelaire's genius anew. "A fine, formal translation of the best poems of France's founder of the symbolist movement." St. Louis Post-Dispatch "It's rare to find a rewarding translation of a masterwork, particularly a collection of groundbreaking poetry. . . . Through Shapiro's skillful wordsmithing, the reader can fully appreciate Baudelaire's control of the soul and the word which is the ancient and indefatigable ambition of all great poets. . . . Shapiro's interpretations set the standard for future English translations." Virginia Quarterly Review Table of Contents

BAUDELAIRE , Charles (1821-1867)
Fantin-Latour
Hódolat Delacroix-nak (1864) címû nagy kompozícióján egy embléma körül csoportosuló harcos írók és költõk körében ábrázolja Baudelaire-t. Csodálja Daumier-t, akinek rajzmûvészete valamiféle „abszolút összefüggést” rejt magába, hozzátéve, hogy „karikatúrái félelmetes gazdagságról” tanúskodnak: barátjánál, Constantin Guys-nél „az élet valódi fantasztikumát” találja; látnoki módon nyilatkozik
