B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) Argentine poet, essayist, and short-story writer whose tales of fantasy and dreamworlds are classics of the 20th-century world literature. Borges was profoundly influenced by European culture, English literature, and such thinkers as Berkeley, who argued that there is no material substance; the sensible world consists only of ideas, which exists for so long as they are perceived. Most of Borges's tales embrace universal themes - the often recurring circular labyrinth can be seen as a metaphor of life or a riddle which theme is time. Although his name was mentioned in speculations about Nobel Prize, Borges never became a Nobel Laureate. "When the end draws near, there no longer remain any remembered images; only words remain. It is not strange that time should have confused the words that once represented me with those that were symbols of the fate of he who accompanied me for so many centuries. I have been Homer; shortly, I shall be On One, like Ulysses; shortly, I shall be all men; I shall be dead." (from 'The Immortal') After World War I the Borges family lived in Spain, where he was a member of avant-garde Ultraist literary group. His first poem, 'Hymn to the Sea,' is published in the magazine

Borges, Jorge Luis (1899 - 1986) Argentina Writer Geneva / GE
The great Argentinian writer lived for decades in Geneva . His family first found refuge during WWI, and young Borges learned French and German at the Calvin High School in downtown Geneva. Photos of the young Borges with his family in Geneva : photo #1 and photo #1 After the war, in 1919, the Borges family went back to Buenos Aires, where he began his career as a university professor and a writer. Later in his life, he returned to Geneva where he had an appartment at Grand-Rue 28 . Borges died in Geneva in June 1986 and is buried there, in the Kings Cemetery Borges was passionate about Geneva, and wrote :
Of all the cities in the world, of all the homelands that a man seeks to earn, Geneva seems to me to be the one most likely to bring happiness. Thanks to her I discovered, since 1914, French, Latin, German, Expressionism, Schopenhauer, the doctrines of Buddha, Taoism, Conrad, Lafcadio Hearn and nostalgia for Buenos Aires. Also love, frienship, humiliation and the siren call of suicide. Things remembered are always pleasant, even trials. These are personal reasons, but I can give a more general one. Unlike other cities, Geneva has no emphasis. Paris is not unaware that she is Paris. Benevolent London knows that she is London. Geneva, however, barely realizes that she is Geneva. Here are the towering shadows of Calvin, Rousseau, Amiel and Ferdinand Hodler, but no one speaks of them to the traveller passing through. Geneva, somewhat like Japan, has renewed herself without losing her past.

JORGE LUIS BORGES Writer Jorge Luis Borges was born in Argentina, but spent several years in Europe as a child and was educated in English as well as Spanish. As an adult he returned to Argentina to write and work as a professor of English. Conciously rebellious artistically, his poems and stories are imaginative and often puzzling, many of them vehicles for philosophical themes. Prolific and smart as all get-out, he wrote allegories, fantasies and even detective stories.
Other 20th-century poets include Carl Sandburg Robert Frost Langston Hughes and T.S. Eliot

Welcome to the Garden of Forking Paths, one of the most intriguing areas of the Libyrinth of Allexamina. Here you will find access to the garden planted by J.L. Borges, the Argentine writer, poet and philosopher. Although I tend the garden as well as I can, beware: among these sprawling labyrinths you will find illusions most seductive and truths most elusive. Let me show you around. Look, here a beautiful poppy, yes? But some say that it has the power to unravel time. And here: yes, this narcissus-flecked pool. The locals contend that if you gaze into its depths too long, you are in danger of merging with your reflection and losing all sense of Self; for your image becomes that of all men. And there, a gallery of mirrors most enigmatic; and hanging here, by this coin: the skin of a most unusual tiger. . . .
