A Recollection
John Peale Bishop
Famously she descended, her red hair
Unbound and bronzed by sea-reflections, caught
Crinkled with sea-pearls. The fine slender taut
Knees that let down her feet upon the air,
Young breasts, slim flanks and golden quarries were
Odder than when the young distraught
Unknown Venetian, painting her portrait, thought
He'd not imagined what he painted there.
And I too commerced with that golden cloud: Lipped her delicious hands and had my ease Faring fantastically, perversely proud. All loveliness demands our courtesies. Since she was dead I praised her as I could Silently, among the Barberini bees.

Edmund Wilson '16, one of America's best minds, suffers from a posthumous PR problem Edmund Wilson ['16]: A Biography
Jeffrey Meyers
Houghton Mifflin, $35
On lists of eminent literary Princetonians of the 20th century, three names tend to crop up together: F. Scott Fitzgerald '17, John Peale Bishop '17, and Edmund Wilson '16. Fitzgerald, whose college friends and literary rivals considered him a callow lightweight, flunked out during his junior year yet, 80 years later, we all know who he is. Bishop, by contrast, served as chairman of the Nassau Lit. Among his undergraduate contemporaries, he seemed most likely to succeed as a literary lion. But an increasingly overwrought and antiquated poetic style combined with the alcoholism that characterized many other writers who came of age in the 1920s (including Fitzgerald and Wilson) proved Bishop's undoing.
What became of Wilson? On the Princeton campus today and among literate Americans in general he is almost as unknown as Bishop. And yet, from around 1930 until his death, in 1972, he was a literary superstar. His name carried the same bookish weight and prestige that names like John Updike, Susan Sontag, and Salman Rushdie do today. Gore Vidal called Wilson "America's best mind." Encyclopedias routinely describe him as "the foremost American social and literary critic of the 20th century." John Kennedy awarded Wilson the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963. Clearly, Edmund Wilson suffers from a posthumous PR problem. Jeffrey Meyers, in the first complete Wilson biography written, sets out to rehang his subject's fallen star.

The Metamorphoses of M
I have seen your feet gilded by morning
Naked under your long gown, I have seen them
Keep such state upon the unswept floor
I could have sworn Venetian artisans
Had all night been awake, painting in gold,
To set your beauty on appropriate heels.
What wonder then that I insist on gilt As covering for your feet, which might inlay (If there were still such metamorphoses) The morning and form a constellation To take all eyes from Venus, though she stood As from antiquity in naked light Till then unvying queen. II Your beauty is not used. Though you have lain A thousand nights upon my bed, you rise Always so splendidly renewed that I have thought, Seeing the sweet continence of your breast, Mole-spotted, your small waist, and long slim thigh, That even the unicorn that savage beast If he should startle on you fresh from light Would be so marvelled by virginity That he would come, trotting and mild To lay his head upon your fragrant lap And be surprised.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
John Carroll was born on January 8, 1735, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the son of Daniel and Eleanor (Darnall) Carroll. Carroll came from a prominent colonial family; his father was a successful Maryland merchant, and his mother, a highly educated woman, was an heiress in one of Maryland's richest families. From 1746 to 1748, Carroll attended Bohemia Manor, a Jesuit academy in northern Maryland. In July of 1748, he went to St. Omer College in French Flanders, a school run by English Jesuits. In 1753, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Watten, Flanders, and took his first religious vows in 1755. Also at Watten, from 1756 to 1757, Carroll studied literature. At the Jesuit college in Liege, between 1757 and 1760, Carroll studied philosophy. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1769 and took his final vows as a Jesuit in 1771.
JOHN CARROLL'S MOTHER
This portrait of Eleanor Darnell Carroll (1703/4-1796) was painted by John Wollaston.

Christianity must Change or Die, bishop john Spong writes in the company of bishopSpong and of Positive Thinking , Norman Vincent peale presents Christianity
http://www.angelfire.com/ut/stpaulunitedchurch/sermonarchive/sermonarchive48.htm
Nov 26, 2000
In his book, Why Christianity must Change or Die, Bishop John Spong writes that he has always wanted to be a person of prayer. He says that he has yearned to have that sense of immediate contact with the divine. For Bishop Spong it was the reworking of his image of God that finally brought solace and meaning to his prayer life. Canadian, religious writer Tom Harper also writes of his struggles with prayer. He blames his struggles on his personality. He writes that most prayer books are written by people who are internally focused or introverted, they get energy from time alone in silence and contemplation, while most people who buy these books on prayer are externally focused or extroverted. They get their energy from interacting with people. Traditional Christian prayer is internally-focused. Monks, nuns, priests and ascetics traditionally have retreated from the world for prayer and contemplation. They have become the role models for the rest of us who live in the world. And for those of us who are extroverted, this style of prayer is challenging. And so I feel that I am in good company, in the company of Bishop Spong and Tom Harper and yes, even the disciples, those who were Jesus' best friends, when they ask, "Lord, teach us to pray."
