Stanford Report, October 25, 2000 'Celebration' This poem, "Celebration," is from Denise Levertov's last and posthumous volume, This Great Unknowing: Last Poems (New Directions, 1999). Levertov, who died in 1997, taught at Stanford from 1982 to 1993. English Professor Eavan Boland read the poem at the inauguration of John L. Hennessy on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000. President Hennessy, this poem was written by Denise Levertov, who was professor of English at Stanford and a member of the Creative Writing Program from 1982 to 1993 and a peerless poet. The poem is called "Celebration." And because it marks out a single day for praise and rejoicing, I thought it was appropriate as part of our congratulations to you on this special day for you and for Stanford. Celebration Brilliant, this day a young virtuoso of a day. Morning shadow cut by sharpest scissors

audio-visual materials A B C D ... Z Of all the literary arts, poetry is undoubtedly the one most suited to the spoken word, often in fact written for "the stage" as much as for "the page". Always popular, but hard to find in the past, the recording of poetry is now experiencing something of a boom. The Poetry Library is unique in having a wide range of poetry on cassette, record, video and CD, all of which can be listen to and viewed at special audio booths, and many of which can be borrowed by members. Much of the material is international, and includes an impressively large range of American poetry not available elsewhere in the U.K. Poetry on vinyl has become very rare and many of the Library's records are now collectors' items. Poetry on video is rare, but nonetheless we have built up a collection of over 200 titles. They include many television programmes donated to us by their producers, such as The South Bank Show, Words on Film, Poetry in Motion, Up and Coming and several programmes by Tony Harrison produced by Peter Symes of BBC 2. Together they are responsible for groundbreaking work with poetry and television. More pioneering work in this area was initiated by the Royal Festival Hall's

Eavan Boland
Eavan Boland was born in Dublin in 1944. At the age of six, she and her family moved to London, where Boland had her first experiences of anti-Irish sentiment. Her dealing with this hostility strengthened Boland's identification with her Irish heritage. She spoke of this time in her poem "An Irish Childhood in England: 1951." She later returned to Dublin to attend school and published a pamphlet of poetry (23 Poems) after her graduation. Boland received her BA (Bachelor of Arts Degree) from Trinity College, Dublin in 1966. Since then she has held numerous teaching positions and published poetry, books and journal articles. Boland married in 1969 and has two children. Her experiences as a wife and mother have influenced her to write about the beauty and importance of the common.

eavan boland Wednesday, April 26, 7:45 pm "Boland has emerged as one of the best poets in Ireland." Denis Donoghue, The New York Review of Books Universally acknowledged as the preeminent female poet of her native Ireland, Eavan Boland was born in Dublin in 1944 and has published nine volumes of poetry. She made her American debut with Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990, followed by In a Time of Violence , which explored what she called "the history of silences: the unspoken, the unwritten, the forgotten names, invisible chronicles." More recently, The Lost Land (1998) explores a series of metaphors for life's moments of transition and transformation, as well as, literally, the Ireland she has left behind. But the painful transitions are necessary, as a poem to her daughter, "The Blossom," suggests: Then holds out a dawn-soaked hand to me
whose fingers I counted at birth years ago.

"Unless, of course, you improvise," Eavan Boland muses in the closing lines of the opening poem of her previous extensive compilation, Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990 Interestingly, her early poems collected in An Origin Like Water New Territory in 1967 and The War Horse The Journey , Boland began to emerge as a significant Irish voice on the international poetry scene, she had made a decided commitment to truly liberating vers libre Outside History and continuing with In a Time of Violence Apparently, Boland herself came to recognize the stylistic and thematic limitations of her early work as she begins her 1982 volume, In Her Own Image An Origin Like Water I will wake you from your sluttish sleep.

The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. in the Smith Building's Kilpatrick Auditorium on the Centenary campus. Sponsored by the Student Government Association and the English Department, the event is free and open to the public. Boland is by critical consensus the "first major woman poet in the Irish poetic tradition." Her work, which includes non-fiction prose as well as verse, examines the relationship between public discourse and private memory and personal experience. She is the author of nine volumes of poetry, the most recent being Against Love Poetry , which was acclaimed by The New York Times as one of the "notable books" of 2001.
