Witty Women Written By Alana Burgi Sanko
(From the August '98 issue of "Written By") H aving literally just dipped my toe in the world of writing for half-hour television comedy, my reaction to the whole experience is extremely ambivalent. Regardless of one's gender or race, it's a demanding job that can take all of you if you let it. And for women writers, the continuing concerns of balancing work and family are just as prevalent in the writers' room as they are in boardrooms across the country. Because I seek inspiration from those who walk before me, I began to wonder where all the role models arethe mentors, the successful women who have sustained long careersbecause they seemed few and far between. I researched the subject and discovered that only 24 percent of the active members of the Writers Guild of America, west, are women. The majority of those members write for television (nearly three times the number that write for film), and 63 percent are over the age of forty. While these numbers are impersonal and largely unimpressive, they are thought-provoking. So, who are the women who have managed to sustain a minority of the jobs and what are their stories? To find the answers, I sought out women who had written situation comedies for at least five years and discovered there were many amazing stories out there. What follows are five inspirational profiles of women with very different perspectives and experiences who share one distinct commonality: a love for sitcom TV.

Living Single
(From the January '97 issue of 'Written By')
Left to Right: Jacque Edmonds, Bill Fuller, Jim Pond, Warren Hutcherson, Roger S.H. Schulman Greg:Susan quit her job when we got engaged so she could travel with me. Sure we have less income, but money can't buy happiness. Regine: That's true. (BEAT) But it can buy you a shiny red Mercedes and you can drive up real close to it. ("A Kiss Before Lying," written by Robert Horn and Daniel Margosis) It's a much-quoted industry notion that series creator Yvette Lee Bowser is generally credited with developing the show that was Friends before the friends on Friends became friends. Centered around the lives of six characters who occupy apartments in the same building (except for Rossoops, I mean Max - who seems to stop by an awful lot), the show broke down a huge TV barrier with its central depiction of four single, quirky professional women living life on their own terms. The fact that they are African American women isn't the only aspect of the show that makes Living Single so unique. Try to think of any sitcom currently on the air that has a single female who's central character arc isn't a preoccupation with finding a man. Not very easy, is it? That central focus, the exploration of these women's characters and lives, has been held together by Bowser and executive producer Roger S.H. Schulman, who has been with the show since its first season. As the show has progressed through the seasons, the two male characters have been equally developed. Schulman is forthcoming about the fact that the actors in the cast contributed to that process. "After the first run-through of a script, there's a big give-and-take where we sit down with the actors and talk about what they think of the scriptanything specific, anything general. They've had a lot of input into where their characters have gone."

25. Tuned In: Networks Scramble To Add Minority Characters
Executives from The WB came prepared yesterday, announcing plans for a new serieswith yvette lee bowser, creator of Living Single and For Your Love

Tuned In: Networks scramble to add minority characters Wednesday, July 21, 1999 By Rob Owen , Post-Gazette TV Editor PASADENA, Calif. Every year the networks film pilot episodes, or short presentations for new series. And every year the networks play a shell game afterwards, replacing actors here, rethinking characters there. This year there's been more of that than usual, perhaps due in part to the uproar over the small number of minority characters in the original pilots. "A lot of producers did some scrambling in the past few weeks," said Jonathan Prince, executive producer of UPN's interracial sitcom "Grown Ups." "That's OK, make 'em scramble." Possibly the most obvious example of such rethinking can be found in The WB's "Safe Harbor," a family drama from the creator of "7th Heaven." Gregory Harrison plays a widower with two teen sons and a younger set of twins. At least, they used to be twins. The twins have been recast as 12-year-old best friends who think of themselves as "cosmic twins" because they were born on the same day in the same town. And now one of them is played by an African-American actor. ABC's "Wasteland" and "Then Came You" will get new black characters, as will Fox's "Manchester Prep."

4 women exert influence at UPN
Monday, October 28, 2002
Bill Keveney; USA TODAY
If UPN created a behind-the-scenes series about its Monday lineup, it might call it ''Sisters in Charge.'' Black women are the top producers on all four comedies, apparently a prime-time first.
Even as women and people of color begin to assume more power positions in TV, this is a one-of-a-kind sorority in a business in which most producers in charge of operations still are white and male.
The Monday half-hour comedies, which have predominantly black casts, draw small ratings compared with shows on larger networks, but they're among the top-rated shows among blacks and are up 4% in total viewers in an otherwise down season for UPN. The one new show, Half and Half, has been picked up for the full season.
For the UPN quartet Sara Finney-Johnson of The Parkers, Eunetta Boone of One on One, Mara Brock Akil of Girlfriends and Yvette Lee Bowser of Half and Half the milestone is a source of pride, tinged with a bit of reservation that it is so rare.
''I'm proud to be a part of this. I don't think it's ever happened in television,'' says Finney-Johnson, who adds that change comes slowly.

Visit the Forum Half-sisters Mona and Dee Dee have only one thing in common: their father. Growing up separately, these two virtual strangers suddenly become neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building and experience the challenges of sisterhood for the first time.
Mona (Rachel True), a budding music executive, was raised by her single mother, Phyllis (Telma Hopkins), to be an independent woman who does things in her own free-spirited and sometimes sardonic style. By contrast, younger sister Dee Dee (Essence Atkins) is a privileged honor-roll college student who grew up in a two-parent home, but searches for her own identity out of the shadow of her overbearing mother, Big Dee Dee (Valarie Pettiford). Now in their twenties, these two vastly contrasting women are discovering the advantages and joys that the special bond of sisterhood offers. But their relationship is not without its problems, as they often clash on everything from morals to money to men. Meanwhile Spencer (Chico Benymon), Mona's best friend, becomes the conscience of the group and helps build a bridge between the women.

Getting Personal: The Systemic Nature of the
    "Black" Sitcom Genre
by Nsenga K. Burton Julia (1968) to Sanford and Son (1971) to The Cosby Show (1984) , sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. In recent years, there has been an onslaught of "black" sitcoms appearing on commercial television largely due to the success of The Cosby Show and the mass appeal of urban culture. Not only are African-Americans cast in roles in sitcoms, but some have also been hired as executive producers, producers, and writers. Many have found commercial success including Debbie Allen, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Martin Lawrence, and Yvette Lee Bowser. Although African-Americans have attained some level of success in the television sitcom genre, the fact remains that images of African-Americans in these sitcoms are still questionable, and have led many to believe that we have returned to the age of minstrelsy. Simple logic should dictate that with more African-Americans in positions of power on these particular shows, African-American images and story lines should improve, but obviously this is not the case. It is my assertion that because of the systemic nature of the television industry, it is improbable that African-Americans can look to television sitcoms for more acceptable images and characterizations of themselves. "Black" sitcoms are being carried on a variety of commercial networks. The two fledgling upstarts, United Paramount Network (UPN) and The Warner Brothers Network (WB) showcase so many "black" sitcoms that they have been dubbed the "Us People Network" and the "We Black" Network by network viewers. However, it is not these two networks that most interest me, but it is the Fox network that has literally become a power player in the commercial television business largely due to the success of innovative programming including "black" sitcoms like
