Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
INSCRIBED TO MARK VAN DOREN BERRYMAN, John. Stephen Crane. New York: William Sloane Associates, 1950. 8vo., pp. xv, 347; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and cover, with spine slightly faded, minor bumps to head and tail; dust-jacket clean and neat, with only the suggestion of rubbing, creasing at extremities. A fine copy, lengthily inscribed on the front endpaper to Mark and Dorothy Van Doren. First edition. The inscription reads:
Having attempted suicide only the year before, the John Berryman who arrived at Columbia University in 1932 was a deeply unhappy youth. Happily it was here that he met Mark Van Doren, under whose mentorship he flourished, publishing his first poems and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in English.
Van Doren also allowed Berryman (after an initial failure) to re-sit the scholarship exam that permitted him to travel to England. These two years at Cambridge - during which time he met Yeats, Eliot, Auden, and Dylan Thomas, wrote plays, won the Oldham Shakespeare prize, and published poems in Southern Review - were the making of Berryman as a scholar and a poet. Indeed, throughout his life Berryman would cite Van Doren as the person most responsible for his poetic vocation.
One wonders at the auto-critical comments in the inscription. Perhaps Berryman was conscious of Van Doren's response when, some years before, the young poet announced his intention to write a biography of Shakespeare: 'Scholarship is for those with shovels,' Van Doren responded, 'whereas you're a man of the pen, the wind, the flying horse, the shining angel, glittering fiend - anything but the manure where scholars have buried the masterpieces of the world.'

    Berryman, John 1914-72, American poet and critic, b. McAlester, Okla., grad. Columbia, 1936. From 1955 until his death he was on the faculty of the Univ. of Minnesota. Although he had published several volumes of poetry and a highly regarded biography of Stephen Crane (1950), his literary reputation was not established until the appearance of Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956), a long dialogue in verse between Berryman and the ghost of Anne Bradstreet . The volumes 77 Dream Songs (1964; Pulitzer Prize) and His Toy, His Dream, His Rest (1968) can be considered a two-part novel in verse in which the only speaker is a middle-aged teacher and lover named Henry, who is the universal voice of an anguished and trivial age. Berryman committed suicide in 1972. Delusions (1972), a volume of poems, and Recovery Poems The Dispossessed Berryman's Sonnets (1967), and Love and Fame See study by J. M. Linebarger (1974).

    John Berryman's Life and Career Joel Athey B ERRYMAN was born John Allyn Smith, Jr., in McAlester, Oklahoma, the son of John Allyn Smith, a banker, and Martha Little, formerly a schoolteacher. The family moved frequently, finally settling in Tampa, Florida, where his father speculated in land, failed, and in 1926 committed suicide. Three months later his mother married John McAlpin Berryman, whose name was given to the son. The new family moved to New York City, but hard times followed the 1929 stock market crash; young John attempted suicide in 1931. The next year he enrolled at Columbia College (later Columbia University), where he flourished under mentor Mark Van Doren, published poems in Columbia Review and The Nation (1935), and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in English. He studied two years at Cambridge University in England, meeting W B. Yeats, T S. Eliot, W H. Auden, and Dylan Thomas. He tried playwriting, won the Oldham Shakespeare prize, and published poems in Southern Review In 1939 Berryman taught at Wayne University (later Wayne State University) in Detroit and served as poetry editor of The Nation.

    Random Notes on John Berryman and The Dream Songs
    John Berryman was tortured by his alcoholism, subject to fits of depression, and haunted by nightmares and the ghost of his father, who committed suicide when Berryman was a child. Suicide is the official story, but in his biography, Dream Song: The Life of John Berryman , Paul Mariani hints that Berryman's father may have been murdered. Berryman's mother had separated from his father, and she had a new paramour. Berryman's mother told him and his brother that his father had gone away forever, and the vague ambiguities that surrounded his father's death served to heighten the sense of terrible mystery for Berryman. Berryman kept a journal of his dream life, and his analysis not only of his dreams but of the language in which he recorded the dreams holds the origin of The Dream Songs . Paul Mariani writes: On August 12 [1955], [Berryman] . . . began a draft of an entirely new sort of poem for him, in large part the result of the 650 pages of dream analyses he'd compiled over the past nine months. The poem began with three lines of something he'd written in 1947, which he now extended to form another sonnetlike poem in three 6-line rhyming stanzas. The poem was a blend of Christian allegory, punning, baby talk, and dreamlike slips of the tongue, and contained a suppressed wish to regress to childlike innocence, where such language seemed most natural:

    We Poets in our youth begin in gladness;
    But thereof come in the end despondency and madness.
    From a poem by Wordsworth, "Resolution and Independence"
    Source of the title of Eileen Simpson's book Poets In Their Youth 61 of 77 Dream Songs by John Berryman (1964): Full moon. Our Narragansett gales subside
    and the land is celebrating men of war
    more or less, less or more.
    our targets rest. In us we trust. Far, near,
    the bivouacs of fear are solemn in the moon somewhere tonight,
    in turning time. It's late for gratitude, an annual, rude their ordered markers undulate away awaiting no day. Away from us, from Henry's feel or fail, campaigners lie with mouldered toes, disarmed, out of order, with whom we will one. The war is real, and a sullen glory pauses over them harmed, incident to murder. Home Subscribe Comment Link To March 25, 2003
