The DIA Arts Foundation, way west on 22nd Street in New York's new Chelsea arts hub, hosted Eavan Boland and Adrienne Rich, Friday evening, May 9 at 7:30 pm. The readings are held in a large pure white gallery space. Many tech guys with walkie-talkies, elegant keepsake programs with poem broadsides tipped in (designed by Sherrie Levine), and brilliant intros by Series Coordinator Brighde Mullins. The space seats 250 all sold ($5) by 7:15. Eavan Boland is the model for poet in the next millennium. The first Irish woman poet to surface, she flips the classic/romantic mode that has been poetry's underlying conceit woman as object/subject to woman as Maker. Her poems rip the words from the text of history to reveal the face of the faceless seethe of human beings on whose bodies power has built roads to nowhere. The shaman resides in the body of a woman, a mother, a wife, a teacher only insofar as to redefine the role of the spiritual for a new culture: eyes open to the trickery of the tongue which lashes away in the language of the oppressor. In her strong beauty we hear of:

The Colonists
By Eavan Boland
Posted Thursday, March 25, 1999, at 12:30 AM PT
To hear Eavan Boland read "The Colonists," click here I am ready to go home through an autumn evening. Suddenly, without any warning, I can see them. They form slowly out of the twilight. Their faces. Arms. Greatcoats. And tears. They are holding maps. But the pages are made of failing daylight. Their tears, made of dusk, fall across the names. Although they know by heart every inch and twist of the river which runs through this town, and their houses every aspect of the light their windows found they cannot find where they come from: The river is still there. But not their town. The light is there. But not their moment in it. Nor their memories. Nor the signs of life they made. Then they faded. And the truth is I never saw them. If I had I would have driven home through an ordinary evening, knowing

Daughter
By Eavan Boland
Posted Thursday, July 23, 1998, at 12:30 AM PT
To hear the poet read "Daughter," click here i. The Season
The edge of spring.
The dark is wet. Already stars are tugging at their fibrous roots: In February they will fall and shine from the roadsides in their yellow hundreds. My first child was conceived in this season. If I wanted a child now I could not have one. Except through memory. Which is the ghost of the body. Or myth. Which is the ghost of meaning. ii. The Loss All morning the sound of chain-saws. My poplar tree has been cut down. In dark spring dawns when I could hardly raise my head from the pillow its sap rose thirty feet into the air. Into daylight. Into the last of starlight. I go out to the garden to touch the hurt wood spirits. The injured summers. Out of one of them a child runs. Her skin printed with leaf-shadow. And will not look at me.

At the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library
Welcome to C.W. Post Library 's rare book holdings of "Irish Contemporary Poets." We are indebted to the generosity of the late Winthrop Palmer who has made this possible. Mrs. Palmer most especially desired the Library to develop its collection in the areas of poetry, and Irish and French literatures. The Special Collections Department of the Library has adhered to this initial focus. This catalog is concerned with the writings, including translations, of 65 Irish men and women who are primarily poets. Whenever these writers produce a work in another format it is so noted within brackets. A poet is "contemporary" whose works are published inclusively, or almost so, during the second half of the 20th Century. Translations are arranged after the poet's original works, and collaborations are so noted. The writings of these poets found in various collections and periodicals will be forthcoming in another holdings list. So, stay tuned. We welcome your comments and questions. Poetry by Eavan Boland Degas’s Laundresses You rise, you dawn
roll-sleeved Aphrodites,
out of a camisole brine,
a linen pit of stitches,
silking the fitted sheets
away from you like waves. You seam dreams in the folds
of wash from which freshes
the whiff and reach of fields
where it bleached and stiffened.
Your chat’s sabbatical:
brides, wedding outfits, a pleasure of leisured women are sweated into the folds, the neat heaps of linen. Now the drag of the clasp. Your wrists basket your waist. You round to the square weight. Wait. There behind you. A man. There behind you. Whatever you do don’t turn. Why is he watching you? Whatever you do don’t turn. Whatever you do don’t turn. See he takes his ease staking his easel so, slowly sharpening charcoal, closing his eyes just so, slowly smiling as if so slowly he is unbandaging his mind. Surely a good laundress would understand its twists, its white turns, its blind design — it’s your winding sheet. The Pomegranate The only legend I have ever loved is The story of a daughter lost in hell.

What We Lost by Eavan Boland
    Love
By Eavan Boland Dark falls on this mid-western town
where we once lived when myths collided.
Dusk has hidden the bridge in the river
which slides and deepens to become the water
the hero crossed on his way to hell. Not far from here is our old apartment.
We had a kitchen and an Amish table.
We had a view. And we discovered there love had the feather and muscle of wings and had come to live with us, a brother of fire and air. We had two infant children one of whom was touched by death in this town and spared: and when the hero was hailed by his comrades in hell their mouths opened and their voices failed and there is no knowing what they would have asked about a life they had shared and lost. I am your wife. It was years ago. Our child was healed. We love each other still. Across our day-to-day and ordinary distances we speak plainly. We hear each other clearly.
