    The James Booker Collection
Sometimes the life of an artist is a tortured one. Such was the life of James Booker. While living a personal life filled with drugs, prison and paranoia, his professional life witnessed a style of piano playing that no man has ever been able to duplicate. Classically trained from an early age, this New Orleans native went on to study under jazz master Ellis Marsalis, and later performed with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Fats Domino, Ringo Starr and Jerry Garcia of the "Grateful Dead", as well as with many others. His style has influenced such noted piano players as Dr. John, George Winston, and one of James' students, Harry Connick, Jr. This folio contains some of James' best music written for solo piano, as well as an in-depth study of his unique style and contributions to the piano. This is a book that no piano player should be without! 144 pages, $25.95, SuperDuperItem 1701666 This Book Contains These SuperDuperSongs Junco Partner - Performed by: James Booker - Written by: Robert Ellen and Mack Ellen - © 1951 Come Rain Or Come Shine - From: Musical Production "St. Louis Woman" - Performed by: James Booker - Written by: Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen - © 1946

In early 1973, I had arranged with a night club named Dirty Pierre's, in the San Fernando Valley, to book a trio featuring Booker, John Boudreaux and myself (Dave Johnson). the three of us really tore the place up. One night, I invited Daniel Moore out to Dirty Pierre's to hear this band, and he was impressed with Booker's playing. We decided to add some players to the band and go into the studio and cut some tunes. Booker and I convinced Richard "Didimus" Washington, Alvin Robinson, Jessie Hill, and David Lastie, and Boudreauzx to go into Paramount Studios in Hollywood to do this album.
Not long after the session, the 16 track master tapes disappeared from the Paramount Recording Studios tape lobrary, and their whereabouts is still unknown. Recently (1992), Daniel Moore found the tapes of the mixes he did on the last night of the sessions (thank goodness) and that's what you're hearing. I was born right around the time Jelly Roll Morton, one of our favorite New Orleans pianists, died. He was taught by my grandfather, James Carroll Booker I. All the men in my family have been piano players. My grandfather was a monster. I'm James Carroll Booker III, and I was the cream of the crop ! Of course, the doctors and patients of Anchora Mental Institution gave their favorite patient a standing ovation for entertaining them. So did the prison officials at Angola State Prison in Louisiana. The Warden of Paris Prison in New Orleans was especially impressed and to prove it granted Convict #70567 - James Carroll Booker III - a telephone-equipped office in the Rehabilitation Department of the jail to preside over the Prison Music Foundation. The patients at the bug-house were starving for entertainment, and so were the inmates in jail. However, the spectators and participants of the recording session were individuals who were accustomed to being involved with musical giants on a round-the-clock basis. Coril Joseph of the States-Item said: "I think we're dreaming. That's what we're doing - dreaming." At one point Earl King exclaimed, "I'm watchin' this shit man, but I can't believe it. This is too much." The best is still yet to come, buddy. Wait till you pick up on the entire LP by His Highness, namely James Carroll Booker III. Unique distinction has never known nor visited a more worthy servant. New Orleans finally decided to make an enormous gift to the world of site, sound and emotion in the form of that "little old walkin' powerhouse" who happens to be

photograph by Michael P. Smith there was an apartment down on Decataur street, next door to Barry Kaiser, who still lives there, and it looked out on the warehouses and the mississippi and the empty steet on the edge of town. Not many tourists there in those days, 1981, 82, and that was when i lived there, from time to time, in the big empty apartment with the tin roof. I met Booker through dr. john, who told me Booker was the real thing, to go down and check him out. It was near me in the quarter, and the place was tiny, and his appearance there was very casual, like he just dropped in and decided to play. He was very shy, withdrawn, but seemed to me to be just a man who had dug a place too deep inside himself to stay in and now it was too far to come up to bother with visiting with people. We talked sometimes, but mostly i sat there looking at his back, or part of his face, and he played the piano. There might be three other people in there. And that was how we met. this photograph was taken the night we all went to hear Professor Longhair making what would be his final recording. I watched him record Tipatina, and witnessed so many new orleans players, legends even then, gather there that night. Mac with his cane and mojo, the diminutive professor, spry and very young. I shook his ancient hand.

Those holding political power in America today are so used to going unchallenged the turnover rate for incumbents is only a smidge higher than for Popes that when it actually happens, they go nuts. Witness the campaign craziness going on in Newark, N.J., where the race for mayor has become a case study in the nationwide clash pitting reformers vs. the establishment, the afflicted vs. the comfortable, the politics of ideas vs. the politics of dirty tricks, and a new generation of leaders vs. the members of an elite old guard who have outstayed their welcome and refuse to either think anew or make room for those who do. In elected office for thirty-two years, and feeling the heat of a surprisingly tight race, four-term mayor Sharpe James has leveled a variety of lunatic charges against his opponent, city councilman Cory Booker, accusing him of taking money from the KKK and the Taliban, collaborating with Jews to take over Newark, being a "faggot white boy" and (cover your ears, children) a Republican. What makes this mouth-foaming vitriol especially nutty is that Booker is an African-American, a Democrat, and a Stanford and Yale Law School educated Rhodes Scholar, who, in case you're wondering, is straight and hasn't received a dime from David Duke or Mullah Omar. Mayor James is acting as if he's King James and Booker is a traitor to the throne, questioning his divine right to rule. But far from the self-serving apostate portrayed by James, Booker is, in fact, a true reformer of the kind sorely lacking in our national politics driven by the needs of those left behind, struggling with failing schools, a chronic lack of health insurance, and a dearth of affordable housing.

    http://www.thejukejoint.com/jamesbooker.html
Incredibly rare signed LP jacket for "Classified!"
Signed in the year of his death.
Since his death, many "lost" recordings of Booker's solo work have surfaced displaying his surreal ability on the piano and organ, combining jazz classical and blues simultaneoulsly at times and seeming to be playing with a third (and sometimes fourth!) hand on many of these incredible recordings.
Unfortunately, autographs of Booker are quite rare since he wasn't generally considered a star while he was alive and not many people thought to ask for his autograph.
This signed album jacket (record NOT included, but shouldn't be too hard to find) is the only authentic James Booker autograph I have ever come across. Booker has signed it with typical oddness, "Thank you very much, James Booker. 1982 is now my cab 441"
What the meaning of these words is can be interpreted at your own risk, but I do know that Booker traveled mainly by taxi cab and that he was very superstitious. Perhaps "cab 441" was his lucky cab and he was showing some optimism for the future in the inscription. Understandable since he was just beginning to get some attention with this his first released studio LP in 1982 ("Classified"). Unfortunately, 1982 was also the year of his death.
A rare opportunity for the army of Booker fans that have been emerging in recent years.
