Concorso Mario Bava "L'inventore dell'horror all'italiana" di Marco Castellini Nel 1915 a Sanremo nasce Mario Bava , il capostipite del cinema del terrore made in Italy. Figlio del pioniere del cinema muto Eugenio Bava, Mario comincia la sua carriera nel mondo del cinema come operatore e poi direttore della fotografia, dimostrando subito notevoli dote e grandi capacità realizzative. Le sue scenografie preparate per il film “ Il leone di Amalfi ” del 1950 attirarono perfino l’ammirazione dei più blasonati Studios Hollywoodiani Bava si avvicinò al genere horror grazie all’amico regista Riccardo Freda con il quale nel 1957 realizzo quello che è considerato il primo film dell’orrore italiano, “ I vampiri ”; la regia della pellicola è per lo più opera di Freda ma alcune sequenze furono girate dallo stesso Bava , che si occupò principalmente della fotograf ia e degli effetti speciali. Da segnalare l’ottima riuscita dell’effetto di invecchiamento del volto della donna-vampiro realizzato soprattutto mediante effetti di luce.

Toute la vie de Mario BAVA, né en 1914 à San Remo, sera marquée par l'Art. Il nait dans une famille d'artistes, son pére étant un sculpteur réputé. Mais celui-ci a plus d'une corde à son arc et il arrive que quelques producteurs ayant dépassé son budget fasse appel à lui pour "sauver les meubles ". La fonction de chef opérateur lui tombe ainsi du ciel mais ce sont surtout les trucages optiques qui passionnent Monsieur BAVA pére qui devient rapidement un as en la matiére et un professeur initiateur tout indiqué pour son fils Mario qui aide son pére tout en continuant ses études aux Beaux Arts. 1946 : la guerre a meurtri l'Italie et son architecture inspirant un nouveau courant cinématographique: le néo-réalisme italien dont Vittorio de SICA se fait vite la figure de proue. Dans ce contexte Mario BAVA devient le chef opérateur de quelques courts métrages et rapidement sa réputation de travail vite fait mais bien fait se répand et lui permet d'accéder au long métrage. Aussi rapidement les plus grands se l'arrachent: G W PABST pour "AFFAIRES DE FOUS", Dino RISI pour "IL VIALE DELLA SPERANZA" ainsi que MONICELLI, CAMERINI etc.... It has been said that Mario Bava did something new with Sei donne per l'assassino Blood and Black Lace Six Women for the Murderer Fashion House of Death , Italy, 1964) by renouncing a carefully constructed script in favour of a machine that produces effects such as violent death. This, however, leaves a fascinating movie stranded in a no man's land of formalism: images and colours generate new images and colours with no other purpose than that of creating a visually exciting work. This in itself is an achievement, but the film's interest lies elsewhere. Its formal aspects are not a simple exercise in style. The credits introduce to the spectators the various actors and actresses by presenting them on screen in the presence of dummies which, for reasons I shall explain presently, I prefer to call "models." However, there is a discernible difference between the representation of male and female. Whereas the actresses and female models closely resemble one another, the actors are distinguished from the models by being obviously human, as opposed to the dummies which are far more "abstract" in shape than those accompanying the actresses. Thus, the credit sequence closes the gap between humans and models in the case of women, while insisting on that gap in the case of men.

Douglas Sirk The plot, typical of this always narrative-challenged director, is just an excuse for a series of gorgeously fetishized set-pieces. It seems that Peter Kleist (Antonio Cantafora), the young descendant of Baron Otto von Kleist (a Vlad the Impaler style madman from 300 years ago), has finished his M.A. and come to Austria to look into his heritage. There he meets architecture student Eva Arnold (Elke Sommer), and the two of them decide to conjure up his ancestor. Happily, Peter brings along an ancient scroll telling him exactly how to resurrect this monster. Unhappily, the Baron indeed returns, wreaking havoc on the locals and trying to murder Peter and Eva, who unwittingly hold the secret to sending him back into the dustbin of history. Blood and Black Lace .) Of course, he looks especially good next to "Alfred Becker" (Joseph Cotten), a mysterious cripple who’s in fact — in a point the film telegraphs instantly — the Baron. Cotten’s presence adds marquee value, in spite of a pretty dreadful, disengaged performance. Sommer, with her vinyl micro-minis and Carnaby Street hats, is one of the least convincing architecture students in cinema history; she spends most of the film running and screaming, which she admittedly does well. The other actors are mostly disposable and forgettable.

He photographed several little known black-and-white movies, all in his beloved home country Italy. In the 1950s he went on to bigger things: LE FATICHE DI ERCOLE (English title: HERCULES), filmed in 1957, was to be Bava's first chance to show his unique feeling for cinema techniques. Officially credited as special effects supervisor and cinematographer, Bava was also said to have taken over the helm from the original director of the movie, Pietro Francisci. The film became a huge international hit and was the first of countless sword-and-sandal epics That same year Bava made his first horror film, together with long-time collaborator Riccardo Freda. In I VAMPIRI, Bava was again only listed as cinematographer, but sources revealed that he had also directed several scenes of the movie. Like LE FATICHE DI ERCOLE, the film was a starting point for a whole genre, the (Italian) gothic horror movie. Bava had to wait until the 1960s to direct his first feature film with receiving full credit.
