What Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Branson and Lee Iacocca can teach you about building a leaner, stronger, healthier body...
The year is 1965. It's a frosty morning along the old Czechoslovakian Border, just after five am. Two young Austrian soldiers are exercising in the trenches, the steam from their bodies rising into the icy cold air. Both are exhausted from a 15-hour working day. Yet somehow, they are still able to find the time and energy to wake up before their colleagues and train with weights before they start another physically demanding day of maneuvers. Can you imagine any more difficult circumstances in which to exercise? Despite these obstacles, Arnold Schwarzenegger describes his time in the Austrian army as a period when he made much of his best early progress. What was it about Arnold that gave him such a passion for exercise? How was he able to achieve so much success, not just in bodybuilding, but as a businessman, actor and (maybe) a politician?
Values
Examine the traits of any successful person, and you'll notice they all share certain qualities. Characteristics such as commitment, courage, honesty, discipline and energy figure highly in the success stories of people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Branson and Lee Iacocca. These characteristics, known as values, are a key driving force in human behavior. Simply becoming aware of your values and how they influence your behaviour is a

Richard Branson's appearance coincided with the start of Kuwait's fifth annual shopping festival, "offering huge discounts", according to the Gulf Daily News. Not that there's much else to do in Kuwait right now - but in a blow for sexual equality (of sorts), women are now able to visit Kuwait's stock exchange for the first time. True, it's only a mezzanine floor overlooking the main operation, and it is called the Ladies Trading Floor, but still. Across the border in Iraq, women can already participate fully in the surprisingly booming Baghdad stock exchange, and without having to use a Ladies Trading Floor either. After the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia on Saturday, US commentators waited for a suitable period to make considered analysis. Some waited for as long as three entire minutes before posting their first crackpot conspiracy theories on the internet.

Virgin - the third most recognised brand in Britain - is now becoming the first global brand name of the 21st century. We are involved in planes, trains, finance, soft drinks, music, mobile phones, holidays, cars, wines, publishing, bridal wear - the lot! What ties all these businesses together are the values of our brand and the attitude of our people. We have created over 200 companies worldwide, employing over 25,000 people. Our total revenues around the world in 1999 exceeded £3 billion (us$5 billion).
We believe in making a difference. In our customers' eyes, Virgin stands for value for money, quality, innovation, fun and a sense of competitive challenge. We deliver a quality service by empowering our employees and we facilitate and monitor customer feedback to continually improve the customer's experience through innovation.
Virgin began in the 1970s with a student magazine and small mail order record company. Our growth since then has not only been impressively fast, it has also been based on developing good ideas through excellent management principles, rather than on acquisition.
We look for opportunities where we can offer something better, fresher and more valuable, and we seize them. We often move into areas where the customer has traditionally received a poor deal, and where the competition is complacent. And with our growing e-commerce activities, we also look to deliver 'old' products and services in new ways. We are pro-active and quick to act, often leaving bigger and more cumbersome organisations in our wake.

Lessons from Sir Richard Branson
Virgin Billionaire By studying the lives of exceptional people, we gain insights that may in turn help us to become exceptional. Here are some of the highlights from my recent readings on Richard Branson.
Founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Music, and more than 170 other companies Richard Branson epitomizes innovation and out-of-the-box thinking. The following excerpts from his autobiography Losing My Virginity illustrate several of the qualities which have helped formulate his success.
1. Motivated by something beyond money.
"Above all, you want to create something you are proud of.... That has always been my philosophy of business. I can honestly say that I have never gone into any business purely to make money. If that is the sole motive, then I believe you are better off doing nothing." p. 43
2. The importance of a good name.
"All you have in life is your reputation: you may be very rich, but if you lose your good name, then you'll never be happy. The thought will always lurk at the back of your mind that people don't trust you. I had never really focused on what a good name meant before, but that night in prison made me understand."
In his book, Branson tells the story of a Mike Oldfield concert that was to take place at Queen Elizabeth Hall. Oldfield, the featured artist, had decided he did not want to do it. This was a major promotional event, designed to bring visibility to Virgin Records' inaugural shining star. Tickets had been sold, the concert all set to go and Oldfield, that morning, had determined not to perform.

How he's retooling his empire for the Internet
Sitting at one end of the salon of his elegant London townhouse, Richard Branson reluctantly admits he is no fan of technology. He doesn't even have a corporate office, preferring to work out of one of his four homes using little more than a phone and a red-bound ledger. Branson hasn't bothered to open the box containing a handheld computer that British tech company Psion PLC sent him as a present. ''Any time I try and use computers, they crash on me,'' he says.
That's Branson the technophobe. Branson the hard-charging tycoon of Virgin Group PLC is somebody else again. Flush from the December sale of a 49% share of Virgin Atlantic Airways to Singapore Airlines Ltd., Branson has found his Next Big Thing. Surprise: It's cell phone franchises and electronic commerce. On Jan. 12, Branson and an all-star team of investors assembled to bid for one of Britain's five next-generation mobile licenses, which promise to bring high-speed Internet and multimedia to cell phones. The expected price tag, when a winner is announced this spring: upwards of $800 million.

Student , survived." After publishing his magazine for a while, Branson observed that mail order discount music companies were doing well. In 1970, Branson started his own mail order record company, and the same year, he and several friends opened the first music discount store in England, calling it "Virgin." Over the years, Branson has tackled numerous businesses, mostly out of frustration with how particular industries were run. "Some of those industries I would never have dreamt of going into," he says. "In the end, when they've worked, they've worked pretty spectacularly." Virgin took on the airline industry, going head-to-head with British Airways, which eventually led Branson to sell his music company in 1992 to provide his airline with much-needed funds. Today, Virgin Airways Ltd. brings in 51 percent of the revenues for Virgin Group Ltd., its parent company, with sales of more than $2.1 million in fiscal-year 2001. Other industries Virgin companies are tackling include modeling, bridal services, financial services, book publishing, music stores, electricity and gas, British rail, and even a new music company-V2. Today, there are nearly 170 companies under the Virgin umbrella.

Despite Courtney Love's recent arrest after her unruly behaviour on a Virgin Atlantic flight, all is apparently forgiven between the rock star and the airline. In fact, the company's boss Sir Richard Branson, who says the singer apologised to him at Kevin Spacey's Old Vic fundraising party in London, declared that he was actually "looking forward" to having her as a passenger for her flight home.
The controversial Hole front woman was taken into custody on Tuesday upon landing at Heathrow airport after cabin crew complained that she swore at a flight attendant and became abusive during the flight. Police eventually let her off with a warning for "causing harassment, alarm and distress".
"Virgin Atlantic was built thanks to the rock industry so I like to think we are a bit more understanding than most airlines," says Sir Richard, who reportedly offered the rowdy blonde four first-class tickets for later use. "Courtney was a little out of order on the flight over and apologised to me. We are looking forward to flying her back to LA."

The Incredible Triumph of an Enigmatic Entrepreneur When Richard Branson's granny was 99, she wrote him to say that the last 10 years had been her best. He should read the book, "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. She had loved it. But most of all, her advice to Richard was "You've got one go in life, so make the most of it." Those are words that mean so much to Richard Branson, as they go right to the heart of his belief in making it on your own. Now, head of 150 or so enterprises that carry the Virgin name, with a personal wealth estimated at nearly $3 billion, he has followed that personal dream and made the most of it. He still holds the record as fastest to cross the Atlantic ocean by boat. He still hopes to be first to circle the globe in a balloon. It is a success that was never expected for a dyslexic, nearsighted boy. Richard didn't breeze through school. It wasn't just a challenge for him, it was a nightmare. His dyslexia embarrassed him as he had to memorize and recite word for word in public. He was sure he did terribly on the standard IQ tests...these are tests that measure abilities where he is weak. In the end, it was the tests that failed. They totally missed his ability and passion for sports. They had no means to identify ambition, the fire inside that drives people to find a path to success that zigzags around the maze of standard doors that won't open. They never identified the most important talent of all. It's the ability to connect with people, mind to mind, soul to soul. It's that rare power to energize the ambitions of others so that they, too, rise to the level of their dreams.
