May 15, 2002 IT'S SHARPE OVER BOOKER (AP) After a ferocious campaign that put a normally ho-hum mayoral race in the national spotlight, Mayor Sharpe James won a fifth term to lead New Jersey's biggest city ousting a political upstart half his age. James, 66, beat back Ivy League-educated challenger Cory Booker, a 33-year-old freshman councilman who attracted national media attention with antics that included a hunger strike at a housing project. James and Booker waged a brutal, monthslong battle to lead a city struggling to replace its image of urban decay with one of an emerging success story. The candidates raised nearly $5 million between them with Booker getting most of his money from out of state while offering different visions of the city's future. With 99 percent of precincts reporting late Tuesday, James had 28,363 votes, or 53 percent, while Booker had 24,869 votes, or 46 percent. Democratic businessman Dwayne Smith trailed far behind with 339 votes.

May 14, 2002 SHARPE CROWS AFTER BEATING BOOKER (AP) Mayor Sharpe James and Councilman Cory Booker continued to trade public barbs a day after James fended off Booker's challenge to win a fifth term. Analysts credited the feat to a powerful party machine and the failure of Booker to convince enough voters he was a true Newarker. James beat Booker by more than 3,000 votes in the most difficult election of his 32-year career to stay on as mayor until 2006. Analysts said he had to call in every favor from the state's Democrats, including Gov. James E. McGreevey, to fend off Booker's well-organized and heavily financed challenge. McGreevey provided James with campaign consultants at the last minute and the labor unions who endorsed the mayor had better organized telephone banks to get out the vote, said political scientist Elizabeth A. Strom. James' position as a state senator in the Legislature also may have helped him win nearly unanimous party support, said David Rebovich, a political science professor at Rider University.

Family Topic BK Richard Booker I The founder of the Booker family in America was Edward Booker . Edward was born in England about 1590 and came to the Colony often to purchase tobacco for shipment to England. He settled in York County as early as 1648, and probably earlier. Edward’s home was “The Briell” situated where the counties of York, Elizabeth City, and Warwick met. Edward’s brother-in-law was the trader, or “adventurer,” Richard Glover . Briell was a town in the Netherlands. Edward Booker was perhaps the father of Richard Booker I [BK] , a resident of the colony. Richard was born in England and perhaps named for his presumed uncle, Richard Glover. In February 1686/7 Capt. Richard Booker secured a patent for 740 acres in Gloucester County, Virginia. On 20 April 1694, he was granted an additional 180 acres there and, on 20 October 1704, he was granted 613 acres in Essex County. Richard Booker was a militia captain of Gloucester County and a justice of the court in 1698. Richard Booker married first Rebecca Leake , the daughter of John Leake of York County. They were the parents of

    http://www.thei.aust.com/isite/btl/btlinkelman.html
Author James Kelman carefully rolls the sides of a cigarette paper around a large wedge of tobacco. He sniffs and his eyes water from concentrating on packing it in tightly and making sure no wiry curls snake out of the hand-made filter of the cigarette. There's a grim smile of determination on his rugged and lined features, and a grin when he finally completes the task.
A nocturnal and solitary creature by profession, Kelman, the controversial 1994 Booker Prize Winner and artist most frequently described as "Scotland's answer to Kafka, Joyce and Kierkegaard", is the epitome of a working class man minus - today - a pint of swampy beer and the gritty ambience of the surroundings of his local pub.
He reaches out, as if from the very skein of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas or writers of his ilk. Writers whose spirit dots history but does not necessarily produce more of its kind. Kelman's Scottish brogue is punctuated and pinched with sadness, regret and the fiery edge of instinct and survival, and the uncomfortable nature of the small office behind the reception area of Melbourne's Soiftel Hotel does nothing to endear his inspirational qualities, making him seem even more like a fish out of water, gasping for a hint of a familiar vice around him.
At home in Scotland's working class district or amid the throng and bellows of pubs filled with folk whose hands are roughened by a hard days graft, or amongst the excited cries of the local betting office where bet slips cover the ground like carpet, Kelman is far removed from the UK's stuffy literary fraternities who delight in intimate discussions on the philosophies and intellectual confines of art and act as purveyors of a tradition that can crush a naive author with their academic prowess and overbearing nuances of political correctness.
