Der Meister der Parodisten Geboren wurde Mel Brooks am 28. Juni 1926 im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn unter dem Namen Melvyn Kaminsky als Kind russisch-polnischer Eltern. Noch im selben Jahr verstirbt der Vater und die Mutter ist nun allein erziehend mit vier Kindern und arbeitet in einer Textilfabrik und ( um über die Runden zu kommen ) als Heimwerkerin. Sohn Melvyn besucht nach der Grundschule die Eastern District High School. Sein Komikertalent zeigt sich bereits sehr früh. Mit 14 steht er in den Sommerferien in einem Hotel zum ersten Mal auf der Bühne und spielt einen betagten Distrikt-Anwalt, mit 16 Jahren verdient er sich sein Taschengeld als Trommler in einem Hotelorchester. Dabei entstand auch sein Künstlername. Da er nicht mit dem damals bekannten Trompeter Max Kaminsky verwechselt werden wollte nahm er den Mädchennamen seiner Mutter, Brookman, an. Melvyn Brookman, kurz: Mel Brooks. "Das Leben stinkt" (1991) ist noch einmal eine sehr vergnüglich-intelligente Brooks-Variante, allerdings schon mit einer Sozial-Romantik, die manchmal schon ans Peinliche grenzt: Ein Multimilliardär, der die Slums von LA abreißen lassen will, wird durch eine Wette selbst zum obdachlosen Streuner. Doch bedenkt man die hohe Gagdichte und einen Mel Brooks, dem dieser Film sichtlich Spaß gemacht hat, so kann man die übertriebenen, kitschigen Szenen durchaus verzeihen. Nach diesem Film ging Mel Brooks mehr oder weniger in den Ruhestand. So war nur noch hin und wieder als Ressigeur und Schauspieler zu sehen. Seine letzten Comedy Filme waren "Robin Hood: Helden in Strumpfhosen" ( 1993 ), einer Verarsche des Kevin Costner Streifens "König der Diebe", und "Dracula: Tot aber glücklich" ( 1995 ). Bei letzterem wirkt Mel Brooks; hier als Schauspieler neben Leslie Nielsen, gagmäßig jedoch etwas ermattet.

Max is devestated this latest in a string of failures, but he refuses to quit. Angrily, he reminds those who will listen that he was once "The King of Broadway" and will be again! A few days later, Max hires an accountant, Leo Bloom, to balance his books. When the nerdy accountant casually mentions that a producer could actually make more money with a flop than with a hit, Max is all ears. Leo goes on to explain, "You could raise a million dollars, put on a hundred-thousand dollar failure, and keep the rest for yourself." Recognizing the genius of Leo's innocent statement, Max immediately urges the accountant to join him in this profitablealthough highly illegalscheme. Eventually, Leo agrees, and the two men go into business as "Bialystock & Bloom, Theatrical Producers." Soon it is opening night. Max and Leo can hardly contain their excitementthey are prepared to close the show and sneak off with the money. But fate has a surprise in store for them. Amazingly, "Springtime for Hitler" is an unparalleled success! The critics love it, calling it "a satirical masterpiece," "a surprise smash it," and "the best musical of the decade." Stunned and bewildered, Max and Leo stumble back to their office to regroup. Max is soon arrested, and Leo runs off to Rio with the two million dollars and his beautiful blonde assistant Ulla. (USA - 1974) di Mel Brooks Divertentissima parodia del filone horror più rivisitato in assoluto, il film si avvale di un eccellente cast, di una solida e ben costruita sceneggiatura (gli autori sono Wilder e Brooks), di una regia impeccabile e di un'atmosfera in bianco e nero volutamente allusiva e parodistica. Protagonista (Gene Wilder) è un medico e scienziato accreditato, che insegna in una prestigiosa accademia a studenti goliardici ma volenterosi. Mel Brooks si fa gioco dei luoghi comuni del brivido con arguzia, intelligenza, humour e delicatezza. Nel finale, il film scade un po' nell'americanata, ma nel complesso trattasi di opera godibile, azzeccata, divertente nei suoi pasticci linguistici e nelle sue dotte allusioni letterarie.
