Bow, Clara
Clara Bow Brown Brothers (1905-1965), actor Born on July 29, 1905, in Brooklyn, New York, Clara Bow was born into a poor family; she was sexually abused by her father and neglected by her mentally unbalanced mother. She went to Hollywood by way of a beauty contest while still in high school. A small part in Beyond the Rainbow (1922) brought her considerable attention, and she was soon playing starring roles in such movies as Down to the Sea in Ships The Plastic Age Mantrap Kid Boots (1926), and Dancing Mothers (1926). In 1927 she was a sensation in the silent-film version of Elinor Glyn's novel It. Thereafter known universally as "the It Girl," Bow was the embodiment of beauty, abandon, and sex appeal for the moviegoers of the Jazz Age. Others of the 30-odd movies in which she starred include Rough House Rosie Ladies of the Mob Three Weekends Dangerous Curves (1929), and The Saturday Night Kid (1929). Unable to make the transition from silent movies to those with sound, in part because of her strong Brooklyn accent, and further hampered by some highly publicized scandals, she retired in 1931. After unsuccessful comeback attempts in Call Her Savage (1932) and Hoopla (1933), she spent most of the rest of her life living quietly on a Nevada cattle ranch owned by her husband, former cowboy star Rex Bell, whom she had married in 1931. Having suffered from psychiatric problems, Bow died in West Los Angeles, California, on September 27, 1965.

Silent Star of January 1996
Clara Bow
T he "jazz baby" personified, Clara Bow (1906-1965) became one of Hollywood's brightest lights of the '20s. Saucy and pert, Clara was dubbed 'The "It" Girl' by Elinor Glyn and chosen to star in the film version of Ms. Glyn's famous novel. While nothing more than good old sex appeal, "It" symbolized the tremendous progress women were making in society, and leading the way was Clara Bow, the girl of the year, who had "It" in abundance. The daughter of a schizophrenic mother and a sexually abusive father, Clara broke away by winning the 1921 Fame and Fortune Contest, sponsored by Brewster Publications, publishers of Clara's favorite magazine, Motion Picture. Winning led to a small part in Beyond the Rainbow , where Clara's part was cut, and then to Down to the Sea in Ships. While critically panned, Clara's performance was praised and made clear Clara's ability to make the screen come alive with her presence. Still one step away from stardom, Clara was signed to B.P. Schulberg's

Her career flamed out in the 1930s after several scandals, and she retired at 28 to a 300,000-acre ranch in Nevada with her cowboy-star husband Rex Bell. Bow passed away in 1965. From her estate are a rare and unusual collection of photographs, scrapbooks, trophies and personal effects. THE CLARA BOW FILM PRESERVATION FUND Mr. David Stenn and I have collaborated to provide some very urgent news to Clara Bow fans and Silent Movie enthusiasts and collectors. Out of the 57 Clara Bow films that were made during her
film career, only about half of those survive in one form or
another. Some have been preserved. WINGS IT
MANTRAP
, and DANCING MOTHERS have all enjoyed
relative success at film conventions and revivals. A very
few have even been shown on AMC and TCM. Still others
can be found somewhere on video. Some of these titles
include: DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS CAPITAL
PUNISHMENT
THE PLASTIC AGE ... NO LIMIT , and CALL HER SAVAGE Curiously, many of these titles that are found on
video, are in real danger of being extinct. In fact,
many Clara Bow talkies exist only on nitrate. As you may know, nitrate is very flammable and disintegrates after so many years. Furthermore, just because a film exists (in nitrate) in a film archive, does not make it safe. Clara Bow's 1924 feature, BLACK LIGHTNING is case and point. It does exist, but time has not been very friendly to it. The nitrate print that exists at the UCLA Film Archive is decaying rapidly. A fully restored Russian print has

The Unknown Clara Bow There's only one who.. space The Unknown Clara Bow by William Cramer
Walk up to any person on the street and mention the name Clara Bow you would get blank stares and the question, "Who's that?" Granted, most people, outside us devoted silent movie fans have never even heard of the name. With virtually no showings of her films on TV or elsewhere, it is difficult for anyone in the general public to really know who Clara Bow was or what she did. Poster companies frequently tantalize us with images of Harlow, Monroe, Chaplin, Keaton, Garbo, Wayne, etc., but not Clara Bow. You would even be hard-pressed to find many Clara Bow titles in many of those specialty silent video catalogues. To those few silent movie fans who do know about Clara Bow, she is the "It" Girl-that red-headed one who took on legions of men, failed in talkies, and had several nervous breakdowns. Still fewer people know her as the "Flapper-par-Excellence" or "The Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman of sex, who always gets her man." But like so many of the great actors of yesteryear, rumors and legend have a way of superceding the truth. They have a way of distorting the facts and thereby eliminating any knowledge of what made these stars the truly talented phenomenons that they actually were. Clara Bow was a great actress. Adela Rogers St. Johns knew a great deal of actors during her long life. In "Hollywood, the Pioneers", (the Brownlow/Gill mini-series on silent movies), she mentioned Clara Bow as being one of the two "most utterly talented actors' she knew. John Gilbert was the other.

39. Clara Bow
Please don't tell me that you haven't heard of clara bow. It is a disgraceto old movie lovers if you do, but that's not even the point.
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Bungalow/3989/ClaraBow.html
Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry last updated: 12/9/98 Please don't tell me that you haven't heard of Clara Bow. It is a disgrace to old movie lovers if you do, but that's not even the point. The point is that it's boring to hear people say it all the time. (Typical conversation between me and a kid at school: "I can't believe that Clara Bow's one drama attempt is in a lost film." "Who's Clara Bow?") I mean, really. How could a person that still holds the record for most fan mail recived in a month be so neglected? Her films are hard to find, and are rarely shown on TV, but happily, she is popular among silent film fans for this simple reason-she is The It Girl. Clara Bow was born in a Brooklyn tenement in 1905 to an abusive wifebeating father and a mother who did not want children. (Her first two children were daughters, but neither lived to be older than six hours. The first of these daughters to die died nameless, and without a birth or death certificate. The poor baby was disposed of in the garbage can.) When Clara was born, her mother Sara was so sure this one had died as well that no birth certificate was ever obtained. It would not be long before Clara became aware that she was unloved. Clara had a sordid childhood. Her grandfather, the one man who cared a half a strand of hair for her, died when she was three. Her best friend was burned alive before her eyes when she was nine. Throughout her school years, the other girls teased her about her voice and her dresses that were made of her mother's old dresses. Clara's one escape was the movies, and she escaped often. Whatever money she had that didn't go to see movies went to buy movie magazines. In 1921, one magazine held a fame and fortune contest-send in two pictures of yourself and the winner gets to be in a motion picture. Clara sent two cheap photos of herself in and hoped for the best. When she notified her mother, the woman went nuts and threatened to kill her child. When Clara won the contest, her mother actually chased her with a butcher knife. But all attempts were in vain. Clara was to become an actress and there was nothing her cruel parents could do about it.
