It was the summer of '91 and I was headed towards the center of Stanford University to get some much needed cash from their on-campus ATM. Along the way a vendor had set up a stand offering any number of cheesy Roger Dean posters and rock postcards. Passing one of the tables covered in cards I came across this one with a girl reclining in a chair, looking fatigued and maybe just a bit sad. I picked it up and hung it in my office and stared at it everyday for about a month and finally decided to find out as much as I could about this woman...

Former Wichita Film Star Dances Up Comeback Trail
Louise Brooks Deserts New York Night Clubs for
Chorus Girl Job with Grace Moore Louise Brooks, Wichita girl who danced her way to leading roles in the days of the silent movies and later deserted the screen for the New York night clubs, is now dancing along the comeback trail as a chorus girl in "Interlude," a musical staring Grace Moore. For the past two or three years Miss Brooks has been a favorite entertainer in swanky New York night clubs but deserted the bright lights a few months ago to try for a comeback in Hollywood. Miss Brooks' stage career started when she was in her early teens. From the Horace Mann intermediate school, Miss Brooks went to New York where she studied dancing in the Denishawn school. She later went on a tour as the youngest girl in the Denishawn troupe.

06:21 PM Apr. 10, 1998 PT Silent film star Louise Brooks was many things a woman wasn't supposed to be in the 1920s: independent, frankly erotic, and a reader of such substantive fare as the works of Proust, Ibsen, and Goethe. Expelled from New York's Algonquin Hotel for "promiscuity" when she was 18, Brooks went on to star in such films as Pandora's Box and A Girl in Every Port , inspiring film curator Henri Langlois to gush famously in 1955, "There is no Garbo. There is no Dietrich. There is only Louise Brooks!"

Though Brooks' long fall from ingenuehood included a stint as a salesgirl before her death in 1985, there is a full-on revival in progress. M. Doughty of the trip-hop group Soul Coughing sports a Brooks tattoo and penned a song called "Saint Louise" for the band's next album, a feature in InStyle magazine called the actress' trademark bob one of the "10 Haircuts that Shook the World," and both novelist Paul Auster and ultra-hip guitarist Bill Frisell are fans who created work inspired by the jazz-age icon.

    Brooks, Louise
Louise Brooks, 1928 By courtesy of the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House Film Stills Collection (1906-1985), actor Born on November 14, 1906, in Cherryvale, Kansas, Louise Brooks began dancing while a teenager and appeared in Florenz Ziegfeld's Follies on Broadway in 1925. She made her film debut that same year, soon rising to leading roles in such Hollywood films as Howard Hawks's A Girl in Every Port (1928) and William Wellman's Beggars of Life (1928). Her seemingly effortless incarnation of sensuality attracted the attention of the German director G.W. Pabst, who cast her as the amoral, self-destructive temptress Lulu in Pandora's Box ). Brooks's haunting performance in this film and as the 16-year-old girl who is seduced and prostituted in Pabst's Tagebuch einer Verlorenen The Diary of a Lost Girl ) marked the summit of her career. Her innocent eroticism, along with her pale, beautiful features and bobbed brunette hair made her both a film icon and a symbol of the disdainful flapper of the 1920s. Brooks returned to the United States in 1930, but her intellectual independence and outspokenness repeatedly brought her into conflict with studio executives there. After appearing in small roles in several Hollywood films during the 1930s, she permanently abandoned the cinema in 1938. Her literate and intelligent collection of autobiographical essays
