Jacqueline Kennedy: Author: Hamish Bowles Metropolitan Museum of Art John F. Kennedy Library and Format: Hardcover, 208pp Pub. Date: April 2001 Publisher: ISBN: Book Review Customer Reviews (from Amazon.com) Review #1 Ranking 3 Caution: If you like looking at lots of photographs of early 1960s designer dresses, you will probably like this book. Otherwise, this is probably not the right book for you. During the presidential election of 1960, Ms. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy made an immense impression on American society. At 31, she was a dramatic contrast with the vice president's wife, Ms. Patricia Nixon, and recent first ladies (Ms. Mame Eisenhower, Ms. Bess Truman, and Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt). She was much younger than these women, was pregnant with her son, John, and seemed like someone who came from another world. Ms. Kennedy was highly cultured, interested in the fine arts, attractive in a way that showed up well in photographs and on television, and wore gorgeous clothes of the sort usually only seen in the best fashion magazines. Once in the White House, her differences from other first ladies became more apparent. A major effort to redecorate the White House with authentic pieces ensued, Lafayette Square's appearance was conserved, entertaining began to feature people from the world of fine arts, the Rose Garden was redesigned, and the clothes she wore became even more magnificent. A great deal of the sense of Camelot certainly came from Ms. Kennedy.

OVERVIEW Like men of color everywhere, African Americans living in southern Ohio were ready to defend the Union at the outset of war. They were of course, were denied the right to fight. In 1863 more than 100 AA men left Ross County and vicinity and headed for Boston Massachusetts to join the Mass 54th. Many became enrolled in the Mass. 55th USCT. One man Albert Wall, a mulatto, was determrined to serve his country so, he joined the Ohio 73rd OVI, Company H. He fought in the battle of Cross Keys in what is now West Virginia, when it was discovered he was infact a man of color. He was thrown out of the Company. Wall enlisted in the Masssachusetts 54th when it was formed and was wounded in battle. The Lounge The Shop Home ... Chris Yates Paul Bowles: not beat yet
by Marcel Theroux
Taken from Idler issue 3, 1993

Friend of the beatniks, poet, composer, author of The Sheltering Sky : the octogenarian Paul Bowles was still working and still dressing like a gentleman when Marcel Theroux visited him in the Tangier block of flats where he had lived for 35 years.
I shuffled from foot to foot in the gloomy hallway, three storeys above the wet street where a group of children were frolicking and shouting in Arabic. telling myself it was too late to let embarrassment get in the way of effrontery, I gave another blast on the doorbell. I felt like a literary groupie of the worst kind: persistent unannounced, and worse still, I'd never bought any of his books. There was silence behind the door marked with a brass plate that read "Mr Paul Bowles" in capitals. But I knew Bowles was inside, and I was determined to brazen it out. Finally the door was opened by Bowles's masseur and I went into the sitting room. Through it in a stuffy little bedroom, lay Mr Bowles himself.
Paul Bowles, poet, writer, composer, exile, has been living in the same block of flats in Tangier since 1957. From his modest apartment he has watched the Beat generation come and go, the city slip out of international control and the sexual adventurers of the Fifties and Sixties give way to day trippers from Algericas in shell-suits. Tangier has gone straight, trading the illicit glamour of its past for a steadier income as a tourist destination. The literary outlaws have gone too. only Bowles, whom they claimed as a patron but who always stood apart from them remains. Now, by association, he is among the city's patrons.

The Music
The first programmers of the CSIR Mk1 were Geoff Hill and Trevor Pearcey. Geoff Hill had perfect pitch and came from a very musical family. Hill was the first person to program the CSIR Mk1 to play a musical melody. It was played publicly for the first public exhibition of the computer on the 7th to 9th of August in 1951, at the inaugural Conference of Automatic Computing Machines in Sydney. The sound production technique used on the CSIR Mk1 was as crude as is possible to imagine on a computer. Raw pulses of the computer's data words were sent to an audio amplifier with a speaker attached. However, this occurred when there were no digital-to-analog converters, there was no digital audio practice and little in the way of complete digital audio theories. In addition, the CSIR Mk1 produced music in real-time. The CSIR Mk1 operated in Sydney Australia from about November 1949 to June 1955. Geoff Hill was the main programmer at that time and he used the machine to play musical melodies. These melodies, mostly from popular songs, were; 'Colonel Bogey', 'Bonnie Banks', 'Girl with Flaxen Hair' and so on. Here is an image (120KB) of the instructions for Cherry's Music Programme.
