Dr. John Bowles: BCI's Behind-the-Scenes Scholar
By Annika Keeley Too good to be true? That's what everyone at BCI has been saying about John Bowles since he joined us in 1993. After 24 years teaching at Central College in Iowa, John retired early because of complications from Parkinson's disease. Encouragement from his longtime friend, BCI founder Merlin Tuttle, helped convince John and his wife, Gay, to retire in Texas near BCI. Now John shares his expertise with us every Thursday as a volunteer research associate, and John and Gay have become dear friends to many BCI staff members. Although John has known Merlin since graduate school at the University of Kansas, he traces his interest in BCI to a time when he began noticing a change in people's attitudes toward his work with bats. Little by little, the usual disdain was turning into an active interest in bats. This was due in no small degree, John believes, to the educational efforts of BCI and its members. One story best illustrates the deep caring and enthusiasm that makes John so special to BCI. In 1998, John decided to try to find Bode, his eighth-grade science teacher, to let him know how inspiring his teaching had been. After finally locating Bode on the Internet, John didn't just send a quick note; he actually traveled to Mississippi and visited with his teacher for the first time in 50 years! John's philosophy of not putting things off until tomorrow was reinforced when Bode passed away a few months later.

A NEW Improved MAP of
HAMPSHIRE

These notes are made from a copy of Thomas Kitchin's map of Hampshire, the 1751 large map. The item studied is in the Map Collection of Hampshire CC Museum Service, item HMCMS:CRH1958.90. This example of the map is sectioned for folding, mounted on ?linen; it has a slip case. The map size is:- wxh, sheet = 70x54cm; wxh, plate = 691x535mm approximately; wxh, map = 681x523mm approximately.
This study concentrates upon what can be seen from the map; studies of the background of county mapping in England, and map makers have been published elsewhere.
Thomas Kitchin was an engraver and publisher at The Star opposite Ely Gate, Holborn, London from 1738 to 1776. He was a prolific producer of maps, plans and charts, and was by appointment Hydrographer to the King - George III. His output included sheet maps, series of maps for the Universal Magazine and the London Magazine, and atlases. He worked with Thomas Jefferys and particularly with Emanuel Bowen.
The 1751 large map by Thomas Kitchin, was one of a series of county maps by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin each doing some counties, published by John Hinton, King's Arms, St Paul's Churchyard, London, from 1749 to 1760. The Hampshire map was published 1751 (there was a small map of the county by Thomas Kitchin the same year). It was published again by John Tinney, Golden Lion, Fleet street, London, from 1753.
