Astronaut-turned-artist Alan Bean still reaching for the moon
Web posted on: Friday, July 16, 1999 3:52:40 PM ATLANTA (CNN) Twelve men walked on the moon. Only one was an artist. Now Alan Bean is sharing his visions with the world. In his book, "Apollo: An Eyewitness Account by Astronaut/Explorer Artist/Moonwalker Alan Bean," the former Navy test pilot who became the fourth person to walk on the moon shows readers and art lovers his interpretations of his time spent on the moon. The book is a collection of Bean's original artwork, detailing the Apollo space program and the quest for the moon that culminated in six lunar landings from 1969 to 1972. He is famous for not only for becoming one of the best space artist of our time but also for the fact that he was one of the few people to ever get to land on the Moon. His works are unique and different from many space artists primarily due to the fact that he uses the very tools that he used on the moon as his brushes. Astronaut - Apollo and Skylab Missions: Alan Bean, Apollo 12 lunar module pilot, became the fourth man in history to set foot on the moon. As commander of Skylab mission II, he lived 59 days in space, 270 miles above planet Earth. Under his leadership, his crew accomplished 150% of their pre-mission goals - a record unsurpassed before or since. During his career, Alan helped establish 11 world records in aeronautics and space. He tailors each speech around the theme of the client's event and the goals the client wishes to emphasize. Says Bean, " I want to help the audience feel that they too can accomplish the challenges and dreams of their own lives and professions... That each of us can reach for our own stars... to understand that each of us can reach for our own stars... to understand that they are not light years distant but as close as our workplace, our home, and our family." After his perestentations, he will personalize 75 mini-prints of one of this paintings providing audience members the opportunity to talk with Captain Bean.

Bio Alan Bean was selected as an astronaut for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1963. During his 18-year NASA career, he achieved a number of accomplishments, including being the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 12 mission and commander of the Skylab Mission II. In 1963, Alan was selected as a NASA astronaut. He became the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 12 mission, and the fourth man to set foot on the moon.
In 1973, he again flew in space as spacecraft commander of the Skylab Mission II. This mission lasted fifty-nine days and traveled 24,400,000 miles. His crew accomplished 150 percent of their pre-mission goals, a record unequaled even today. Alan was then selected as backup spacecraft commander for the joint American-Russian Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975. Alan was assigned as Chief of Operations and Training and Acting Chief Astronaut until the first flight of the space shuttle. Throughout Alan's career as an astronaut when he was not in specific mission training, Alan studied art at nights and on the weekends. In 1981, he resigned as a NASA astronaut to devote full time to painting and speaking. Today, Alan is an accomplished artist creating paintings that artistically record for future generations humankind's first exploration of another world.

57. TxTell: Alan Bean, Moonwalker - Summary

http://txtell.lib.utexas.edu/stories/b0002-short.html
Alan Bean, Moonwalker On the Apollo 12 mission in November 1969, astronaut Alan Bean walked on the moon. Only a dozen human beings have ever accomplished that feat. Today Alan Bean's business card reads: "Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 12. The fourth human to set foot on the moon. Mission Commander of Skylab 3, our first space station. Spent 59 days in orbit 270 miles above the earth. Now an artist, creating paintings that record for future generations mankind's first exploration of another world." Alan Bean excelled as a Navy test pilot and had the Right Stuff to become an American astronaut. But he admits that in high school he wasn't a popular, well-motivated student or a talented athlete. He overslept and almost missed the NROTC entrance exam that would lead to an historical career. So what finally woke him up and put his life on the right professional track? The University of Texas. "At The University of Texas I found out that . . . if you put out effort you could change your results very quickly," Bean says. "When this dawned on me, I said, 'I don't want to be this person I've been all along.' When I did begin to put out effort I did really well. That was a big eye-opener. Then I began to put out more effort and do more, and maybe that's the story of my life." View the full story

58. TxTell: Alan Bean, Moonwalker

http://txtell.lib.utexas.edu/stories/b0002-full.html
Alan Bean, Moonwalker Alan Bean (BS in aerospace engineering, '55) has a unique distinction among University of Texas alumni: He is the only one, to our knowledge, who has his own action figure. This, of course, stems from a far loftier distinction, both figuratively and literally. Even astronauts have business cards, and his reads: "Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 12. The fourth human to set foot on the moon. Mission Commander of Skylab 3, our first space station. Spent 59 days in orbit 270 miles above the earth. Now an artist, creating paintings that record for future generations mankind's first exploration of another world." Though not quite the cornpone caricature created by Dave Foley, who starred as Bean in HBO's film series From the Earth to the Moon , Bean is without a doubt a native Texan. He speaks loudly and clearly; one can imagine this coming in handy as he tries to communicate with someone a quarter of a million miles away. Born in the Panhandle town of Wheeler, Texas, the son of two Michigan transplants, Bean moved around a lot as a kid, owing to a father who worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, but he spent his junior high and high school years in Fort Worth. His mother was a housewife and owned an ice cream store. He left in 1950 for The University of Texas, where he lived in Prather Hall the whole time and worked as a counselor from his sophomore year on because he got to stay there free.
