Laurel Clark Laurel Clark may have been born in Ames, Iowa, but she considered Racine, Wisconsin, to be her home. She grew up in Racine, along with her three younger siblings. She went to high school at William Horlick High School, Racine Wisconsin, graduating in 1979. She went on to receive a bachelor of science degree in zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983 and doctorate in medicine from the same school in 1987. Laurel married a fellow Navy officer, Jonathan Clark. They have an 8-year-old son, Iain. She was a commander in the U.S. Navy and a naval flight surgeon. When Laurel had to decide on an object she had a personal association with to take into space with her, she choose taking a Wisconsin-made teddy bear, dressed in a "pleather" jacket with the College of Letters and Science logo and "Zoology" embroidered on the front, placed over the heart. She also took two Medical School medallions commemorating her contribution to science.

Telephone Conversation With the Astronauts Aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia
January 18, 1990 The President. Hello, Fred, can you hear me? Dan? Are we talking to space? Commander Brandenstein. Yes, sir, Mr. President. Welcome aboard Columbia. We hear you very clearly. The President. Well, Dan, is that you, the captain, the boss of that outfit? Commander Brandenstein. Well, that's what they say, but everybody contributes a lot, and I just kind of stay out of the way so they can get their jobs done. The President. Well, listen, I just was calling you to congratulate you. Dan Quayle is sitting here next to me in the Oval Office, and as you know, he's taken a very active role in this Space Council. But what I'm calling to do is to congratulate you and the crew, after all those somersaults but doing a superb job up there on this mission. And we followed the LDEF [Long Duration Exposure Facility] and the very exciting grab, and I just wanted to hear firsthand how it was going. Commander Brandenstein. Well, Mr. President, I think it's going well. We've pretty much concluded most of the major objectives of this mission, and obviously, the retrieval of the LDEF was one of the highlights, and we're very happy we have it back onboard. We believe it's a real treasure that's going to help very much in designing future space satellites and shuttles and space stations.

Release No: 01-95
Date: 15 Nov. 2001 Back to 2001 News
PANAMA CITY, Panama: Daniel Brandenstein, a retired U.S. Navy Captain and a former chief within the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), recently told young people at Panamanian schools about the importance of setting goals for their lives, and the role a solid Christian faith can play.
A member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, Brandenstein visited the Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Panama ministry center to speak to youth groups about his experiences in space, as well as his support of the LHM program called Project JOEL (Youth With Free Spirits). He also addressed groups at a fundraising luncheon and dinner, sharing with them the challenges of space travel, and telling them that he was not nervous even on his first space flight because he grew up with a solid faith in Christ.
A lifelong Lutheran, Brandenstein rode to the pinnacle of NASA’s space astronaut program and served as commander of four shuttle flights, finishing out his career as the chief of astronauts.
Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso authorized the presentation to Brandenstein of the “Order of Amador Guerrero” medal in the level of “Commander,”— the highest decoration that can be bestowed on a foreigner by the Panamanian government. The ceremony was held at the Panamanian Office of Foreign Affairs, and the medal was presented by Panama’s vice chancellor.
