Jack Benny
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Benjamin Kubelsky February 14 December 26 ), better known as Jack Benny was a comedian radio performer, and early television star. Benny is best known for The Jack Benny Program, on radio 1932-1959, and also on television in the late 1950s through the early 1960s. Today he is thought of as the premier comedian of old-time radio Jack Benny He was born in Waukegan, Illinois His programs featured a fictionalized version of Benny's life with many running gags, particularly jokes about Benny's cheapness. One of the most famous silences in radio came when Benny was accosted by a robber who demanded, "Your money or your life." After an extended pause, Benny replied, "I'm thinking it over." When Benny moved to television, he revealed that his verbal talent was matched by his assortment of facial expressions.

Jack Benny
By Tinky "Dakota" Weisblat Jack Benny was among the most beloved American entertainers of the 20th century. He brought a relationship-oriented, humorously vain persona honed in vaudeville, radio, and film to television in 1950, starring in his own television series from that year until 1965. The comedian grew up in Waukegan and went on the vaudeville stage in his early teens playing the violin. The instrument quickly turned into a mere prop, and his lack of musicianship became one of the staples of his act. Benny's first major success was on the radio. He starred in a regular radio program from 1932 to 1955, establishing the format and personality he would transfer almost intact to television. Most of his films capitalized on his radio fame (e.g., The Big Broadcast of 1937 ), although a couple of pictures, Charley's Aunt (1941) and To Be or Not to Be (1942) showed that he could play more than one character.

The Jack Benny Program
Left to Right- Rochester, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Mary Livingstone, Jack Benny, Don Wilson, Mel Blanc
While it is difficult to summarize almost 25 years of broadcasting into one measly web page, I shall try just the same. Here is a basic description of the main characters:
Character Traits
Jack Benny Jack Benny Stingy, self-absorbed, balding, constant age of 39 Mary Livingstone Sadye Marks (Jack's wife) Jack's alter ego, funny, quirky, beautiful woman Dennis Day Dennis Day Childish Irish tenor, naive, almost annoyingly immature Rochester Van Jones Eddie Anderson Jack's black, often lazy, butler, witty, coarse voice Phil Harris Phil Harris Girl crazy booze hound, leader of a drunken band, self-absorbed Don Wilson Don Wilson Pudgy announcer, not concerned with appearance Maxwell (Jack's Car)/Jack's French violin teacher/Mexican Mel Blanc old, makes a lot of noise/fed up with Jack/"Si/Say" routine, etc. Jack and Mel- The basic plot line revolved around the mishaps and adventures of the basic cast, along the way revolutionizing the art of "character degradation," much to the dismay of the shrewd, balding Jack Benny. Jack was like the Jerry Seinfeld of radio, in the fact that the characters around him got most of the laughs, mainly at his expense. In my opinion, I think that bandleader Phil Harris was the funniest of the group. The way he was portrayed as an alcoholic, self-centered, and vain man really contrasts to the others and makes him stand out in a special way. "Hellllooo Libby," to me, will always be his trademark, as well as the way he called Jack "Jackson" when no one else did.

Jack Benny Show
After 23 years on the radio, Jack Benny brought his show to television! Jack
would get himself and his friends into every kind of bad situation you can
imagine. The program regularly had other popular "stars" of the era as
guest stars. Some of the things that the character played by Jack Benny
on the tv show is best known for are his terrible Violin playing, his never
getting older than 39 years old and his "penny pinching" demeanor.
