COMPOSERS
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Born (baptized): December 17, 1770. Bonn, Germany
Died: March 26, 1827. Vienna, Austria
In his own words...

"I carry my thoughts about with me for a long time... before writing them down... once I have grasped a theme. I shall not forget it even years later. I change many things, discard others, and try again and again until I am satisfied; then, in my head... [the work] rises, it grows, I hear and see the image n front of me from every angle... and only the labor of writing it down remains... I turn my ideas into tones that resound, roar, and rage until at last they stand before me in the form of notes." German composer. Often considered a transitional figure from the Classical to the Romantic era.
Ludwig van Beethoven is often described by musicians as a "giant straddling two styles": the Classical and the Romantic. Indeed, it is a testimony to Beethoven's place in history that he is claimed for both periods. Whether Beethoven was a Classical or a Romantic composer, however, is beside the point. Instead, we might best view him as a new composer for a new age an age that is reflected in both musical as well as the nonmusical worlds.
Haydn
and Mozart lived during a time of nascent ideals of liberty and two major revolutions. They also lived in a world of royal patronage, in which Haydn flourished but Mozart floundered. In contrast, Beethoven came of age as an artist when the consequences of revolutions had to be confronted and when the burden of patronage had already shifted to the less reliable mechanisms of the commercial sphere: publications and concerts proceeds, supplemented by sporadic noble patronage. It was a far more disorderly world for Beethoven, yet one full of exciting potential.

Welcome to the Unheard Beethoven!
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, composer to ever live. Most people are familiar with a few of his works, if nothing more than the beginning of the Fifth Symphony, the Finale of the Ninth Symphony and the "Moonlight" Sonata. Beethoven of course wrote a great deal more than those well-known works; one catalog of his compositions runs to 849 separate items. While several hundred of these works have been recorded on one medium or another, there still remain literally hundreds of other works which have never been recorded at all, or which have never been published in widely available editions or in some cases, never published at all! There are thus hundreds of Beethoven works which, until now, have been available only to scholars and specialists. We at the Unheard Beethoven see that failure to make all of Beethoven's music readily available to the public as a great loss. This website endeavors to make right that wrong. Now YOU may judge for yourself as to whether these pieces deserve a wider hearing and the ability to join the repertoire. We have therefore now made available these never-before-heard works to anyone with a computer, a modem and a soundcard, in the form of MIDI files. Our rule of thumb has been that if a work has been recorded and is readily available, we will not produce a MIDI file, concentrating instead on the works which are not otherwise available. At present, over eleven hours of Beethoven's music is available on this website and in no other listenable format.

BIOGRAPHY
He was born in the German town of Bonn on the 16th of December 1770. His grandfather Ludwig and his father Johann were both musicians. Johann was to act as little Ludwig's first music teacher, but Ludwig soon changed to the court organist C. G. Neefe. Passing eleven years of age, Ludwig deputized for Neefe, and at twelve had his first music published. He then stayed as Neefe's assistant until 1787, when at seventeen, he took off for Vienna. Even though Vienna was to be his home for the rest of his life, this first visit was short. On hearing that his mother was dying, he quickly returned to Bonn. Five years later he finally moved to Vienna to live and work. After arriving in 1792 he studied composition and counterpoint under Haydn, Schenk, Salieri and Albrechtsberger. At the same time, he tried to establish himself as pianist and composer. His good relations with the towns aristocracy soon led to a secured income. In 1809, with the sole condition that he stayed in Vienna, Prince Kinsky, Prince Lobkowitz and Archduke Rudolp even guaranteed Beethoven a yearly income. But going back to the years around 1800, which is traditionally called the early period , he was still trying to master the high classical style. This strive culminated in the second symphony from 1801-1802.

The eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. Beethoven settled in Vienna in 1792, where he studied with Joseph Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 he realised he was losing his hearing and had to give up concert work. His deafness accentuated existing eccentricities in his character and gave him a reputation as a Menschenhasser, a "misanthropist", but he was nevertheless patiently tolerated by a number of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. His significance in music history was immense and he had a great influence on later generations of composers. MIDI FILE - Piano Sonata op.2 no.1: 1 Mov. MIDI FILE - Piano Sonata op.2 no.1: 2 Mov. Beethoven wrote only one opera, eventually called Fidelio after the name assumed by the heroine Leonora, who disguises herself as a boy and takes employment at the prison in which her husband has been unjustly incarcerated.

speech is nothing after all.

Ludwig van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 17, 1770 in Bonn, in the Rhineland of Germany. He lived in Vienna from 1792 until his death. Beethoven's Father and Grandfather were court musicians. Ludwig carried on the family tradition in exemplary form, becoming one of history's greatest composers. Beethoven's dynamic musical style infused his compositions with his confidence in human action. Again and again dissonance and turmoil are resolved with enthusiasm and rejoicing. Fate is trampled by triumphant music. Turbulence in his personal life, including his becoming incurably deaf at 29, tested his optimism. He surmounted his difficulties through a rigorous regime of composition. In his later career his music was even more free and imaginative. On his deathbed Beethoven was planning a tenth symphony, a composer to the very end. Despite his notoriously brusque manner, Beethoven was revered by Viennese society as its greatest celebrity. His funeral was attended by 20,000 friends and admirers. If you are aware of books, movies, databases, web sites or other information sources about
