However, the thorough assessment of Virgin Blue documentation comprising some 19 manuals and 5000 pages is continuing. Since August 3 is less than two weeks away, Virgin Blue thinks it would be unfair on those people who have already booked with us to have them risk waiting for approval. The airline has started contacting people today who booked for travel up to mid August to offer them a full refund and future travel compensation on Virgin Blue or alternative travel arrangements. To avoid any further uncertainty for prospective customers, Virgin Blue feels obliged to defer any future reservations until the documentation process has been finalised. With 15 years of experience in the international aviation market, including the launch of three airlines, Virgin fully appreciates the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's exacting standards.

Twentieth Century's Successful Entrepreneurs : a Select Bibliography Introduction Over the last century, the world has witnessed the emergence of a group of entrepreneurs whose enterprising spirit has made a tremendous impact in the world of business. Besides setting up business ventures, some are masters of opportunities while others are creators of companies and jobs. This select bibliography is about 24 of such entrepreneurs who have become legendary business figures like Bill Gates, Anita Roddick and George Soros to name just a few. Every one of them has created valuable and sustainable companies and has become universal household icons. The selection is entirely arbitrary and primarily based on the holdings of the NUS libraries. Not an exhaustive listing, this bibiliography includes books, journal articles and some audiovisual materials. The entrepreneurs are listed in alphabetical order and under each heading, the citations are alphabetically arranged by author/title of book, book chapter or journal article. All the book titles, except those on order, are identified by the following location symbols:. CL Central Library
HML = Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library
SC Science Library
For more comprehensive information on these entrepreneurs, you are recommended to search from the ABI-INFORM, the web-based database accessible by Library members.

"The idea of doing something that man has never done before has a great appeal."
Richard Branson
(CBS)
(CBS) Although relatively unknown in America, Richard Branson is one of the most recognized faces in Britain. A 49-year-old tycoon and adventurer known to some as "Richard the Lionhearted," he runs a multibillion dollar financial empire called the Virgin Group, which has interests in everything from airlines to record stores.
When 60 Minutes Correspondent Steve Kroft first profiled Branson seven years ago, the charismatic entrepreneur was just becoming well known. This year Kroft revisited Branson to find out how the billionaire had changed. Click here to read the two segments:
  • 1992 Profile
  • Update, January 2000
  • 1992 Profile In a country where business and society are run by knighted gentlemen with inherited money, Richard Branson stands out. He is a certified British eccentric, a slightly awkward, inarticulate party animal, a shameless promoter, a risk taker and maybe even a hustler. For a time he not only owned the world record for the fastest transatlantic crossing by boat; he now owns the third-largest private corporation in Britain, which he runs without an office, a desk - or a high school education.

Can Virgin Extend Its Virtual Reach?
Richard Branson's virtual success with Virgin Mobile is attracting imitators.
    FORTUNE
    Thursday, October 31, 2002
    By Mark Halper
Leave it to Richard Branson to figure out how to make money in cellphones. The trick: Don't own a mobile-phone company. Virgin Mobile has done remarkably well as a virtual operatorbuying capacity from partners like T-Mobile and reselling it to subscribers. So why is Branson thinking of buying a Finnish company that would saddle him with all the headaches of owning a network? By using the still-hip Virgin brand, Branson has picked up two million British subscribers in the past three years. Now the country's fifth-largest mobile company, Virgin Mobile earned #3.4 million ($5.3 million) before tax and interest in the quarter ended March 31. It is on track for a small net profit for the year. And it is not wheezing under the huge debts its rivals took on to build networks and buy mobile licenses. All that could change if Branson buys the Finnish mobile unit of Telia, the state-owned Swedish telecom. The company is for sale because Telia wants to merge with Sonera, Finland's market leader, and needs to dump its own holding. But interest has been limp; only Finland's No. 2, Elisa, has put in a bid so far. Analysts say the Finnish operator, with 250,000 customers and a 3G license, is worth between $50 million and $150 million. Branson says Virgin is interested.

When the Union Jack is lowered in July, the British Empire will be, at last, de facto and de jure, dead . Am I the only one who secretly hopes Tony Blair will, in the 11th hour, decide to strap on a pair and make a bloody row over the island colony? Music industry muckamuck, globetrotting adventurer, peddler of everything from Virgin computers to Virgin soda pop sky king of Virgin Atlantic Airways, and, inevitably, waterskiing guest star on Baywatch, Branson reinvents the empire as a vast kingdom of fun. For the 52-year-old CEO of Virgin, Richard Branson, the most successful businesses are those whose mission is to change things for the better.
Among the companies Branson oversees is Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Trains, The Virgin Entertainment Group and a mixed bag of start-ups, including health clubs, a financial services company, a bridal company and the new and already-successful Virgin Mobile Telephone Company.
Branson's adventurous personality in entrepreneurship extends to his personal life, where he takes on rarely attempted feats, like crossing from Morocco to Hawaii in a hot air balloon.
Branson always makes a statement in whatever he does, including pulling a full monty to introduce the new Virgin Mobile Telephone Company and accepting an aviation industry award from the bay in Tampa, Florida. Virgin Billionaire
Polo.com's one-on-one with Sir Richard Branson
By Stanley H. Murray Sir Richard Branson, one of the world's most highly visible entrepreneurs, started his first business venture, a national magazine called Student , when he was 16. The next year he established a Student Advisory Center to help young people. Three years later, he founded Virgin as a mail-order retailer and shortly thereafter opened a record shop on London's Oxford Street. During 1972, he built a recording studio in Oxfordshire, England, where the first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded "Tubular Bells," which was released in 1973 and went on to sell over five million copies. Branson's next venture was the creation of Virgin Atlantic Airways, founded on the concept of a uniquely competitive and distinctively original high-quality upper class and economy service, which is now the second largest British carrier. In 1997, Virgin took over Britain's two most run-down rail franchises, CrossCountry and West Coast Main Line. They are currently engaged in a two-billion pound sterling fleet replacement program to create one of the most modern, streamlined, high-tech rail networks in the world.

Sleep the secret for party-hard Branson
November 11 2002 Picture: SIMON O'DWYER Sir Richard Branson expects Virgin Blue, the business of which he is most proud, to net $100 million this year. Sir Richard Branson lives by simple rules: find good people and let them get on with it, and get a good night's sleep. Stephen Dabkowski reports. It might surprise those used to seeing Richard Branson in party mode that what he values most is a good sleep: it's his measure of success and failure. "The only time I've ever had a sleepless night is if I felt I'd failed at something, the feeling that if I'd just tried that little bit harder I might have avoided it (failure)," Sir Richard says. "As long as I've done every single thing I can to attempt to succeed that's all that matters." 'The Virgin boss is such a public figure, at least at media stunts, it adds to the intrigue of whether there are two Bransons: : the public and the private. "Hopefully, what you see is what you get," he says. "In my private life I have a lot of great family and friends and . . . a great life. It's challenging and exciting and sometimes things don't go exactly the way I'd like to go, but I've got really good people around me and we can share the successes and failures together."
