The Booker Collection consists of Civil War correspondence, a diary, and miscellaneous documents relating to the Brooks family of Waynesboro, Augusta Co. These items are now in the possession of Andrew Brooks Booker, a direct descendant through Mary Susan Brooks. All five of James and Eleanor Brooks' sons fought in the Civil War, three died and only two survived. William died in 1861 of an unidentified illness, and Moffett died the following year of illness as well. Andrew died in 1863 of wounds sustained at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Most of the documents in the third section pertain to Andrew, both during his military career and after his death. This was Sharpe James territory, and no matter what Booker said or did, on May 14, the vote out of the manila cinderblock meeting room, also known as South Station Voting District 49, would belong to James. "I can't really tell what the vote will be, but people here are happy with Mayor James," said Nannie Fitts, president of the Tenants Association. Nevertheless, for Booker, it would be one of the most memorable afternoons of his long campaign for mayor. Booker had attended the Tenants Association's meeting the month before, but only James had been allowed to speak. Fitts, who had lived in the Kretchmer Homes senior housing facility for 20 years, had made sure he was invited back for his turn this month. Of the 30 people in the room, however, only a few applauded politely when Fitts introduced Booker. Several city officials, wearing blue "Sharpe James for Mayor" stickers on their suits, continued talking loudly in the back.

Iconoclastic Black Democrat Challenges Newark Machine By John Gizzi James, boss of a powerful political machine, doubles as state senator and mayor. Until recently he was considered a shoo-in for re-election in a city where he has faced only token opposition since unseating Mayor Kenneth Gibson in 1986. But the 66-year-old James is now facing the fight of his life thanks to freshman City Councilman Cory Booker. Other than the fact that both candidates are black Democrats, "Boss" Sharpe and 32-year-old Booker have little in common. But then very few people have much in common with Cory Booker. He grew up in an affluent suburb in Bergen County, starred on the high school football team and then attended Stanford University on an athletic scholarship. From there, he went to Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship, and, then, to Yale Law School. Then he took a trailer on a five-month tour around the city, living in it, and parking it at corners where drug dealers notoriously ran open-air drug markets with impunity. While Booker dubs himself a "proud Democrat," there is much in his campaign manifesto that appeals to voters of different political stripes and even to those who consider themselves conservatives.
