Sample Selection At eighteen, and in college, architecture for me could not be just an aesthetic pursuit, nor an economic or social one. Architecture had to be a moral pursuit, a search for goodness in beauty and beauty in goodness, with truth the royal road. The glory and comfort of buildings had to be One Thing, fine beyond measure, and everlasting. And so, with me, it remains. I knew about Raoul Wallenberg only in the most cursory way before preparing for this lecture. World War II hero, savior and shelterer of Jews, a gentile who lost - or perhaps gave - his lift in the effort. This much I knew. My surprise at learning that Wallenberg was also an architect, and that he had studied at the University of Michigan, cannot be exaggerated. The question that occurred to me as supremely worth exploring was this: Given what Wallenberg did in German-occupied Hungary fifty-six years ago, and how he did it, does it matter now did it matter then - that he was trained as an architect?

MICHAEL BENEDIKT
THERMOPYLAE is delighted to present the witty, subversive, alternative-culture friendly erotic poetry of Michael Benedikt, a widely-anthologized and critically acclaimed author of poems in both verse and prose. Benedikt's revolutionary work first exploded onto the poetry scene in the 1960s. I first encountered his poetry during junior high school, in the anthology The Contemporary American Poets: American Poetry since 1940 , editor, Mark Strand (Mentor Books, 1969). I was so impressed with his poem, Litanies that I scrawled a big star beside it some thirty years ago. Needless to say, I was bowled over when Mr. Benedikt emailed recently to query about contributing poems to Thermopylae Benedikt's verse will appeal to all visitors to this site, including those of you who generally find contemporary poetry to be out of touch with real life. Benedikt's work speaks directly and plainly about issues few poets have the nerve to address. His artistic courage has made it difficult for himparticularly with his recent workto find public forums courageous enough to allow the free dissemination of controversial ideas. (He reports that he hasn't seen fit to send out a book-length poetry manuscript for circa 15 years.) THERMOPYLAE is honored to support his work.

As regular readers may know, I've been doing interviews with writers and artists for several years, and primarily under the aegis of ELF: Eclectic Literary Forum magazine. In 1998, I proposed to ELF that my next project for them be a series of mini-interviews with a few dozen writers. The interviews would solicit their thoughts on literature at the end of the 20th Century. I would ask all interviewees the same three questions. The series would appear in consecutive issues of ELF right into the year 2000. The proposal coincided with a trip I was making in July to University of the South (Sewanee), as ELF's good-will representative at Sewanee's annual writers' conference. There were several people on faculty who were ideal for the series. With the permission of Wyatt Prunty, the founder/director of the conference, I began work on the first set of mini-interviews.
That fall ELF unexpectedly closed its doors when publisher and co-founder, Sue Neubauer, became ill. C.K. Erbes, editor and co-founder, could not go on without Sue, who was half the spirit and energy of

Iowa City, 1973 Harry and I were have a good time as usual in the
'Hunter House' bar the other daywe were rasing our
glasses in song, and over-tipping the waiterswhen sud-
denly Harry mentioned an affair that he had had with a
'nymphomaniac girl friend.'Being a man of the world,
and therefore conditioned by the time, I immediately start-
ed in thinking: let's see now, Harry has a wife and three
children... The first girl is 8, the second is 6, and the boy
is 4...but he's been married to Melissa for 5 years...of course somewhere in there they were separated for 6 months... He mentioned that he first began to see the nymphomaniac lady 10 years ago but tired quickly of what he called 'a girl like that,' and therefore 'broke up with her 4 or 5 years ago.' Hmmmm. Somewhere in there is a calculation that might be made, and a judgment I ought to deliverand maybe there's some action that ought to be taken: for example, I could

Michael Benedikt on Cyberspace
Michael Benedikt has described Cyberspace as “a new universe, a parallel universe created and sustained by the world’s computers and communication lines.” It is a place, according to him “entered equally from a basement in Vancouver, a boat in Port-au-Prince, a cab in New York, a garage in Texas City, an apartment in Rome, an office in Hong Kong, a bar in Kyoto, a café in Kinshasa, a laboratory on the Moon,” or from the bedroom of a child.

Mediated personae
March 13, 2003 @ 13:00 in: Research William Gibson posts some thoughts to his blog, about the scope of being able to create a mediated persona. Even in the type-and-run medium of the blog, he has a way with words. So, to keep this on file, here's the quote: While I'm on the topic of mediated personae, something that came up during that CBC taping, last night (for me, anyway) was the idea that blogging (or even posting to fora) represents the democratization of the mediated persona. Literally anyone can have one, now, or several. I am an exception to this, because I have mine via the printed word, the oldest mass medium on the planet, and this website is maintained by a publishing company that belongs to an even larger corporation owned in turn by shapeshifting reptiles from Beta Reticuli, but the rest of you, today, are free to mass-mediate your own personae. Which was formerly, hugely, not the case. Choose a handle, post: you're mediating a persona. In another post Gibson says that he hasn't reread any of his novels in full since they were published, so I wonder what he would make of this (expanded) footnote I have in
