All her plays are noted for their broad, bawdy humor. Despite her success as a playwright, however, her best literary achievement can be found in her novels. The most notable of these is Oroonoko (1688), a heroical love story, the first philosophical novel in English. Aphra Behn was famous for her life-style as well as her works; her denial of woman's subservience to man and her high-living, bohemian existence has led critics to describe her as the George Sand of the Restoration and a forerunner of the feminist movement. Her literary reputation declined rapidly in the 18th cent., but Montague Summers's collected edition of her work (6 vol., 1915) revived an interest in her. See biography by F. M. Link (1968).

22. Aphra Behn: Or, What Is Triumph In Love? A Consideration Based On The Aesthetic
Aesthetic realism consultant Nancy Huntting considers the life and work of 17th century English writer aphra behn.

What Is Triumph in Love? with a consideration of Aphra Behn By Nancy Huntting This article is based on a paper presented
in a public seminar at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation
in New York City, February 10, 2000
  • in the news More about love including in The Right of Aesthetic Realism to Be Known Home Page, Aesthetic Realism Foundation More about Aesthetic Realism Consultations

  • The Aesthetic Realism of Eli Siegel is tremendously kind in distinguishing clearly between two very different kinds of triumph people have in love — one which is false and makes us weaker and ashamed; the other, a true and lasting triumph, arising from the desire to like the world itself.
    Growing up in Ohio, I had a feeling of respectful wonder as my 4th grade class studied the brightest star in the constellation Orion, with the amazing name Betelgeuse, so many, inconceivable light years away. But I also wanted the feeling I got at home: that I was stellar, just because I was me — a Huntting, of superior New England stock, as we saw it. Without knowing it, I increasingly went after this spurious triumph of feeling I was better than others. As a result, at 13, despite praise from parents and teachers, when I began to think my best friend was more beautiful and smarter than I, I wrote to her that I was a failure — something I felt quite keenly. Years later in an Aesthetic Realism class, Eli Siegel kindly asked me a question that made the cause clear to me: "Have you wanted to be superior to every woman you met?" Yes, I had. That basis for "self-esteem" was fake, and I couldn't fool myself. I punished myself with a feeling of inferiority, and was ill-at-ease with anyone outside my family and close friends.

    APHRA BEHN This article was originally published in Encyclopedia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, Volume III . Anonymous. Cambridge: University Press, 1910. p. 657. BEHN, APHRA (otherwise AFRA, APHARA or AYFARA) (1640-1689), British dramatist and novelist, was baptized at Wye, Kent, in 1640. Her father, John Johnson, was a barber. While still a child she was taken out to Surinam, then an English possession, from which she returned to England in 1658, when it was handed over to the Dutch. In Surinam Aphra learned the history, and acquired personal knowledge of the African prince Oroonoko and his beloved Imoinda, whose adventures she has related in her novel, Oroonoko . On her return she married Mr. Behn, a London merchant of Dutch extraction. The wit and abilities of Mrs. Behn brought her into high estimation at court, andher husband having died by this timeCharles II employed her on secret service in the Netherlands during the Dutch war. At Antwerp she successfully accomplished the objects of her mission; and in the latter end of 1666 she wormed out of one Van der Aalbert the design formed by De Ruyter, in conjunction with the DeWitts, of sailing up the Thames and burning the English ships in their harbours. This she communicated to the English court, but although the event proved her intelligence to have been well founded, it was at the time disregarded. Disgusted with political service, she returned to England, and from this period she appears to have supported herself by her writings. Among her numerous plays are

    Aphra Behn
    Aphra Johnson;
    AKA: Incomparable Astrea;
    British spy in Antwerp
    Little is known about the early life of England's first professional writer, Aphra Behn , who would later be called the Incomparable Astrea and became one of England's first female spies. It is believed by some that Aphra Behn was born near Canterbury and that her real name was Aphra Johnson . Her father may have been related to Lord Francis Willoughby , governor of Surinam, a British territory in South America, and from whom he received a business appointment in that colony. The family traveled to Surinam in 1663, but Aphra's father died of illness during the voyage. The family remained in that exotic land for six months before returning to England.
    Before leaving Surinam, Aphra carried on a torrid affair with William Scot whose father had conspired to send Charles I to the executioner's block and was himself later executed. Aphra and William Scot were enamored of the popular novel L'Astree by Honore de Urfe and referred to each other by the names of the protagonists, Aphra being Astrea and Scot being Celedon . The two would later employ these names again, not as lovers but as code names for their spying activities.
