(GBR) Branson Wants to Run Olympic Lottery
By : Matthew Garrahan Date : Tuesday, January 28, 2003
Sir Richard Branson is to tell ministers he wants to run the special Olympic lottery planned to fund any London bid for the 2012 games. Sir Richard, whose People's Lottery consortium lost out to Camelot for the National Lottery operator's licence in 2000, said he would be "happy to help" with an Olympic lottery game and he would shortly contact Tessa Jowell, culture secretary. Sir Richard, a strong critic of Camelot, wants the lottery to be run by a not-for-profit organisation, which he wants extended to any special Olympic lottery game. "If the government decides someone other than Camelot could could run (the Olympic lottery game), we would be interested," he said. Ms Jowell has agreed to split the cost of staging the 2012 games with Ken Livingstone, London's mayor. Under the deal, Londoners would pay Pounds 1.1bn of the predicted Pounds 2.6bn cost, with the government providing the remainder. Most of this sum would come from any Olympic lottery game, with Camelot asked to decide whether a new game could generate the necessary Pounds 1.5bn.

Virgin's new tilting train will remain upright for now
By Ryan Dilley
BBC News Online Five year in development, Sir Richard Branson's Pendolino leaning trains are finally taking passengers. But the journey is still far from smooth. Pendolino - in Italian roughly translated as "she that leans" - is sadly and quite literally "she that won't be leaning any time soon" here in the UK, thanks to Railtrack. The train made its maiden journey on Tuesday
The inability of the now-defunct rail infrastructure company to upgrade the track means that Sir Richard Branson's shiny 140mph toy won't be breaking any speed records on its first public run. Ever the optimist, Sir Richard told BBC News Online that he was "reasonably confident" that Railtrack's successor, Network Rail, would have his fleet of Pendolinos leaning eventually. "The problems with Railtrack we could have done without, but we're looking forward not back."

The Pendolino would no doubt look more breathtaking under an azure Italian sky than pulling into Birmingham International in drizzle.

Anita Roddick and Richard Branson step aside, a new breed of entrepreneurs is set to influence business
Media Releases: Anita Roddick and Richard Branson step aside, a new breed of entrepreneurs is set to influence business
The innovation of young Australians is being recognised through a new program at RMIT University that aims to nurture a new breed of entrepreneurs very different to those of the 1980s.
Professor Sheldrake sees entrepreneurs as critical to this growth, as the people who take ideas and turn them into reality.
The first year will consist of students forming teams to run a business. This practical approach to learning will be complemented by presentations from current entrepreneurs and module subjects such as marketing. There will be no official timetable for classes, with formal teaching taking place as and when students require it. In second and third year, students will develop an innovative business project inside a major company and set up and run their own companies.
The program is modelled on the highly successful degree at Babson College in the US, which has been running for 20 years and is recognised as a world leader in entrepreneurship. Recent success stories to develop as a result of student initiatives include Smartbride.com, the US's largest online site for finding local wedding services, and Highwired.com, the world's largest online global community for high schools.

Passenger safety is paramount with Virgin Atlantic

This commitment to safety paid off in December 1997 when the crew on a Virgin flight from London to Miami saved the life of a passenger in sudden cardiac arrest. It was the first successful defibrillation in U.S. airspace history. Early CPR, rapid defibrillation, and medication saved passenger.
Since the rescue happened, Branson has spoken out in support of greater access to AEDs. And Mr. Tweedie is back home in Scotland doing fine.

What’s left for Virgin’s Richard Branson to conquer? How ’bout Boston?
BY TAMARA WIEDER
There's little one can say about Richard Branson — that’s Sir Richard Branson — that hasn’t been said (or written, or shouted through a megaphone) before. Founder and chair of all things Virgin: Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Megastores (which opened its latest location in Boston amid much fanfare last week), Virgin Entertainment Group, et al. Owner of the British Virgin Islands’ Necker Island (where daily rates start at $15,000). World-record breaker (in 1986, Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Challenger II crossed the Atlantic in the fastest recorded time; the following year, his Virgin Atlantic Flyer was the first hot-air balloon to cross the Atlantic, among other records). Author. Billionaire. Media phenomenon. Celebrated Brit, and international celebrity. So when there’s so little left to say about Richard Branson, you simply let Richard Branson speak for himself. Q: Why’d you choose Boston for a Virgin store?

Best of British
Andrew Millington talks to Sir Richard Branson
If you ask somebody to name a successful British businessman, Sir Richard Branson is likely to be the first that will spring to their mind. Indeed, his reputation as an entrepreneur is international: he has both made a guest appearance on Friends and been the butt of the humour of The Simpsons, and has even taken to writing articles for Oxford University's second-favourite weekly paper in a bid for attention. It was therefore with some disappointment that on meeting Sir Richard I realised that, behind the carefully stage-managed image and the equally carefully tended facial hair of the Virgin tycoon, there is hidden a surprisingly normal bloke. Of course, Branson is by no means an average guy - one look at his bank balance would prove that. But the charisma that comes across so well through photos and press releases about anything from a balloon trip to a new mobile phone company is surprisingly lacking in the flesh. This is the man who dressed up as a blushing-but-bearded bride for publicity, and yet he seems nervous and tentative both in addressing the Union and in conversation afterwards, repeatedly stroking his chin and offering a toothy smile when in mid-sentence he runs out of things to say. And yet this may be where the root of Branson's appeal and success lies. Do people buy into the Virgin brand partly because they feel the man at the top is 'one of us'? Branson is clear that his down-to-earth manner has helped him, in that "if I'm, say, launching a financial services company I won't use words like 'bid offer spread', I'll use language which people understand because that's the language I understand." The unpredictable path his company has taken over the last two decades, whereby in his words "a lot of it has just been one challenge leading onto another", has given his rise to success a devil-may-care quality that marks him out from the stereotypical big-businessman; his image is that of the chirpy underdog taking on the established corporate hierarchy and winning, with Virgin's seemingly foolhardy challenge to British Airways a prime example.

A short film made by film director Paul d'Auria, in recognition of The Royal Marsden Hospital, which helped him fight his cancer, is being shown all over the world at 30,000 feet . . . Millionaire businessman Richard Branson, owner of international airline Virgin Atlantic, agreed to show the commercial called The Palmist, which requests support for the hospital's cancer fund, on Virgin flights out of London from the beginning of April. Richard Branson Richard Branson's support for the 90 second film came after he was contacted by Trust Chairman, Lord Hussey, at the end of last year. In a letter to the Virgin boss, Chairman of the Royal Marsden, Lord Hussey explained: "We are deeply touched that Paul has dedicated this film to the Royal Marsden and we all share his determination that research into the issues and treatment of cancer must continue as a top national priority. "What is truly remarkable about the whole project is that it has been achieved due to the sheer determination of Paul. He is only 38, has had seventy tumours and his left lung removed in a six year battle against a rare form of glandular cancer.

LIKE A VIRGIN
By Anthony B. Perkins
From December 1995 issue
At 16, Richard Branson formed his first serious enterprise when he launched Student , a U.K.-wide magazine for his peers. A few years later, he parlayed his publishing experience into founding Virgin as a mail-order record retailer, and shortly thereafter, he opened a record shop on Oxford Street in London. By the time he was 22, he had built his own record studio. Over a 20-year period Virgin Records worked with artists such as Peter Gabriel, The Human League, Steve Winwood, Simple Minds, Phil Collins, Janet Jackson, and The Rolling Stones and grew into the sixth-largest record company in the world. Somewhere along this magical mystery tour, Mr. Branson founded Virgin Atlantic Airways, which has since grown to become the second-largest British international airlineand he also found time to sail his boat and fly his hot-air balloon across the Atlantic in record time.
The Herring: The Virgin Group of Companies represents every aspect of the publishing food chainfrom artistic talent, to multimedia production, to mega-retail distribution. Is it accurate to assume that this was all part of a well-calculated plan on your part?

Virgin Blue Flying High After A Year Of Operation 22nd August 2001 More low fare flights for South Australians 1st August 2001 Birthday Bonanza 31st August 2001 Darwin Set To Become "Virgin Territory"!
Daily Flights To Commence By March 2002!
Australia's only low fare carrier, Virgin Blue, today announced plans to service the Northern Territory, offering direct daily Brisbane-Darwin flights by March next year. In line with Virgin Blue tradition, a special launch fare of $150.00 one-way is now on offer for all seats for the first 15 days of operation from March 1 to March 15. Virgin Blue owner, Richard Branson, made the announcement after touching down in Darwin early this morning, as the first stop on a visit to celebrate Virgin Blue's 1st birthday. The decision to begin flights to Darwin is the result of huge public demand, the long-standing efforts of the Northern Territory Tourism Commission as well as the proactive commitment of the newly elected Clare Martin Government. Richard Branson joined Chief Minister, Clare Martin and Virgin Blue CEO, Brett Godfrey, to announce a partnership that is structured to help reduce the Northern Territory's expenditure on travel costs, while boosting tourism into the Territory.
