Tony Becker Application Architect Before founding Fort Pedro, Tony worked as a programmer at J.G. Sullivan Interactive in Chicago, IL and as a developer in Northwestern University's Learning Technologies Group. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University. He has been programming since 1983. Interests Tony's broad interests in the field of information technology are:
  • Enabling people to do things that were previously impossible because they were unmanageably complex and therefore too difficult or expensive to accomplish. Exploiting the plummeting unit cost of digital information transmission and storage in ways that increase knowledge and freedom, rather than limiting it. The best example of this is his work with the Oyez Project, which exposes the inner workings of a public institution for scrutiny by students and scholars everywhere. Helping non-technical people, expert in another field, who think that new technologies might be able to help them accomplish their goals at a savings in cost, time or frustration. Reducing the amount of "monkey work" that the world's information workers must endure by increasing data reuse, designing systems to last, and building systems with reliability and security in mind.

Working as an investigative reporter for the Walford Gazette, she was a real tough cookie, ruthless in her goal to get a story. Cynical, ambitious and witty, Polly wasn't the kind of girl to lose sleep over lost friendships. However, there was one person she was interested in. Tony Hills caught her attention and taking him under her wing she helped him to get a job at the newspaper. According to Polly, Tony needed breaking in as far as sentiment was concerned. She kept drumming into him the fact that they were investigative reporters and not moral crusaders. Highly skilled in finding a story, she covered Michael Rose's suspension from his market job, a possible laundered money scam and Ian's very exciting residents meeting with little thought for any damage she was causing to the individuals in question. Polly was ecstatic when her biggest story hit the National tabloids. She reported the Kapoor family scandal.

You Cannot Go Home to Another Place: An Interview with Andries Botha by Carol Becker "Home", 1997. Wood, mild steel, aluminum, lead, electrical fittings, and astroturf, 3 x 3 x 4 m. Carol Becker: I think we should start from the recent Johannesburg Biennale, and go backwards. Why did you choose to do what you did at the Biennale? Andries Botha: The Biennale was a major cultural event-the first in the new post-apartheid South Africa. It was to measure the cultural climate of the country, and South African visual artists looked to the Biennale to address two or three decades of cultural and academic isolation. The director, Okwui Enwezor, came to South Africa with a certain authority, and he articulated a clear idea around race, identity, trade routes-a post-colonial unpacking which has subsequently enjoyed a lot of negative criticism. My personal opinion is that the Biennale needed to do two things: reveal South African creativity and bring global creativity to South Africa. South African politics is trying to present the country as a global player, to be taken seriously within the geopolitical/economic forum of the world. You cannot formulate a political persona without presenting to the world that it is also a cultural place that the world can deal with as an equal. The Johannesburg Biennale projects in the world imagination that South Africa is such a place. Having said that, you then have to look at the reality of South Africa as a place that is in fact not that.

'Frasier' Meets 'Becker'
NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2003
Kelsey Grammer (AP)
Ted Danson (CBS)
(CBS) Kelsey Grammer, Emmy award winning actor and Television Hall of Fame inductee, is best known for his role as the quirky radio psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane. It is a role he first created on the sitcom "Cheers" and continued on the current NBC hit comedy "Frasier."
But this Sunday, he stops by the CBS set of "Becker" to pay a visit to Ted Danson, an old friend from "Cheers" and the star of "Becker."
In an interview on The Early Show , Grammer says Danson is a good friend and the "Becker" star asked him to make an appearance on his show. It really is a return favor, he said, because Danson appeared on the second season of "Frasier."
Danson stars as Dr John Becker, an outspoken physician, who is extremely devoted to his medical practice in the Bronx, New York. But he sometimes finds himself in odd situations because of his strong opinions. In "Becker," Grammer plays a former college roommate who, after years of alcohol and drug abuse, attends an Alcohol Anonymous program and decides to reconnect with people he had wronged in the past. Becker happens to be pretty high on that list.

Up Against the Blue Wall
by Noel Weyrich By the end of that night, Becker would be in plenty of trouble. He would be sitting, bloodied and vomiting, in a police holding cell, aching from nine stitches in his forehead, and facing felony assault charges for allegedly fighting with police. The police report claims that Becker and a teenaged neighbor, Susan Bowers, had both assaulted a police officer responding to a "man with gun" report. The police claim that Becker and Bowers suffered their nearly identical head injuries accidentally while struggling with officers at the scene.
The blue wall of silence, Timoney suggests, is a fact of life
Becker, the ex-cop says, never hit anyone. Becker was nonetheless convicted twice of misdemeanor assault and sentenced to probation, although the felony charge against him was quickly dropped. Outside the wall: Tony Becker
On the night that Tony Becker got his head split open, Officer John Leca had already earned a reputation as a being a "rat" among certain police officers in the 26th District. Leca was in his patrol car sometime after 12:30 a.m. when the call went out about a white teenager reported with a gun in the vicinity of Huntingdon and Edgemont. The police radio logs confirm that Leca responded to the call and arrived at the scene. As he approached a knot of cops and teenagers near Douglas High School on Edgemont Street, he came face to face with a belligerent 200-pound young man whose first words to him were "Fuck you!" It was Tony Becker.
