For Associated Student Body vice presidential candidate Alan Stuart Bean, ASB is not just a group he is involved with. It is part of his name. "I have been made fun of for my initials since I began as a senator," Bean said. "I guess it is destiny for me to be involved." Bean is the unopposed vice presidential candidate for the coming ASB elections. Though he has no opponent, he said he deserves the position. "I have as much, if not more, experience than anyone at Ole Miss. Since my freshman year, I have served as either a senator or in the cabinet. This has been two-and-a-half years of training for me, and now I am ready to serve the students as their elected vice president." From his early involvement to now, Bean has been senator and has served on two cabinets. Current ASB President Drew Snyder said Bean's experience makes him very capable to serve as vice president.

Alan Bean was the Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) on Apollo XII with Charles Conrad, Jr. Richard Gordon
This was his first space flight and he replaced C.C. Williams who was originally assigned to the flight but was tragically killed in an aircraft accident. Consequently, Bean was the fourth man to walk on the moon.
Later, Bean commanded the second Skylab
Today, he is one of very few accomplished space artists whose work is very highly sought after and includes several spectacular limited edition pieces counter-signed by as many as 24 astronauts from various programs.
Most recently, Bean has been touring the country promoting his new new book with text by Andy Chaikin entitled "Apollo: An Eyewitness Account." Be sure to check out these in-person pics with both he and Chaikin.

Alan Bean, 'Apollo 12' astronaut, to speak Sept. 30
A pollo 12 astronaut and artist Alan Bean, the fourth man to walk on the moon and the first painter to step foot on lunar soil, will give a lecture at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, in Mitchell Hall. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a signing of his book, Apollo: An Eyewitness Account. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended by calling 831-8242. As commander of Skylab Mission II , Bean and his crew lived 59 days in space and 270 miles above the Earth. During his career as an astronaut, he helped establish 11 world records in aeronautics and space. He also was awarded two NASA Distinguished Service Medals, two Navy Distinguished Service Medals, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the Yuri Gagarin Gold Medal and numerous other national and international honors. When Bean left the space program in 1981, he devoted himself to a new career as an artist, documenting the exploration of the moon with the authority of an eyewitness and the passion of a true believer. According to author Andrew Chaikin, "Alan Bean is painting Apollo's human adventure. His art is both visionary and historic." Five of Bean's paintings are included in the University Gallery/ Mineralogical Museum exhibition "One Small Step: Exploring America's Adventures in Space, 1959-1999," which continues at UD through Nov. 1. The exhibition and its related activities are designed to capture the imagination of gallery visitors and to increase understanding of the significance of space exploration, both in terms of its scientific and technological contexts, as well as its historical and cultural implications. (Please see story on page 7 about the current space exhibition.)

    http://www.speakers.ca/bean.html
As an astronaut and the fourth person to walk on the moon, Alan Bean is dedicated to inspiring people to be the best they can be, so their family can be the best it can be, and their company can be the best it can be. The Apollo program was an impossible dream come true. Sending humans from Planet Earth to explore the moon and return was a glamorous and newsworthy dream, but no more important than the dreams we all have in our hearts right now. With this conviction, Alan will take each person in the audience along with him as Lunar Module Pilot on the flight of Apollo 12 and along the way present some thoughts and ideas that will help each individual reach for their own professional and personal stars. By talking with, and listening to the client prior to an event, Alan custom tailors each speech around the theme of the client's event and the specific goals they wish to emphasize. Alan can focus on a broad variety of subjects from teamwork, high achievement, risk taking, goal setting, attitude control, achieving maximum potential, creative thinking, leadership, and effective followership, to showing how a company and an individual can find ways to accomplish their goals and dreams, and more. Captain Bean knows about reaching for the stars, organizationally and individually. In 1973, he was the Commander of Skylab Mission II (SL III), where he lived 59 days in space, orbiting 270 miles above our planet Earth. Under his leadership his crew accomplished 150% of their pre-mission goals a record unsurpassed before or since.

International Inc. news release Alan Bean is quoted as saying "I created this painting because I believe people now and in the future will want to know about the beginnings of the exploration of space. This painting is an artistic record of our heritage and our humanity." Painted on genuine aircraft board, (Bean's signature style) the original "The Lone Star" was completed with the covering of a texturing compound containing small particles of dust from the Apollo XII command module heat shield and pieces of a fragmented moon dust covered emblem which enhances the value of each limited edition. Each painting bears an original signature of Mr. Bean. Bean created the impressions illustrated in his work with the hammer that was used to secure the American flag into the lunar surface. His actual lunar boots were used to replicate footprints in the surface of the painting.
